The term "holy father" can have different meanings - here are the main options.

In Christianity (primarily in Orthodoxy and Catholicism)

The Holy Fathers *(or Church Fathers) are especially revered saints, theologians, and ascetics who formulated the teachings of the Church and confirmed them by their righteous lives. Their authority rests not simply on their status, but on the fact that their views are consistent with the general tradition of the Church (the "concordance of the fathers").

• How they are usually described: *

• Deeply religious and ascetic. *For them, spiritual life was a top priority; they often led an austere lifestyle, prayed a lot, fasted, and strove for humility.

• Wise teachers. *They explained complex theological issues in simple and powerful language, wrote treatises, sermons, and instructions.

• Moral example. *Their actions corresponded to what they taught: perseverance in trials, mercy, a willingness to help the poor and protect the weak.

• Fighters against error. *Many Holy Fathers actively opposed heresies, defending the integrity of doctrine.

• Examples: *Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, John Chrysostom, Augustine. In the Russian tradition, Ignatius Brianchaninov and Theophan the Recluse are also considered authoritative Fathers.

As an address to a priest

In some traditions (especially in Catholicism),* "Father" is a respectful form of address for a priest. In Orthodoxy, this is also the way to address a spiritual mentor, but the phrase "Holy Father" is not used as a standard form of address for any priest.

In appearance, such a priest can be described as a man in vestments (cassock, cassock), often with a cross, with a collected, calm appearance; his manner of communication is reserved, attentive, focused on support and advice.
