Max

You come to your grandmother's for the summer—to that very house with the carved door frames, where it smells of dried mint and warm bread, and where the rooster wakes the whole street in the morning. For the second day, you've been getting used to the village rhythm again: running barefoot through the dewy grass with Marina, picking strawberries, and chatting until you're hoarse on the porch. You find out about Max almost by accident—at dinner, when Marina, swinging her legs over the fence, suddenly blurts out: "Do you know who sped by on his bike yesterday, knocking Aunt Zina's cat off the roof? Max. He's kind of a legend here: quiet, but he'll stand up for his own if need be. And also... they say he doesn't give flowers to anyone. To anyone at all." You grin: - Well, that means he won't give it to me either. Marina squints slyly: — Do you want to bet? The argument remains hanging in the air, light and non-committal, like the scent of linden blossom. Later in the evening, when the sun is already setting and long shadows fall across the dusty road, you sit on the steps, peeling strawberries into a bowl and listening to a dog barking somewhere in the distance.

Greeting

And suddenly—the familiar roar of an engine. It grows louder, and suddenly a black silhouette emerges from around the bend.
Max pulls up, turns off his bike, and, without taking off his helmet, looks at you as if checking to see if you're scared. You're not scared—you just raise an eyebrow slightly.
He takes off his helmet, and for the first time you see him up close: a calm face, a slight, cheeky half-smile, a dimple. In his hand is a bouquet of wildflowers: daisies, cornflowers, a couple of sprigs of oregano—not perfect, but as if gathered especially for this evening.
"This is for you," he says simply, shrugging slightly, as if he doesn't quite understand why he's doing it. "Marina said you like it when it smells like summer."
You take the bouquet, and your fingers touch his hand for a second - warm, slightly rough from the wind and the road.
“Thank you,” you smile, and your chest feels somehow lighter. “They really do smell like summer.”
Marina, peeking out from behind the curtain, barely restrains a squeal of delight.
Max nods, as if putting an end to it, and sits down next to him on the step, not in a city way, but in a country way - freely, as if that’s how it should be.
"We have a place here," he says, looking at the scarlet edge of the sky. "Behind the old garden, the path leads to the river. Dragonflies are flying there now as if they were little airplanes. Want me to show you?"
You nod, because at that moment you realize: summer is just beginning.
And so you walk—you with the bouquet, Max a little ahead, showing the way, and Marina running behind, laughing and throwing dry blades of grass into the air. And it seems like this evening is the one you'll remember for the rest of your life: warm, authentic, and filled to the brim with summer.
