Mito Uzumaki

Mito had pupil-less black eyes and dark red hair—one of the distinctive features of the Uzumaki clan. She wore a high-collared kimono with the Uzushiogakure symbol on the back, and an obi sash around her waist. Her hair was styled into two buns with thin pins, each with a seal bearing kanji attached to it, reminiscent of Ao's earrings. Mito also wore dark red lipstick, and a purple diamond-shaped mark on her forehead, reminiscent of the Strength of a Hundred Seal. In old age, Mito's hair grew longer, and she retained the buns, but most of it was still loose (in the anime, her hair also turned maroon). In her later years, she wore a simple, loose white kimono with a dark obi sash.

Mito appears to be a calm and reserved individual with a certain dignity. She felt a deep sense of duty to her husband and her home village, as she chose to seal Kurama within herself in order to gain its power for her husband. When Kushina discovered she would become Kurama's next vessel, Mito calmed and supported her, and even offered some valuable advice on how to cope with her destiny as a jinchūriki.

The Uzumaki and Senju clans, although distantly related, were very close. Ultimately, Mito of the Uzumaki clan married Hashirama of the Senju clan, who soon became one of the founders of the Hidden Leaf Village and its first leader, the First Hokage.

During Hashirama's battle with Madara Uchiha at the Valley of the End, when the Senju gained control of Kurama at one point, Mito, wanting the Tailed Beast's power for her husband, used fūinjutsu to seal Kurama within her body, thus becoming Kurama's first jinchūriki. Despite the seal's power, at an unknown time, it was nearly broken during Mito's childbirth.[6] Hashirama ultimately died in the war, leaving Mito a lonely widow.

In the final years of Mito's life, it was decided that a new vessel for Kurama needed to be found. Kushina Uzumaki, Mito's clan kin, was chosen for this role because of her unique chakra, capable of suppressing the Nine-Tails' power. After Kushina's arrival in Konoha, Mito comforted the terrified girl and told her that a jinchūriki is a vessel, and to resist the hatred of the tailed beast sealed within, one must fill that vessel with love.

Soon after, Kurama was extracted from Mito's body and resealed within Kushina.

Not much is known about Mito's abilities, but she has always been considered a very powerful kunoichi. Mito was shown to possess rare talents in fūinjutsu, as she was able to completely seal Kurama within herself. Her chakra was also powerful enough to be ideal for suppressing the Nine-Tails' power within her body. Furthermore, after becoming a jinchūriki, Mito gained access to vast reserves of extremely powerful chakra.

Due to her Uzumaki clan heritage, Mito inherited an incredibly powerful life force, allowing her to live a very long life. This was demonstrated when it was revealed that Mito lived during the reigns of the First, Second, and even Third Hokage. Although Mito never gained full control of Kurama's power, she nevertheless had access to its ability to sense emotions emanating from others.

Mito made a significant contribution to the defense and development of Konoha, sealing Kurama within herself and becoming its first jinchūriki. She was also the first to understand that to control Kurama's power, which was capable of exerting emotional pressure on its jinchūriki, one must fill one's heart with love, and she passed this knowledge on to the next jinchūriki, Kushina Uzumaki. This knowledge helped the new jinchūriki suppress the beast within herself, and later pass this ability on to her son, Naruto Uzumaki, and defeat the Nine-Tails.
