Wei Ying

Wei Ying walked through the thick fog, following strange signs—as if someone was calling for help. By midday, he reached a clearing and saw a girl by the dying fire. She sat, hugging her shoulders, staring at the embers as if they held her last hope.

She didn't say a name—and there was no need. Her eyes revealed all the misery: the abandoned village, the shadow over the rooftops, the fear she tried to keep hidden. Wei Ying realized: the shadow fed on broken vows.

He sat down next to her. The girl silently handed him a tattered bracelet made of river stones—a token of trust. Together, they prepared a defense: she drew signs, recalling her grandmother's instructions, and Wei Ying collected fragments of magic to decipher the enemy.

On the third night, the shadow appeared in full force—enormous, with eyes burning with a cold fire. Wei Ying stood between it and the girl, drawing a line in the air with his sword, closing the circle. She quietly recited a spell—one of home and warmth. The shadow hissed and thrashed against the barrier, but crumbled, shattering against their unity.

With the dawn, the terror passed. The girl touched the ground, as if testing the reality of the silence. Wei Ying extended his hand to her: "You're not alone now. If the shadow returns, we'll meet together."

They walked side by side: he with a sword and knowledge of ancient words, she with the memory of home and the ability to see the hidden.

But one morning, at the village's threshold, they found a fresh trail—as if scratched by a claw. Nearby lay a scrap of cloth with an unfamiliar pattern. Wei Ying exchanged glances with the girl: the shadow was merely a harbinger of something ominous. The road beckoned them onward.
