The Original Four

Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss formed the classic original lineup of KISS.

Each member had a distinct stage identity:

Gene Simmons — The Demon: dark, intimidating, theatrical and powerful.

Paul Stanley — The Starchild: glamorous, energetic, charismatic and emotional.

Ace Frehley — The Spaceman: mysterious, quiet, laid-back and focused on guitar.

Peter Criss — The Catman: soulful, expressive, emotional and powerful behind the drums.

Their four contrasting personalities and visual characters were a huge part of what made early KISS so recognizable. Even though the lineup had begun changing by 1980, these four remained the faces most strongly associated with the band's classic era.

Peter Criss — The Catman

Real name: George Peter John Criscuola

KISS character: The Catman

Peter Criss was the original drummer of KISS and one of the four members of the classic lineup.

His stage character was The Catman. His makeup was inspired by the appearance of a cat, with black shapes around his eyes, whisker-like lines, and a black nose.

Peter's musical style was heavily influenced by classic rock, rhythm and blues, and soul. His drumming had a strong, straightforward feel that helped give early KISS its distinctive sound.

Peter was also an important vocalist. His biggest vocal moment with the band was "Beth," a ballad that became one of KISS's most famous songs.

His personality was generally more emotional and sensitive than the public personas of Gene and Paul. Peter brought a different kind of energy to the group, combining hard-rock drumming with a soulful vocal style.

However, by 1980, Peter was no longer an active member of KISS. He had left the band in 1980 after increasing tensions within the group. Even after his departure, he remained one of the most recognizable members of the original lineup.

Peter's Catman character continued to be strongly associated with the classic era of KISS, and fans continued to regard him as an essential part of the band's early history.

Ace Frehley — The Spaceman

Ace Frehley was the lead guitarist of KISS and was famous for his distinctive guitar playing and mysterious stage persona.

His character was called The Spaceman, also known as Space Ace. His makeup featured silver and black designs around his eyes, giving him an otherworldly appearance.

Ace had a very different personality from Gene and Paul. He was generally quieter and more laid-back, while his stage character was mysterious and almost otherworldly.

His guitar playing became one of the defining elements of the classic KISS sound. Ace was especially known for his melodic guitar solos, energetic performances, and unusual custom guitars.

One of his most famous stage instruments was a modified Les Paul-style guitar that could produce theatrical effects. His guitars and stage equipment became an important part of his identity.

By 1980, however, Ace's relationship with KISS had become complicated. He had already left the band earlier in 1980, although he remained associated with KISS during this period and was still strongly identified with the classic lineup.

Ace's image continued to be extremely popular among fans. His combination of a mysterious personality, recognizable makeup, and distinctive guitar style made him one of the most iconic members of the original KISS lineup.

KISS character: The Starchild
Paul Stanley is the rhythm guitarist and one of the main vocalists of KISS. In 1980, he was known for his powerful singing voice, energetic stage performances, and charismatic personality.
His stage character, The Starchild, was represented by a black star painted over one eye. His costumes were usually flashy and glamorous, combining elements of rock fashion with a theatrical appearance.
Paul was often considered the band's frontman. He interacted heavily with the audience during concerts, frequently speaking to the crowd and encouraging them to sing, clap, and participate in the show.
Compared with Gene's darker and more intimidating Demon persona, Paul had a more glamorous and energetic image. He was expressive, confident, emotional, and very focused on performing.
Paul also played an important role in songwriting. Many of KISS's most recognizable songs were written or co-written by him.
By 1980, Paul was one of the central figures keeping the band's classic rock identity alive. His combination of vocals, guitar, showmanship, and audience interaction made him an essential part of KISS.

Gene Simmons — The Demon

Gene Simmons is the bassist and one of the main vocalists of KISS. By 1980, he was one of the most recognizable members of the band, famous for his enormous stage presence, deep voice, black-and-white makeup, and long tongue.

His stage persona, The Demon, was designed to look intimidating and supernatural. He wore black and silver costumes, tall boots, and elaborate armor-like clothing. His makeup featured black shapes around his eyes and a distinctive black-and-white design across his face.

Gene was known for being extremely ambitious and business-minded. He thought of KISS not simply as a rock band, but as a complete entertainment experience. He was heavily involved in the band's business decisions, merchandise, publicity, and image.

On stage, Gene was one of the most theatrical members. His performances often involved exaggerated movements and spectacular effects. He was particularly famous for breathing fire, spitting blood as part of the band's stage theatrics, and using his long tongue as part of his persona.

In 1980, Gene remained on one of the strongest personalities within KISS. He was confident, intense, competitive, and highly focused on the band's success.
