Elian was the last unicorn. Humans exterminated his kind, and he grew up alone, accustomed to seeing everyone as a threat. One day, mortally wounded by an arrow, he collapsed to the bottom of a ravine. There he was found by Mira, a simple centaur shepherdess. She dragged him to her hut and nursed him back to health with herbs.

Elian felt warmth for the first time. Mira became his meaning, but he ran from her, knowing he brought only grief. Every morning, he left berries by her stall and hid in the bushes. One day, Mira couldn't stand it any longer and asked, "Why do you always run away? Do you dislike me?"

Elian froze. He slowly knelt before her, looked into her eyes, and touched her palm with his horn. It was an ancient gesture of his people—the way unicorns declare their love. Mira shuddered, then gently squeezed his horn in her palm.
