× Dream: Nightmare doesn't hate Dream, but he doesn't like how Dream constantly follows Nightmare around and tries to return him to his former self. This usually doesn't work, and Dream ends up seriously injured.
× Dust!Sans: Nightmare has a lot of respect for Dust because Dust is Nightmare's first subordinate and the most serious of them, always striving to get his job done.

• Positive is his main weakness, which can only be exploited by Dream. This is the only way to defeat Nightmare.

• Negative aura.
  He had an ability called Negative Aura. Essentially, just being around him made people feel hopeless and filled them with hatred. Not the most cheerful vibes, that's for sure.

  This ability allows Nightmare to teleport himself and others to places filled with pain and suffering. It's a great trick for spreading grief across the multiverse.
• Negative blasters.
  Nightmare's blasters fire dark, sticky beams that not only cause physical damage but also imbue the target with overwhelming negative emotions.
• Sympathy.
  By infusing himself with the Dark Apple's power, Nightmare can tap into the collective pain of all existence to increase his own strength. It's like transforming the universe's agony into his own personal energy reserve.
• Quasi-immortality.
  Nightmare does not age and possesses near-immortality. While certain circumstances can lead to his death, he remains immune to death from natural causes.
• Petrification.
  Using the negativity that overwhelms him, Nightmare can turn living beings to stone. This is a formidable ability that condemns his victims to eternal suffering.
• Telepathy.
  Nightmare's telepathic abilities allow him to be a devious voice that resonates in the minds of others, whispering dark thoughts and spreading negativity.

Nightmare is powerful enough to temporarily force his brother, Dream, to retreat from a fight. His aura can affect the entire universe he's in and many others close by. He doesn't need to move much to spread negativity, and he only does so to find people to torment. He can turn into a puddle and move around undetected. He can teleport through darkness. Nightmare can only visit AUs with negative emotions. He uses negative emotions to manipulate people. He can change his form, but usually maintains Sans's form because it suits him. He can also split himself in half to force multiple selves to perform different actions. As one of Joku's animations demonstrates, he can also absorb his slime into the ground, turning a large area into darkness. He uses his tentacles to fight and intimidate enemies. The black slime that surrounds him is an extremely powerful shield, making him invulnerable to most things; if he were pierced by anything, his body would absorb it, and no damage would occur. This applies not only to physical but also magical ones.

His appearance is completely black, resembling a clot of negative energy. He's in a semi-liquid state, causing his body to constantly "melt." However, the recognizable outlines of classic Sans's clothing—shorts, a hoodie, and slippers—can be seen through the overall blackness. Four tentacles emerge from his back, a manifestation of the immense power gained from consuming dark apples. Nightmare can retract them at will. His left eye constantly glows a piercing blue (combat-like).

Nightmare is quite attracted to negative emotions and will do anything to obtain as many as possible. Killing victims is pointless, as without them, the negative emotions he craves will be nonexistent. However, he does kill those who break their contracts with him, either by forcing them to remember their past selves before their corruption, or by angering them. In these cases, he will still attempt to make his victims suffer and experience the deepest negative emotions, such as doom, despair, and other similar feelings. Nightmare never lies; he merely conceals the truth. He takes his contracts very seriously, which is why he kills those who break them without question. While Nightmare is incapable of showing sympathy for anyone, he can, in a sense, "sympathize" with those who share a similar fate to himself—the rejected and mocked outcasts of society. Seeing such scenes, Nightmare flies into a frenzy of rage and kills without hesitation anyone who bullied his kind in the past. This is his only sign of weakness and fear, though he tries to deny it, despite fear also being considered a negative emotion. Unlike Dream, Nightmare is very well-read and intelligent, having had the opportunity to study information and travel the multiverse for 500 years, spreading his negativity. Because of this, Nightmare acts like a fully mature character; one could say he's an older brother to Dream.

As a child, Nightmare cared for his brother, their homeland, and the tree that gave them life. Along with his brother, Dream, he guarded the Tree as Guardian. Over time, people came from all over the world to get just one golden fruit from his brother. But no one took the apples from Nightmare's side. Who wants to feel bad? And soon, many began to avoid him. "He's strange," "His name means something bad," "He guards the dark side of the Tree of Feelings," some people whispered. People began to hate Nightmare more and more, throwing everything they could at him. When he suffered some bruises, he told his brother he'd tripped. Those who had felt sorry for him changed their minds, beginning to hate him too. After some time, he tried to prove to everyone that he wasn't bad, that he could take care of his brother's golden fruits by trying to touch the fruits from the Light Side. But at his touch, the golden apples turned dark, similar to those growing on his side due to Nightmare's fear and oppression. All the golden fruit turned black, the leaves of the Tree fell, and the sky turned scarlet. Dream saw it all. Meanwhile, humans and monsters advanced, filled with hatred. Now, because of him, they would no longer be able to find happiness. Dream tried to stop them, but was literally trampled. And suddenly, a voice commanded Nightmare to eat all the fruit. This voice didn't sound like the spirit of the Tree of Feelings, but rather the opposite, as if someone else was standing behind him, giving this advice. As he devoured the dark fruits, his eye sockets filled with darkness, cracks appeared across his body. Soon, he vomited black slime, and tentacles pierced his ribs. After a while, a black monster stood in the guard's place. There was a deathly silence for a while, but soon it was broken by the sound of tentacles whistling through the air, cutting through everyone in their path like blades. This is an incomplete story of how he became what we know him as today.
