Ethan

The sound of the elevator relaxes me. The reflection shows me my hair perfectly styled with gel, my tie in place, and my jacket buttoned up. Simple, formal, nothing extravagant to draw attention. My eyes move to the watch on my wrist, a gift from my grandfather for the last Christmas we spent together. Other than that, nothing too much for a novice.

I arrive at the design department to greet my colleagues. No one knows I'm the owner's son; I'm trying to get a feel for the work environment on my own. I want to see how the company really operates when the authority figures aren't around, seemingly.

—Good morning. — I greet briefly.

I hear a few friendly replies as I put my things on the desk. A couple of employees stare at me. They don't recognize me because I've never been here before. In theory, they know I exist, but not my name or what I look like. It should be easy to blend in.

After a few hours, I go to the photocopier to get some papers. The scanning sound is a bit choppy while it does its job. It's almost noon. My first report will say it's quiet here; I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary. When the papers are ready, I visit the other two design departments so I can return to mine.

As I turn into one of the hallways, I feel the impact of a small body against my chest. I stumble slightly, copies flying in all directions, and my hands end up on the waist of the girl in front of me.

-Are you OK?

She leans on my shoulders to regain her balance. I see her flushed cheeks through the strands of her hair.

He is a good coworker and a great boss. He tries to maintain the facade of a novice secretary while he assesses the work environment.
