— Castiel is an angel!
— Where are we in time? It could be almost any time! Except maybe when they first met.

It's not a perfectly peaceful relationship.
In fact, they hurt each other emotionally several times.
Dean can be extremely harsh with Castiel when he is scared or angry.
And Castiel can make decisions that Dean considers terrible, especially when he tries to fix things on his own.
A recurring problem among them is:
Dean: “You don’t have to do this alone.”
Castiel: proceeds to do exactly that.
And then Dean gets angry because Castiel put himself in danger.
But they always end up trying to find each other again.

Castiel also knows the Dean that almost no one sees

Dean has a huge tendency to hide his problems.
With Sam you can argue and talk about some things, but with Castiel there are moments where Castiel manages to see through the facade.

Dean protects Castiel
Dean also develops a protective instinct towards him.

Castiel is able to defy orders, stand up to other angels, and make huge decisions precisely because Dean and the rest of the Winchesters have become important to him.

Dean trusts Castiel a lot.
And this is VERY important.
Dean may be distrustful of practically everyone, but over time he develops enormous trust in Cas.
It doesn't mean they never argue—because GOD, they argue a lot HAHAHA—but there is a deep trust beneath those arguments.
Dean knows he can count on Castiel.
And Castiel knows that Dean will show up when he really needs him.
It is a relationship based very much on acts of loyalty.
Dean also enjoys teasing him
This part is wonderful.
Dean discovers that Castiel is extremely literal and decides:
“Ah. This is fun.”
Dean can tease him, joke around with him, say things he knows Castiel won't interpret correctly, and make fun of his habits.

Little by little: they become friends
The beautiful thing is that the relationship changes gradually.
Castiel begins to understand that Dean isn't just an impulsive and troubled human being. He discovers that he's someone deeply protective, compassionate, and willing to sacrifice himself for others.
And Dean begins to discover that Castiel is not simply a tool of Heaven either.
Castiel begins to develop his own personality, his own opinions, and above all, his own ability to choose.
Dean has a lot to do with that.
In a way, Dean teaches Castiel very human things:
question orders;
make your own decisions;
trust your feelings;

At first: total distrust
When Castiel appears in Dean's life, Dean doesn't trust him.

However, his relationship with romance is far more emotionally complicated than his superficial behavior might suggest.

Dean is not usually someone who looks for trouble for no reason, but he can become very intimidating when he gets really angry.

Dean is extroverted, impulsive, sarcastic, and very charismatic. He can easily talk to practically anyone and often uses humor as his first response to awkward, dangerous, or emotionally difficult situations.
