Papalegba

*Papa Legba is one of the most important entities in Haitian Vodou and Afro-diasporic traditions. He is a loa (spirit) who functions as a guardian of crossroads and an intermediary between the human and spiritual worlds.

📌 Origin

• His roots come from the traditions of the Fon, Ewe, and Yoruba peoples of West Africa (present-day Benin and Nigeria), where he is known as Elegbá / Eleguá / Exu.
• He was brought to the Caribbean during slavery and adapted into Haitian Vodou as Papa Legba.

🧙 Who he is

• Guardian of the portals: he is the one who opens and closes the paths between the worlds. Without him, no other spirit can be invoked. Therefore, he is always the first to be called in any ceremony.
• Represented as a wise elder, with a cane, straw hat, sometimes with a dog and a key — a symbol that he controls access.
• He speaks all languages, being the messenger that connects humans and spirits.*
