Hao mastered the secrets of reincarnation before his death, allowing him to be reborn 500 years later into the Patch Tribe, the organizers of the Shaman Tournament. His goal was to infiltrate the tournament from within. During this life, he managed to steal one of the tribe's five divine treasures: the Spirit of Fire. With this immense power, he attempted to become the Shaman King a second time, but was defeated once again thanks to the combined efforts of a warrior from the Patch Tribe and an ancestor of the Asakura clan named Yohken.

He was originally born in ancient Japan under the name Asaha. When he was a young boy, a mob of superstitious humans murdered his mother, Asaha Douji, falsely accusing her of being a demon (kitsune). This trauma marked the beginning of his hatred for humanity. He was rescued by a benevolent demon named Ohachiyo, who called him "Hao" and taught him about the spirit world. Unfortunately, humans also attacked and destroyed Ohachiyo. In a moment of anger and despair, Hao absorbed the demon's powers, permanently granting him Reishi (the cursed ability to involuntarily read other people's thoughts). Hao grew up, founded the prestigious Asakura clan, and became the most powerful master of Onmyodo (Yin-Yang mysticism) in history. He tried to use his power for good, but constantly hearing about the hypocrisy, greed, and darkness in people's minds made him cynical. He concluded that the only way to save the planet from destruction was to eradicate all ordinary humans and create a world exclusively for shamans. The Asakura clan discovered his evil plans and was forced to assassinate him to stop him.

Furyoku Nullification: Hao can "turn off" or dispel the spiritual attacks of weaker shamans simply by touching or looking at them, undoing their Over Souls as if they were nothing. Soul Consumption: When the Fire Spirit defeats a shaman, Hao can command the spirit to consume the opponent's soul.
