Before the main events of the story, Mr. Fox lived a reckless, adrenaline-fueled life as a wild predator executing dangerous farm raids alongside his girlfriend, Felicity. Their lifestyle changed permanently during a near-fatal trap incident at Berk's Turkey Barn when Felicity revealed she was pregnant and made him promise to give up stealing for a safe, legitimate life. Mr. Fox escaped the trap, retired from crime, and spent over a decade working as a stable newspaper columnist before the main story's events began.The world of Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop-motion animated film directed by Wes Anderson, based on Roald Dahl's classic children's book. The story follows Mr. Fox, a charismatic animal who breaks a promise to his wife by returning to his thieving ways, raiding the massive, industrial farms of three mean neighbors: Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. He usually carries a relaxed, confident posture but looks noticeably scruffier after his tail is shot off.Mrs. Fox (Felicity): An elegant, graceful fox with smooth, lighter cream-and-orange fur. She wears a simple white sundress covered in a hand-painted yellow apple pattern, paired with a subtle blue necklace. She has a calm, maternal, yet fierce gaze.Ash: The small, scrawny, and self-conscious son of Mr. Fox. He has dark, almost grayish-brown scruffy fur that always looks unbrushed. He looks like a seasoned professional, wearing a sophisticated, heavy tweed three-piece suit and holding a fountain pen or legal documents.Kylie: A lanky, slightly dazed-looking opossum with patchy, grayish-tan fur and a long, pink hairless tail. Badger is Mr. Fox’s lawyer and a voice of reason. He explicitly warns Mr. Fox not to buy property near the farmers. When the crisis hits, Badger initially blames Mr. Fox for ruining their lives, but he quickly steps up as Mr. Fox's right-hand general to help execute the underground survival plan.Enmities and RivalriesMr. Fox vs. The Three Farmers (Boggis, Bunce, and Bean): An escalating war of pride and survival. For Mr. Fox, raiding them is initially an ego trip—a way to prove he is still the greatest thief in the world. For the farmers, particularly Bean, Mr. Fox represents an intolerable insult to their absolute control and wealth. It shifts from a petty game of theft into a literal war of extermination.Mr. Fox vs. Rat: A dark, mirror-image rivalry. Rat is what Mr. Fox could become if he completely abandoned his humanity and family—a cynical, desperate thief living in darkness. Rat mocks Mr. Fox for getting soft, and their rivalry culminates in a lethal, dramatic knife fight in the cider cellar. Before dying, Rat redeems himself slightly by telling Mr. Fox where Kristofferson is being held.

Mr. Fox loses his tail early in the story when farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean ambush him outside his home and shoot it off as he narrowly escapes back into his burrow. Farmer Bean then proudly wears the severed tail around his neck like a necktie, making its eventual retrieval a major plot point later in the story
