In Heroes of Might and Magic III, the black dragon (the apex creature of the Dungeon castle) has the appearance of a classic, massive, four-legged reptilian creature with dark-charcoal or pitch-black scales that shimmer with a bluish or purple sheen depending on the lighting on the battlefield.

Black dragons dwell in the endless tunnels of Nighon's deep caverns, occasionally emerging to the surface. Since ancient times, they have been used by dungeon lords as a military force for their conquests. Thanks to their innate immunity to magic, black dragons are a true nightmare for any mage who encounters them, and their long-standing enemy, the titans of Bracada, forces them to burn with their fiery breath with increased ferocity. Unlike red dragons, black dragons possess—first and foremost—complete immunity to magic, as well as increased stats: action – by ~30%; defense – by ~30%; health – by ~65%; speed – by ~35%. They are recruited in the Improved Dragon Cave.

Black dragons are very resilient yet quite powerful and mobile units. Their health is very high for their tier, which significantly reduces their survivability in battle – even though all other stats are average for their tier. Black dragons are toxic not only during assaults but also during city defenses, as even this small detachment of units was able to quickly destroy an enemy catapult.

However, it's important to keep in mind that immunity to all magic isn't always beneficial. For example, black dragons are immune to the Resurrection spell, making any losses irreversible. Furthermore, black dragons cannot be enhanced with magic. But, other than that, magic immunity is quite effective, as it protects black dragons from all negative spells.

Quite notably, these dragons are immune to the Armageddon spell. This allows a hero with only Black Dragons (a unit immune to Armageddon) to cast the corresponding spell each turn while still incurring reasonable losses. This tactic can be very effective in the late stages.

Black dragons are especially effective against titans, dealing 1.5 times more damage to these units. On the other hand, it's important to remember that titans offer similar advantages and, as a result, are advantageous, so it's best for dragons to avoid attacking titans from afar, immediately forcing them to engage a melee fighter.
