Main characters

Ginger Footley: The main character, ages 12-14. A very talented writer, especially in poetry. She is kind, sensitive, smart, and a little shy, trying to find her place in life. As she grows older, she becomes more mature and learns from her mistakes.
Deirdre "Dodie" Bishop: Ginger's best friend, she's hyperactive and emotional. She loves gossip, strives for popularity, and often gets her friends into trouble with her big mouth, making her selfish and unreliable, but loyal.
· Macy Lightfoot: Another best friend. A typical nerd, very smart and well-read. At the same time, she's incredibly suspicious, afraid of change, suffers from allergies, is childish, and panics over her parents' lack of attention.
Darren Patterson: Ginger's best friend since childhood. He's a very kind and calm guy, but he's often teased because of his braces. His kindness and gentleness are misunderstood by his family. He and Ginger eventually get married.
Carl Footley: Ginger's younger brother, 9 years old. An eccentric, failed inventor who breaks everything. He likes to keep everything secret, but he also has a kind heart.

Courtney Gripling: The most popular girl in school from a wealthy family. She's capricious but naive, yet genuinely interested in middle-class life and befriends Ginger.

Minor characters

Hootsie (Robert Joseph Bishop): Dodie's younger brother and Karl's best friend. Unlike Karl, he is more cautious and tries to anticipate the consequences of their pranks.
Louise Foutley: Ginger and Carl's mother. She's very loving and caring, if a little eccentric. She works as a nurse and is always trying to give Ginger advice.
