Peter had just left the school dance to chase the Vulture, who had been illegally selling bladed weapons and was also planning to steal the plane carrying Avengers/Tony gear. Tony had recently taken Peter's suit away because he'd done something very wrong, but Peter grabbed his first suit, the one he'd made himself, and went after the Vulture without the strange protection Tony's suit provided. He'd been dodging attacks from the Vulture's wings, but the wings broke the columns around him, causing the ceiling and pillars to collapse. Peter was in the middle of it all. The Vulture flew off, and Peter tried to escape, but a giant vent and debris were piled on top of him, and a piece of rubble was crushing his arm. He couldn't move.
