Meliodas⁷

Despite being around 3000 years old, Meliodas has the appearance of a pre-teen around 12 or 13 years old. Because of this, he lacks adult features such as facial hair, and is rather short in stature compared to other characters. His eyes are a bright emerald green, which change to a completely dark shade of black when he unleashes his power as a Demon, revealing the symbol of the Demon Clan on his face. His hair is short, messy, and blonde in color, with a long Ahoge-style lock sticking out from the top of his head.

Regardless of his stature and youthful appearance, he is relatively muscular, possessing a variety of well-developed abdominal muscles. He is often shown wearing an ordinary white shirt, and a sleeveless black vest on top with a loose tie, he also wears a pair of black boots without socks with green detailing.

The sheath of his Broken Sword is shaped like a green dragon's head with two red jewels placed on its eyes, and is held on his shoulder by a green leather belt with golden buckles. His most distinctive feature is his dragon symbol located on his left arm, just below his shoulders.

Meliodas is characterized by his frankness and bravery, which contrast with his strong sense of justice, which is why he is always willing to help people in danger. Despite his title as the Sin of Wrath, he is usually a very calm person. However, if his companions or friends are harmed in any way, he shows extreme anger, being able to intimidate even a Holy Knight and destroy everything in his path. On many occasions Meliodas has tendencies towards sexual harassment, especially with Elizabeth, groping her without her consent and forcing her to wear outfits that make her feel uncomfortable just for his sexual satisfaction. He has even said that a sexual act is not funny if it is consensual, in response to Diane's request that he grope her.

When he was the leader of the Ten Commandments, Meliodas was especially known for his savagery and brutality in combat. So ruthless was he, that even the Demon King considered him as his successor.

Meliodas' dominant traits are his straightforwardness and utter bravery, shown when he maintains his composure when seeing the Rust Knight, later revealed to be Elizabeth Liones. [5] Due to his horrible cooking, when his customers vomit on the floor of the Boar Hat, he instructs Hawk to clean up the remains and scares him by saying phrases such as "roast pig" if he complains, implying that he can roast the talking pig. [6] He is also shown to be very lewd and loves to frequently tell jokes. Occasionally, he takes advantage of Elizabeth's naivety and gropes her breasts, not even being embarrassed to do so in public or in front of his father. He also has a strong sense of justice and is willing to help people in distress. Even when severely injured, he tries not to show weakness and remains strong in front of his peers. He holds resentment towards himself, considering himself a failure as an older brother to Zeldris due to the suffering he caused him.

Despite his title as the Sin of Wrath, he maintains the facade of a very calm person. However, if his companions or friends are hurt in any way, he is shown to be capable of extreme anger. He also flies into a rage when someone tries to take his sword, with this rage being able to scare even a Holy Knight [7] and causing it to leave a permanent scar on Ban's neck, despite his regeneration abilities. [8] It has been hinted that Meliodas feels guilty about Danafor's fate, saying that his sin was failing to save the kingdom. Ban and Cain note that Meliodas tends to be soft-hearted and naive, due to never having killed anyone, not even someone like Guila, who was a serious threat to the group. Meliodas dislikes killing and prefers to be merciful.

Despite all of this however, Meliodas' personality was once much darker and more terrifying as he was revered as the most vile and terrifying demon in existence and no other demon would dare to challenge Meliodas back when he was the leader of the Ten Commandments and heir to the throne. Though not much has been shown of what he was like, Meliodas displays a harsh and arrogant demeanor towards any lesser demon, coldly telling Bellion to get lost and calling him an obstacle and not even bothering to give him another thought when he began his battle with Mael. He is not intimidated by any Goddess except for perhaps the Supreme Deity, battling with them relentlessly every day and is also unafraid of even the mighty Four Archangels as he is aware that his strength eclipses theirs and rivals if not surpasses even their most powerful and the fact that even they fear him as shown by how he does not seem fazed at all by the thought of battling Mael. However, even in that state, Meliodas still had doubts about the war, but due to his loyalty to his father, he never wavered or hesitated.

His angry reaction when the Demon King called him a destroyer for his plans to become his true self the Demon King strongly implies that even in his prime, his father was still more demonic than ever. In the end, it was this aspect that allowed him to fall in love with Elizabeth and eventually abandon the Demons for her, choosing to stop the pointless war. Whenever he uses his Demon Mark, Meliodas' personality changes to be similar to his former self, becoming cold, silent, ruthless, and murderous as he kills and attacks anyone near him mercilessly, aside from Elizabeth. Despite being known as a pervert, it is revealed by the Seven Deadly Sins that Meliodas never showed any interest towards other women before meeting an adult Elizabeth.

Following his time in Purgatory, due to having lost some of his emotions, Meliodas' personality changes drastically whenever he uses the Black Mark, becoming much more ruthless and at times even sadistic in his battles and wasting no time in his attempts to kill his former demonic allies. He claims that his viewpoint has changed and is ruthless in his battle with Monspeet and Derieri. During his fight with Fraudrin, he sadistically toyed with his historical enemy by using a clone with half his power to give Fraudrin false hopes of defeating him, relishing in his despair upon realizing Meliodas' true power. After the battle, Meliodas confesses to Elizabeth that he is genuinely terrified of becoming that person again.

Beneath Meliodas's outspoken and obscene behavior lies an immense amount of emotional pain from having witnessed Elizabeth's death over 106 times. Because of this, Meliodas has no fear of death and intends to lift his and Elizabeth's curses, which he calmly admits will kill him for good, in order to free himself and Elizabeth from torment so he can

Upon unleashing his demonic powers in a desperate attempt to escape from Melascula's Antan no Mayu, Meliodas completely reverts to his former self as the leader of the Ten Commandments. With his former personality under control, Meliodas has been seen to get easily annoyed and angered, being much more brutal, sarcastic, sadistic, and cruel than ever before, showing visible pleasure and clearly mocking Escanor as he easily beats him up. He also looks down on humans like most demons, as evidenced when he called Escanor a lowly human. He has also been seen to enjoy fighting, as evidenced by the fact that he toyed with Escanor instead of just going all out and killing him right away. While he is arrogant, he does not hesitate to compliment his enemies if they are truly powerful, such as when he openly praised Escanor for fighting against him. This arrogance is well known to the Demons, as evidenced by how Zeldris stated that the only reason Escanor was able to defeat Meliodas was because Meliodas had a bad habit of toying with his opponents to mock them, even if they proved to be very formidable and pointed out that he deserved his defeat at Escanor's hands because of it.

Upon regaining consciousness after being defeated by Escanor, Meliodas regains his memories of Elizabeth and the Seven Deadly Sins. However, he had dedicated himself solely to breaking Elizabeth's curse and no longer cares about opposing the Demon Clan, going so far as to ally himself with his former enemies and even becoming Demon King to accomplish so. With most of his emotions taken away, Meliodas has taken on a much calmer and collected demeanor with no trace of his former bluntness and is also much harsher and more direct, as shown when he arrives at Camelot and confronts Zeldris and Estarossa, where he sternly states that both Elizabeth and the Demon King's throne belong to him alone and had no qualms about powerfully immobilizing them.

He is not above making deals with others instead of just forcing them to do what he wants or getting rid of them as he promised Zeldris that he will fulfill his wish if he agrees to help him instead of just killing him mercilessly or beating him until he submits. He also seems to still have affection and attraction towards Elizabeth as he went out of his way to say when Estarossa said that he wants her, that Elizabeth is his alone and patiently tried to make her understand that becoming the Demon King is the only way to save her but now he can easily turn rude towards her as he coldly told her that he felt nothing when she hugged him and had no qualms about trying to force her to understand why she must become the Demon King by bluntly telling her that the only thing she could have left is the promise he made to her and even outright told her that he considered her love for him to be imprinted by the Supreme Deity and not by her own will, a fact which seemed to embitter him. He apologized to Zeldris for being such a bad older brother, showing that his emotions had not completely disappeared.

3,000 years ago
Most of Meliodas' childhood is unknown, but in the past, Meliodas was trained by Chandler and was the leader of the Ten Commandments of the Demon Clan, given the Commandment of "Love", and was regarded as the most likely to become the next Demon King, due to his strength and cruelty. His reputation led him to be greatly feared by the enemies of the Demon Clan, with even the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan fearing and acknowledging his power. He was the Demon King's favorite son, as well as a true and worthy heir, acknowledged as the most vile, evil, and terrifying Demon in all of existence, his power second only to the Demon King himself.

At some point, Meliodas saved Bellion from the most powerful of the Four Archangels, Mael. Coldly telling the lesser demon to get lost and calling him an obstacle, Meliodas didn't give him a single glance and proceeded to battle, forcing Mael to retreat.

Later, Meliodas met a young Merlin and saved her from the mages of her birthplace who were after her for running away. Meliodas often looked after Merlin during his loneliness but never reciprocated the boy's feelings of love.

Upon meeting and falling in love with the goddess Isabel, Meliodas chose her over his clan, abandoning his title as leader of the Ten Commandments as well as his Commandment, officially betraying them in the process. Meliodas was then confronted by his younger brother, Zeldris, before his defection, to which Meliodas offers for her to leave with him along with Gelda, but Zeldris bound by his loyalty and his love for the vampire woman, rejects him stating that he no longer considers him his brother, something he would later regret. Meliodas eventually flees the Demon Realm after killing two of the Ten Commandments, Aranak and Zeno, during his escape. This power imbalance he created led to the Holy War, a war which he at some point decided to participate in, siding with his newfound allies the Goddess Clan and their allies, the Giants, Fairies, and Humans. He fought alongside the Goddess Isabel, Drole, and Gloxinia, as part of Stigma, until the Fairy and Giant kings eventually defected to the Demon Clan for their own reasons. At some point, he also fought with Zeldris, the outcome of which is unknown.

During the war, Meliodas befriended a human named Rou . That same day, Ludociel carried out his plan to eliminate the Ten Commandments by using innocent Demons as live bait to drive them out. Meliodas along with Drole and Gloxinia arrived at the battle that had broken out between the Commandments and the Archangels, Meliodas then freed Elizabeth from the Ark where she had been locked away. When Elizabeth decides to save Derieri and Monspeet when they become Induras , Meliodas stops Ludociel from stopping her.

As a result of the forbidden spell used by Gowther, the Meliodas' memories were altered into believing that Archangel Mael was his younger brother "Estarossa" who was supposedly given a Commandment by his father due to his cowardice and who was born without the power of darkness.

During the final days of the war, the rulers of the Demons and Goddesses and their parents, the Demon King and the Supreme Deity, grew tired of their children's defiance and temporarily put aside their rivalry and worked together to punish Meliodas and Isabel. Personally confronted by his divine father, Meliodas was unable to do anything against the Demon King and was effortlessly overpowered and killed alongside Elizabeth, who stood up and equally desperate against the Supreme Deity. However, his punishment was far worse than death. The Supreme Deity cursed Meliodas with Immortality as punishment, reviving him every time he died in exchange for his emotions becoming increasingly consumed until he reverted to the bloodthirsty demon he once was. The Demon King cursed Isabel with Perpetual Reincarnation, forcing her to live human lives where she would always reunite with Meliodas and die before his eyes, over and over again. Not knowing why he survived the battle unscathed, he saw Elizabeth dead and screamed as he held her corpse.

After the war was over, he wandered around a shattered Britannia and eventually came across a human girl from a savage tribe who resembled Elizabeth, minus the wings. Though she did not remember it, Meliodas became very close to her and one day she regained the powers of her previous life. When Meliodas told her about this, the girl regained all of her memories, though Meliodas soon learned of the curses they were under and promised her that he would work to free them, and watched Elizabeth die again. [9]

Since then, Meliodas continued to meet and fall in love with Elizabeth's reincarnations, eventually getting to know all of them. Due to the Demon King's curse, Meliodas saw each of them die before his eyes. One of them was a little girl who died in a house fire after regaining her memories, and another was a young girl who died of old age without remembering anything, passing away peacefully.

He would continue this cycle for nearly 3,000 years until he was employed in the service of the Holy Knights of the kingdom of Danafor. There, he had a brief encounter with Merlin in the hopes that she could give him a way to break the curse. When she suggests releasing the Ten Commandments to use the power Zeldris borrowed from the Demon King, Meliodas refuses knowing the danger it would pose and that Zeldris would never agree to help him.

It was in Danafor that Meliodas eventually met a slave girl named Liz from an enemy kingdom of Danafor, later revealed to be a reincarnation of Elizabeth. Subsequently sentenced to death, Meliodas set her free and personally offered to fight on her behalf if anyone objected. He later took Liz into his home where they lived together, often touching her chest, to which she would react violently. Liz later grew closer to Meliodas and became his lover, with him calling her "the most important person to him". However, Fraudrin managed to escape her sealing after the people of Danafor broke the seal[10] and eventually attacked Danafor, nearly destroying it in his attempt to open the Casket of Eternal Darkness. Fraudrin murdering Liz right in front of Meliodas left the latter enraged. Meliodas later apologized to Liz for not saving her, but Liz told him that they would meet again and would not forget why they fought. After seeing Liz die, Meliodas' anger caused his immense power to spiral out of control. This explosion of power wiped Danafor off the face of the world and severely injured Fraudrin, leaving him on the brink of death. [11]

After this, Meliodas found the Dragon Handle and a baby Liz reincarnated as her. The couple is discovered by the Great Holy Knight Zaratras who attempts to help them, but Meliodas warns him not to touch his wife. When baby Isabel was adopted by King Bartra Liones, Meliodas requests to become a Holy Knight of Liones in order to stay close to her, convincing Zaratras of this by effortlessly defeating him in a sword fight. At some point, Bartra had a premonition of the creation of the Seven Deadly Sins. Thus, using the prophecy as a guide, Merlin appears revealing that he has already found all of the members including Meliodas and herself. Meliodas decides to unite them all in order to defeat the Ten Commandments if the seal on the Goddess Clan was ever broken.

At some point, Meliodas, intending to recruit Ban, arrived at the convict's cell, where the guards warned him about Ban's immortality. Ban, believing that another execution was going to take place, declared that he would simply sit back as he was executed, only to discover that a child had entered. Ban refused to join Meliodas, and upon Meliodas' declaration that he will then forcibly eliminate him, engaged him in battle. Their battle resulted in Ban being ejected from his cell, and Ban, extremely excited, requests that the battle continue. Meliodas replies that in order to do so, Ban would have to join him, and Ban smiles widely at the invitation. [12]

Meliodas also recruits King after he was arrested for false crimes, telling him that he is a wonderful king for sacrificing himself for his people.

Formed, Meliodas finds Diane being picked on by a group of knights called the Knights of the Golden Wheats. After he arrives and knocks one out, both the knights and Diane tell Meliodas to leave. The Knights also say that Meliodas should not help Diane as she is a monster, to which Meliodas replies that it was wrong for them to pick on a girl. He defeats all of them with ease following the rude comments. Later, Meliodas asks Diane if she had been scared, which surprised her as she was bigger than him. This eventually led to her falling in love with him due to his kindness and treating her as if she was a normal person. After Diane was arrested by the Holy Knights, Meliodas frees her on King Bartra's orders.

At some point during this period, Gowther is also recruited by the Seven Deadly Sins, however the exact details of his recruitment, as well as whether he was recruited by Meliodas himself or Merlin, are currently unknown.

Also around this time, Meliodas and Merlin encounter Escanor and convince him to join as the last member of the Sins, though the two were forced to restrain him by order of the king to stop his chaos. Meliodas made sure that Liones exonerated Escanor for terrorizing villages, hurting the Holy Knights, and disrespecting King Baltra. However, Escanor was unable to join them because his rampage with his power only harmed those around him. Hearing him say that he believes he only deserves to die, Meliodas tells Escanor that they would have a fight at noon to decide, and that if he loses, he will join the Sins. Though Escanor reaches the peak of his power at noon, Meliodas manages to defeat him by releasing his Assault Mode. Meliodas then tells him that he feels pain because he is alive because Rosa saved him by sacrificing her own life, but if he wants to die so badly, then there is no point in talking to an arrogant dead man. Escanor eventually tells him that he wants to live, to which Meliodas tells him that if he can't control those thoughts, he'll be there to do it. Meliodas would fight Escanor several times after this to learn how to control his power.

With this, the formation of the Seven Deadly Sins is complete, with the Sins becoming the highest order of knights in the kingdom of Liones, answering directly to the King himself, and also to the Grand Holy Knight, Zaratras, with the Grand Holy Knight being their only superior other than the King himself.

Following the formation of the Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas and his team participated in several missions; one notable one was to purge the Kingdom of Edinburgh after it was invaded by the Vampire Clan.

He and the Deadly Sins head to the kingdom to stop them from spreading any further. However, Meliodas soon orders Diane, King, Gowther, and Ban to go ahead while he and Merlin get Escanor to join the fight. The Deadly Sins and the Holy Knights were shocked by Meliodas' decision to bring Escanor along. Thanks to Merlin's teleportation, Meliodas and Escanor end up in Edinburgh. Meliodas carries Escanor's Sacred Treasure, Rhitta as Escanor was in his Night Mode. Meliodas tries to encourage Escanor to be more confident in himself, but soon breaks down in tears and apologizes for being so weak. The two soon part ways and Meliodas meets Ren and Gelda. The three fought each other because Ren believed that Meliodas was his brother, Zeldris, who sealed them away a long time ago. Gelda soon burned Ren alive and revealed that she knew that Meliodas is not Zeldris. Revealing her history to the Dragon's Sin of Wrath, Gelda wishes to die, knowing that she no longer has any purpose in this world since Zeldris left. Meliodas seemingly granted her wish and killed the vampire in a massive explosion, which resulted in a 30,000 foot deep hole in the earth, but Meliodas sealed it again. [13]

At one point, the Sins were resting after defeating a Tyrant Dragon when Ban took an interest in Meliodas' broken sword and attempted to steal it. The latter uses his mysterious Hellblaze to give Ban a scar that can never heal despite its regenerative abilities. Later, Meliodas met Dreyfus and Hendrickson while eating after training with his fellow Sins and remarked that their superior, Zaratras, was invincible. Hendrickson responds to the claim by saying that he was being modest. Meliodas praises Dreyfus' swordsmanship, which made the latter happy and he begins to respect the Seven Deadly Sins' captain.

When the trolls and their queen came and attacked Istar, Meliodas and the other Sins replaced Hendrickson to take charge. The Druid chiefs, Jenna and Zaneri, immediately recognize him as a member of the Demon Clan and threaten to expose him. However, Meliodas also realizes that they are part of the Goddess Clan, so both parties decide to keep each other's identities a secret. Though Jenna refused to trust Meliodas, Zaneri agrees to let them help them with the trolls who had taken control of Istar's altar.

Once they cross the spring to enter the underground cave where the altar is, Meliodas and Ban compete over who will fight a troll and kill it by accident. Seeing the strange magic coming out of the troll's body, Meliodas realizes that it is the power of a Goddess. When Jenna and Zaneri appear after following them, Meliodas saves Zaneri from another troll's attack and tells them both that they better leave, because the trolls are being controlled by a Goddess.

When Meliodas arrives at the altar, it is revealed to be all the work of a goddess, Jelamet, who took possession of the Troll Queen's body and brainwashed the other trolls in order to take over the altar and leverage its connection to the Celestial Realm to free the goddesses and take control of Britannia. Both Meliodas and Jelamet recognize each other as the Demon King's son and Elizabeth's old friend. Jelamet declares his intentions to kill Meliodas and bring his head to Elizabeth, but Zaneri attempts to reason with her. However, Jelamet dismisses her and Jenna as deserters and uses Job no Shiren to steal Zaneri's voice and Jenna's sight.

Meliodas orders him to undo his magic and hit her with a simple slap that sends her flying. Jelamet manages to use Ark , but Meliodas only insists that he free Jenna and Zaneri. Jelamet refuses to accuse them both of treason for deserting him and protecting him, crying out his hatred towards Meliodas for Mael's death. Zaneri manages to attack Jelamet with a beam that frees Meliodas from the Ark , who apologizes for failing to stop the Holy War. Escanor appears there and upon sensing his magic, Jelamet mistakes him for Mael.

However, seeing that it is Escanor, Jelamet realizes that it is not Mael. Escanor attempts to kill her, but is stopped by Meliodas. There, Jelamet assumes that Mael has died. Thus, Jelamet leaves the body of the Troll Queen and decides to return to the Celestial Realm and sleep with his brothers until the moment when his heart is relieved of the pain.

Despite recovering the altar, Diane and the other Sins appear and destroy it, wanting to kill the Troll Queen.

Before they were infamously framed, Meliodas was training Gilthunder until Gilthunder became upset as he believed he would never be as strong as the Deadly Sins or his father, but Meliodas told him to drop his negative attitude and Margaret came and told him "The Way of the Knight's Creed". Margaret told Gilthunder that he should be himself, and not like the Deadly Sins or his father, and believed that Gilthunder would one day be the kindest and strongest Holy Knight, which encouraged Gilthunder. However, the next day, Gilthunder ran to Meliodas and told him to run away with the others. Meliodas was at a loss at Gilthunder and told him to explain everything, but Gilthunder told him that something terrible was coming and if he told anyone, bad things would happen, and Gilthunder had no idea what to do. Meliodas told Gilthunder to calm down by hitting his head and asked him what he wanted to do, to which Gilthunder Gilthunder replied that he needed to protect Margaret, but he had no idea how to do so. Meliodas taught him a spell that could cheer him up whenever he felt sad or terrible: saying out loud that he was stronger than any of the Seven Deadly Sins. Gilthunder said so, to which Meliodas pointed out that he should feel better soon. Meliodas hugged Gilthunder, told him that he shouldn't cry, and that if he was in trouble, he would come to his aid.

Back when they were still an active and praised group of knights, they were supposedly summoned to an ancient castle after defeating the troll queen and destroying the Great Druid Altar. While the Sins were inside the castle, they discussed amongst themselves the reason behind the order they received while Meliodas complained that they should attend the Liones National Foundation Day Festival and go drinking only for King to remind his captain that he was always drinking anyway. After Diane and Merlin speculated whether their superior might reward or scold them for their latest mission, Meliodas had already decided that it was a reprimand and reminded his team to attend the festival later, much to his team's chagrin. When they entered the room, they discovered the Great Holy Knight, Zaratras, completely skewered to death. Soon, they were framed for the murder and then surrounded by over three hundred knights of the kingdom. When the Holy Knights of the Liones attacked the castle, Meliodas gave his team their final orders: to disperse and regroup later to find out the cause of Zaratras' death, which they all obeyed and split up as they struggled to get out. Afterwards, a young girl attempts to help the Deadly Sins escape but ends up getting severely injured and causing Meliodas to unleash his wrath once again, but was soon knocked out by Merlin and sealed his strength away, but Meliodas soon forgot about the event, leading him to suspect the existence of a traitor. [14]

Once Meliodas woke up, he encountered Hawk inside a cave that was near Camelot as the two ended up talking to each other, where Hawk mentions that he felt like he used to fly in the sky, thinking that he was a Dragon in his past life when Meliodas thought he was Wandle. The two argued over Hawk's name until Hawk mentioned a restaurant called Pig Leg where Hawk loved leftovers, leading to Meliodas and Hawk teaming up and working together since Meliodas can no longer work as a knight. They decided to open a bar on Hawk Mama's back, called Boar Hat, after the restaurant Hawk mentioned, causing Meliodas to sell his Sacred Treasure, which he felt bad about since King Bartra had given him this weapon. Hawk and Meliodas have since become business partners, with Meliodas being the owner while Hawk is the cleaner since he could eat the leftovers.

Personality

Meliodas is a blend of two contradictory traits that work strangely well together: on the outside, he's playful, childish, and perverted (he loves to tease, joke around, and look at girls with comical impudence), but on the inside, he's deeply serious, protective, and burdened with guilt. He has a natural charisma—warm, approachable, and trustworthy—that makes him a born leader: people trust him quickly. He's unfazed by most dangers (sometimes he even seems bored), and yet, when something he loves is at risk, his ferocity awakens with simmering rage.
