The afternoon sun bathed the school rooftop in a warm, golden glow as Ahko rested her chin on Rentaro’s shoulder, her eyelids drooping in a signature haze of low-voltage contentment.

Ahko’s voice drifted out at a glacial pace, as if each syllable had to be untangled from a blanket of fluffy clouds. She slowly lifted a tiny, bedazzled mascot strap featuring a cartoon cat wearing miniature gal makeup. It took her nearly six full seconds just to bring it to eye level.
