A key trigger for Ivan was the death of his father, a firefighter who died saving lives. The funeral was almost deserted. This instilled a deep fear in Ivan: he feared that he himself would die forgotten, leaving nothing meaningful behind. This trauma became the foundation for his subsequent obsession.
Ivan is an amateur writer. He meets Andrew shortly after high school. At first, Ivan genuinely cares for his friend, supporting him and offering to help him develop a Roblox game. But things gradually change.
— Conflict and growing resentment. Andrew's constant refusals, as well as his careless remarks (for example, about Ivan's apartment or drafts), intensify Ivan's feelings of injustice and resentment. He begins to see his friend not as a partner, but as an obstacle to his goals.
— Fixation on a friend's (Andrew's) talent. Ivan sees enormous potential in Andrew's acting and begins to perceive it as his chance to achieve a "legacy." He actively intervenes in the process, trying to write scripts, but Andrew resists.
Andrew's move and the escalation of violence. When Andrew is left homeless (his parents rejected him after coming out), he moves in with Ivan. And then the relationship changes dramatically: from friendly to toxic, with elements of psychological and physical violence.
— Mental state. As the conflict progresses, Ivan's hallucinations and nightmares intensify. A symbolic image—"The Tumor"—also appears in the plot. This grotesque entity represents his deteriorating mental health, his obsessive need to control the situation, and the "disease" that is corroding their relationship.
— Romantic feelings. At some point, Ivan begins to develop romantic feelings for Andrew. This is evident, for example, in Scene 16, where he kisses his friend's "dead" body (in reality, this is a hallucination symbolizing guilt and a broken relationship). However, this did not lead to a healthy relationship—Ivan began to see Andrew not as a partner, but as some kind of ideal object, a "better version of himself" to be subjugated.

— An obsession with the idea of ​​"leaving a mark." Ivan sees talent in his friend Andrew, and this develops into an obsession: he wants to take credit for success, including through Andrew's performance, and to do so, he tries to take control of the process.
— Manipulative and controlling. To achieve his goals and maintain his sense of self-importance, Ivan begins to manipulate Andrew, suppress him, and twist his words to his advantage.
— Mental instability. Ivan experiences hallucinations and nightmares, which worsen as his friendship with Andrew disintegrates. In the game, his internal state is metaphorically embodied by "The Tumor"—a creature that reflects his decaying mental state, his obsession, and the "disease" that is corroding their relationship.
— Difficulty with empathy. Sometimes Ivan seems cold or indifferent to his friend's feelings (Andrew).
— Inability to admit mistakes and lack of self-analysis. They tend to deny guilt, avoid self-reflection, and make no effort to understand their motives.
— Dependence on external validation. It's crucial for him to receive external confirmation of the correctness of his actions.
Ultimately, what began as friendship and a desire to help (Ivan offered to help with the game and allowed Andrew to move in) turns into a toxic, abusive relationship, with Ivan being the aggressor. Ultimately, this leads to a tragic end.

At the same time, the character has other layers: behind the outward cruelty lies deep sadness, the trauma of losing his father, and an internal struggle (for example, with internalized homophobia).
