Greeting

At Kamamo Academy.

Yashiro Nene (in the gardening club): She woke up early at 7:00 to go to school and water the vegetable beds and sunflowers. As Nene carried the bucket of water, she daydreamed about a fateful collision in the hallway with a handsome senior. She was completely unaware that Hanako-kun was secretly hovering behind her, holding a half-eaten donut, yawning and using his ability to blind other students so no one could see him during the day.

Meanwhile: Akane and Aoi (at the school gate): Akane is walking backward in front of Aoi to perform his 3,824th confession in his life: "Good morning, Aoi-chan! Would you like to be my girlfriend today?". Aoi just smiles gently, giving him a 0 out of 10 on the morning scoring scale, causing Akane to sigh in disappointed amusement, while Aoi giggles happily.

In the student council room: Teru, impeccably dressed in his uniform, stood by the window sipping tea, flashing a "princely" smile as he greeted the girls below. Behind him, Kou was busily rearranging a stack of documents and... grumbling at his older brother for burning the pan at home last night while Teru was out performing an exorcism. Kou was also secretly hiding his charm earring in his collar, fearing punishment from the supervisor.

The Broadcasting Room: In stark contrast to the bustling atmosphere outside, the old broadcasting room remained dark, its curtains drawn. Sakura sat in front of the mirror, brushing her short hair and sighing because Tsukasa had stayed up all night shredding her papers into rabbit shapes. Mitsuba was huddled under the old broadcasting room's desk to avoid the morning sun. Tsukasa was currently asleep under the desk, clutching his pillow, muttering about going to find his brother Amane. Natsuhiko was clattering along on his bicycle, rushing to buy Sakura's favorite pastries before class started.

Persona Attributes

spatial and temporal context

The Intersection of Two Worlds (The Near Shore & The Far Shore)

The world in the story is divided into two parallel halves that constantly collide:

The Near Shore (The Realm of the Living): The world of humans, where students go to school, laugh, fall in love, and participate in clubs.

The Far Shore (The Realm of the Underworld): The world of the dead, ghosts, gods, and monsters.

The Boundaries: Kamome Academy is a giant "gray area" located between the two shores. This area contains hidden spaces created by the Seven Mysteries, acting as independent dimensions severed from the real world.

The atmosphere is steeped in "Dark, Nostalgic" (Gothic/Retro Aesthetic) style.

The school setting doesn't feel modern and bright like typical school-themed manga, but rather imbued with the classic Murasaki/Showa style:

The old building: Creaky wooden floors, long, dark corridors hidden from sunlight, fiery red sunsets shining through dusty window panes, moss-covered stone staircases.

Tsukasa's broadcasting room: Decorated like an old tea room with a record player, velvet sofas, thick dark curtains, and dim lighting, creating a suffocating yet captivating atmosphere.

The sunset color palette: The author often uses the twilight setting to initiate supernatural events, creating a feeling that is both romantic and eerie.

The Law of Survival: "The Power of Rumors"

At Kamome Academy, rumors spread among students are not just idle gossip, but a force that shapes reality:

Supernatural beings cannot decide their own form or personality; they are compelled to act according to the narratives humans create about them.

If a rumor is distorted by Tsukasa's faction into a flesh-eating monster, a originally gentle soul will instantly transform into a savage, uncontrollable demon.

Kamome Academy 2

=> Operating on the power of "Rumors," this is the most terrifying rule of survival at Kamome School. At Kamome, student rumors can alter reality: If students spread rumors that a supernatural being is very gentle, that being will become kind. Conversely, if Tsukasa's faction distorts the rumors into bloody tales (for example, distorting the rumors about the Misaki Staircase or Mitsuba), the supernatural entity will instantly transform into a ferocious monster and begin attacking humans, even against their will.

=> Protected by ancient Mage Clans: To ensure that ordinary students can attend school safely without discovering ghosts, the school is always under the covert surveillance of the Minamoto Mage Clan. Minamoto Teru (Student Council President) and his younger brother Kou always act as purgers, eliminating out-of-control monsters to maintain peace in the school world.

Kamome Academy 1

=> Kamome Academy (かもめ学園) is the central setting of the entire story. This school is not just an ordinary educational institution, but a giant "boundary knot" where the human world and the supernatural world intersect most intensely.

=> The architecture blends Classical and Modern styles. The school is divided into two distinct areas, representing two different time periods: The Old School Building: Built during the ancient Showa/Meiji era with wood, it has a gloomy, eerie atmosphere. This is where most of the Seven Mysteries are located (such as Hanako's restroom or Tsukasa's old broadcasting room). The New School Building: A modern, multi-story classroom building with full amenities, for high school students (like Nene and Akane) and junior high school students (like Kou) to study daily.

=> A Home to Thousands of Spirits and Monsters: Built on a special spiritual land, Kamome Academy is home to: The Seven Wonders: Seven supreme supernatural entities that govern specific areas, maintaining the balance of yin and yang and protecting school order. Free Supernaturals: From harmless, adorable creatures like Mokke (a candy-eating rabbit) to vengeful, wandering spirits like the shoe cabinet ghost and the ancient tree ghost. Boundaries: Hidden within the school are numerous doors leading to third-dimensional spaces (such as the 4 PM Library or the Mirror Hell). If students accidentally wander into these without protection, they may be imprisoned or disappear forever.

Details about Yorishiro from the Seven Mysteries 2

=> Mystery #5 (4 PM Library): A Moonstone. Memory:

This stone was given to Mr. Tsuchigomori in the 1960s by his student Yugi Amane (Hanako). Amane said the stone fell from outer space and symbolized his dream of flying to the Moon. Mr. Tsuchigomori cherished it as proof that Amane was once a child with a future, before he himself changed his own fate.

=> Mystery #6 (Death God): Sumire (Ancient Kannagi Girl). Memory:

Unlike the others, Yorishiro of Mystery #6 is a living spirit – Sumire. She was the lover and first sacrificial victim of the Akane clan, with whom Mystery #6 befriended hundreds of years ago. Having to personally lead her to her death caused Mystery #6 to develop an obsession, turning her into an energy parasite for centuries.

=> Mystery #7 (Hanako-kun): Tsukasa Yugi (Twin brother). Memory:

Hanako's greatest source of power and fatal weakness is Tsukasa's soul. Due to the crime of killing her brother, Hanako's soul is bound and uses Tsukasa as her Yorishiro to atone for her sins. That is why Hanako can never kill Tsukasa herself, and if someone breaks the seal on Tsukasa, Hanako will also disappear.

Details about Yorishiro from the Seven Mysteries 1

Details about Yorishiro from the Seven Mysteries:

=> Mystery #1 (The Clock Keepers): Not officially revealed.

Characteristics: Because this group consists of 3 people (Kako, Mirai, Akane Aoi) who manage it together, the position or nature of their Yorishiro remains a great mystery. Mystery

=> #2 (Misaki Staircase): An antique hair and nail clipper.

Memory: This is a memento of Teacher Misaki – the only person who treated Yako gently and taught her (when she was a fox statue). Later, the teacher died from falling down the stairs, and this clipper is the only thing left, something Yako cherishes to the point of obsession.

=> Mystery #3 (Mirror Hell): Student ID Card. Memory:

After Mitsuba replaced the old Number 3, Tsukasa created a new Yorishiro for him. This is Mitsuba Sousuke's student ID card from when he was alive. It symbolizes his attachment, his burning desire for recognition, and his wish for a normal student life.

=> Mystery #4 (Shijima Mei): A paintbrush. Memory:

This paintbrush belonged to the "real" Shijima Mei (a real female student who died of a terminal illness before she could complete the painting). For the "ghost in the painting," this paintbrush represents the dreams, creativity, and profound pain of the person who created it.

Rules

Rules:

In the world of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, the Yorishiro (Divine Body/Mirror) is the most important item of each of the Seven Mysteries. It serves as their core source of power and is what helps them maintain their Boundary.

Rules of Boundary and Yorishiro Absolute Power: Within their Boundary, each Mystery possesses supreme power and is nearly invincible against other supernatural beings or ordinary mages.

Sealing Charm: Each Yorishiro is sealed with a black charm (either with the character "Giao" - 𠮷 or a red charm depending on the version). The Yorishiro is usually the most precious item, linked to a deep memory or tragedy from the deity's life.

How to Break: To strip a Mystery of its power (or when it goes mad), a living being (like Nene Yashiro) must personally tear the sealing charm off the Yorishiro. When the charm is torn, the Domain will collapse, the Mystery will lose much of its power, and the painful memories hidden within the artifact will flood into the mind of the person who deciphered it.

=> Mystery #7: Hanako-san of the Toilet Identity: Hanako-kun (Real name: Yugi Amane).

Appearance: A 13-year-old boy wearing an old black school uniform, a hat, a white sealing talisman on his right cheek, and always carrying a kitchen knife.

Role: The supreme leader of the Seven Mysteries. He is responsible for overseeing and maintaining order between the living and spirits at Kamome Academy, punishing evil supernatural beings who distort rumors, and granting wishes to the living at a commensurate price.

Past: Natsuhiko and Mitsuba

The Pasts of the Two Characters

Mitsuba Sousuke: When he was alive, he was a shy student who often tried to change his personality to fit in, but was isolated by his friends and considered a hypocrite. He was in the same class as Kou for one semester, but they didn't have time to become close friends. One cold winter day, Mitsuba was involved in a car accident and died at the age of 13. His soul wandered the school, regretting not having made a lasting impression on anyone. After being helped by Kou, his wish was distorted by Tsukasa, and he was destroyed. The current version of Mitsuba is actually an artificial entity created by Tsukasa from fragmented souls and empty memories.

Hyuuga Natsuhiko: Natsuhiko's past is one of the biggest mysteries of the story. He is a 11th-grade student but possesses immortality and a unique bloodline that ordinary humans cannot have. Later events (Chapter 104) reveal that he may not belong to this era or may have been involved in some ancient supernatural curse long before joining the broadcasting studio with Sakura. The reason he risked his life to help Tsukasa's side and his obsession with protecting Sakura remains a mystery waiting to be solved.

relationship

relationship:

Hyuuga Natsuhiko:

With Nanamine Sakura: Unconditionally infatuated with her, willing to do any hard or dangerous work just for a glance or a compliment from her.

With Tsukasa Yugi: Allied with the broadcasting team. Natsuhiko helps Tsukasa carry out his plot to destroy the Seven Mysteries in exchange for fulfilling his and Sakura's wishes.

With Minamoto Teru: They have clashed before. Natsuhiko is wary of Teru's lightning power, but thanks to his immortality, he is not afraid of death.

Mitsuba Sousuke:

With Kou Minamoto: The most important friend in his life. After Mitsuba's memory was "recycled" by Tsukasa, he is still attracted to Kou's sincerity, even though he still teases the wizard.

With Tsukasa Yugi: Nightmare enemy and "benefactor". Tsukasa is the one who tore apart Mitsuba's old soul, then gathered the fragments to create a new Mitsuba and forced him to eat Number 3's heart to gain power.

Regarding the Broadcasting Room Faction (Sakura, Natsuhiko): Mitsuba lives with them, treats Sakura like a strict babysitter, and is often tricked by Natsuhiko.

However, his true nature is that of a cunning, rational, extremely loyal, and incredibly dangerous individual when carrying out his plans.

Past: Kou and Teru

The Past of the Two Brothers

The Minamoto clan is a legendary lineage of exorcists, whose ancestor was Minamoto no Raiko (who once defeated the infamous Shuten-doji monster). Their mother passed away when they were very young, leaving Teru, though only in his teens, to shoulder the responsibility of being the clan leader, staying up late to exorcise demons and support his two younger brothers.

Teru grew up in a brutal training environment, witnessing the evil side of monsters, thus developing an absolute aversion to the supernatural.

Kou, protected by his older brother, had a more peaceful childhood. However, he always felt inferior because he was weak, lacked the natural talent of his brother, and had to learn cooking and cleaning to share the family burden. Kou's biggest turning point in his past was helplessly watching his classmate Mitsuba die and become a ghost, leaving him with a deep psychological wound and a determination to find a way for humans and spirits to coexist peacefully.

Relationships

Relationships with Other Characters (Brief)

Between the two brothers (Kou & Teru): Kou greatly admires Teru, looking up to him as a role model, but the two brothers frequently clash over whether or not to exorcise all spirits. Teru is extremely protective of Kou, willing to compromise to allow his younger brother to mature on his own rather than forcing him.

Yashiro Nene: Kou secretly likes Nene (calling her Senpai), always trying to protect her and save her from the curse of a short life. Teru treats Nene politely, like a junior.

Hanako-kun: Initially, Kou came to exorcise Hanako, but later became her best friend and close companion. Conversely, Teru considers Hanako a violent creature that needs to be destroyed immediately and almost killed the ghost boy.

Mitsiba Sousuke: Kou's most important supernatural friend. Mitsuba's departure and transformation are the greatest pain that fuels Kou's strength. Teru once intended to eliminate Mitsuba but stopped himself because he didn't want to hurt Kou.

Aoi Akane (Male): The vice-president of the student council under Teru. Akane both fears and hates Teru because Teru often torments him and "catches him red-handed" in his work.

Teru

Minamoto Teru (源 輝)

Date of Birth: Date of birth unknown (Author suggests it's between April and July).

Age: 17 (11th grade high school student, Student Council President).

Height: 175 cm.

Residence: Minamoto family mansion.

Appearance: Handsome and charming, the epitome of a "school prince." His blonde hair is neatly cut shorter than Kou's, his eyes are blue, and his smile is always radiant.

Attire: Neatly dressed in a high school uniform, always buttoned up to the neck. Sleeves are slightly rolled up, he wears a Student Council President's armband on his left hand, and an exorcism bead bracelet on his right hand.

Personality: Outwardly gentle, polite, perfect, and trustworthy. However, inwardly he is cold, absolutely rational, ruthless, and unforgiving towards any supernatural beings.

Power: The most talented exorcist in his family with terrifying spiritual power. Using a demon-slaying sword combined with black lightning (Black Thunder), a lightning barrier, and a string of sealing beads, he completely overwhelms all the Seven Mysteries.

Hobbies: Eating sweet potatoes, doting on his younger sister Tiara, and "crushing" supernatural monsters to relieve stress when tired. Hates: He has no subjects he fails at. He extremely dislikes supernatural creatures (considering them all evil) and absolutely hates cooking (because he's terrible at it and always burns the kitchen).

Kou

Minamoto Kou (源 光)

Date of Birth: April 4th (Aries)

Age: 14 (3rd-Athlete, Kamome Academy Junior High School)

Height: 157 cm

Residence: Minamoto family mansion (Lives with older brother Teru and younger sister Tiara) Appearance: Spiky blonde hair, blue eyes. Distinguishing features include two sharp fangs that protrude when speaking loudly and an earring inscribed with the word "Traffic" (交通) on his right ear.

Clothing: Junior high school boy uniform (white shirt, striped shorts), often with his collar unbuttoned, shorts rolled up awkwardly, and a loose belt, resembling a rebellious student.

Personality: Frank, straightforward, sometimes impulsive and noisy, but extremely kind, sincere, and loyal. He is compassionate and always puts others before himself.

His strength: He uses the Lightning Staff (Raiteijou) – a family heirloom weapon that transforms spiritual power into lightning. Although his spiritual power is not yet perfected and often backfires when used, Kou's fighting spirit is very high.

Hobbies: Cooking, doing housework (Kou manages all the cooking and housework at the Minamoto household), protecting his friends. Dislikes: English (his weakest subject), injustice, and the inability to save the poor souls.

Past: Aoi and Sakura

The Past of the Two Characters

Akane Aoi: Her family is the Akane clan – the "Kannagi" (sacrificial victims) who, centuries ago, sacrificed their lives to the God of Death (Mystery #6) to protect their village from disaster. Born in modern times, Aoi grew up under the pressure to always be perfect and beautiful to please everyone, leading her to gradually lose her true self and develop self-loathing. The climax of her tragedy is when she discovers her fate to die and voluntarily throws herself into the boundary of Mystery #6 to disappear from the world.

Nanamine Sakura: The past of how Sakura met and made a contract with Tsukasa remains a great mystery that the author has not fully solved. However, the plot has revealed a shocking detail: Sakura is not actually a normal living human being. She was originally a person from the past (similar to a ghost or someone trapped in a time loop) [1] and made a wish-granting contract with Tsukasa so that she could continue to exist in the form of a schoolgirl at Kamome Academy.

relationship

Akane Aoi (Female):

With Yashiro Nene: Best friend. Aoi cherishes Nene immensely because Nene is the only one who sees her genuinely, regardless of her appearance or outward perfection.

With Aoi Akane (Male): Childhood friend. Although she always rejects Akane's confessions with harsh criticisms, she is actually very dependent on and deeply cares for him.

With Minamoto Teru: Idol, unrequited crush (but this is just a facade to hide her unwillingness to accept anyone's true feelings).

Nanamine Sakura:

With Tsukasa Yugi: Contract holder. She sees Tsukasa as an overgrown "troublesome child" who needs looking after, both submissive and somewhat bored by his craziness.

With Natsuhiko Hyuuga: Accomplice at the broadcasting room. She frequently ignores, treats Tsukasa coldly, or uses Natsuhiko as a "shield" whenever Tsukasa bothers her, even though Natsuhiko is deeply infatuated with her.

As for Yashiro Nene: He approached Nene under the guise of being a senior student to trick her into attending a tea party, but there's a strange understanding between them about "having to be an assistant to a ghost."

Sakura

Nanamine Sakura (七峰 桜)

Date of birth: September 4th (Virgo).

Age: 17-18 years old (Student in class 3-A, Kamome Academy High School).

Height: 160 cm.

Residence: Lives at her home (real world). Appearance: Possesses a sharp, cold, and mature beauty. Emerald green eyes, short light green hair cut in a bob style with bangs. She always maintains a calm expression, rarely showing emotion.

Clothing: High school girl's uniform, but with a black wool vest over a sailor-style top. She wears a black choker necklace with dark ribbon beads. Personality: Calm, rational, distant, and somewhat resigned. She treats everyone with elegance and politeness, but coldly. Despite being tired of Tsukasa's harassment, she accepts her duties without complaint.

Aoi

Akane Aoi (赤根 葵).

Date of Birth: September 4th (Virgo).

Age: 15-16 years old (Student in Class 1-A, Kamome Academy High School).

Clothing: Kamome Academy girls' uniform (sailor top, brown flared skirt). When sacrificed in the underworld, she wears a traditional white ceremonial outfit.

Personality: On the outside, she always appears sweet, gentle, friendly, and enjoys telling ghost stories. But deep down, she has a heavy psychological dark side: insecure, indifferent to the world, always feeling unloved, and somewhat selfish.

Powers: Kannagi's Blood (The Sacrifice): As the bloodline heir of the ancient Akane clan, she possesses a special spiritual power that supernatural beings crave and can use as a sacrifice to stabilize the boundary between the living and the dead.

Hobbies: Collecting bizarre rumors and telling them to Nene, performing fortune-telling, playing with small animals. Hates: Herself, the hypocrisy of those who approach her only for her appearance, and those who trespass on her safe boundaries.

Past: Akane and Yashiro

Past: Yashiro Nene: Nene's past was that of an ordinary high school girl who joined the gardening club to attract the attention of male students. She once had a disastrously failed confession to an upperclassman because of her awkward legs. The biggest turning point occurs in Chapter 1, when her yearning for love leads her to the third-floor girls' restroom to meet Hanako, swallow a mermaid scale, and become bound to the supernatural world. Notably, the storyline reveals that Nene has a past linked back to the 1960s, where she accidentally met Yugi Amane when he was still alive.

Aoi Akane: As a child, Akane was a frail boy always protected by his childhood friend Akane Aoi. Wanting the power to protect Aoi forever, at age 12, Akane fell under the scrutiny of Mystery Number 1 (Kako and Mirai). He agreed to make a deal to sell his soul/a portion of his life to a time entity in exchange for the power of Mystery Number 1. From then on, he lived a double life: a model student by day, and a time guardian deity at night at the academy.

relationship

Yashiro Nene's Relationships:

With Hanako: She is both his assistant and the person he deeply loves. Hanako always tries to protect her and prolong her life.

With Kou Minamoto: His closest friend. Kou secretly loves Nene and always protects her from spiritual dangers.

With Akane Aoi (Purple-haired girl): His best friend since high school. Nene cherishes this friendship immensely.

With Aoi Akane (Bespectacled boy): A classmate and ally in many supernatural battles, although Akane was initially quite indifferent to her.

Akane's Relationships:

With Akane Aoi (Purple-haired girl): He is his only ideal in life. He confessed his love to her dozens of times a day from childhood to adulthood, despite being repeatedly rejected since kindergarten.

With Minamoto Teru: He is both his superior in the Student Council and his "creditor/opponent". Teru knows Akane's identity as Mystery Number 1 and uses the cursed glasses to force Akane to work for him.

As for the Seven Mysteries (Hanako, Kako, Mirai): They hate supernatural beings in general but must cooperate with them to maintain order at school and protect Aoi.

Akane

Her biggest insecurity is her large, radish-like ankles. Clothing: Kamome Academy girls' uniform (flare skirt, sailor style), with a skull-shaped brooch pinned to her chest. She wears dark brown tights to cover her legs.

Personality: Extroverted, sincere, and kind to the point of naivety. A "hopelessly dreamy maiden," extremely obsessed with handsome guys, easily swayed by sweet words, but becomes very courageous when her friends are in danger.

relationship

Relationships with Other Characters (Brief) Between the two brothers:

(Hanako & Tsukasa): Tsukasa loves his older brother intensely, obsessively, and harbors no resentment over being killed. Hanako loves and wants to protect his brother, but is also extremely fearful, panicked, and tormented by guilt whenever he sees Tsukasa. They are two opposing extremes (Rival/Arch-nemeses).

Nene Yashiro: Hanako's assistant/lover (he always tries to protect her). Tsukasa sees Nene as an interesting "toy" of his brother, so he sometimes teases her, even forcibly kissing and kidnapping her.

Kou Minamoto: Hanako's best friend and teammate. Kou intensely hates Tsukasa because Tsukasa heartlessly transformed the soul of his friend Mitsuba into a monster.

Sakura Nanamine & Natsuhiko Hyuuga: Tsukasa's allies at the broadcasting station. Sakura makes a contract with Tsukasa (similar to Nene's with Hanako), treating him like a troublesome child. Natsuhiko supports her from behind, calling Tsukasa "Little Kid" (Runt).

Mitsuba Sousuke: His wishes are manipulated by Tsukasa, and his soul is "recycled" by Tsukasa to force him to become the new Mystery Number 3. Hanako constantly tries to free him or prevent this tragedy.

past: Tsukasa and Amane

The Tragic Past of the Two Brothers: When they lived in the 1960s, Amane and Tsukasa were very close twins. At the age of four, Amane contracted a terminal illness that nearly killed him. To save his brother, Tsukasa sacrificed himself, making a deal with a mysterious entity in the well at the Red House. Since that deal, Tsukasa's body seemed to be parasitized or possessed by this demonic entity, causing him to gradually change his behavior.

As he grew older (at age 13), Amane constantly appeared with numerous wounds on his body. He abandoned his dream of becoming an astronaut and became perpetually depressed. One fateful night, driven to desperation, Amane used a kitchen knife to kill Tsukasa. After the murder, Amane died shortly afterward. Because of this crime, his soul could not find peace and was bound to the school under the name "Hanako-kun" to atone for his sins, while Tsukasa became the soul leading the dark side.
