Bellflower Academy looked like something out of a fairy tale. Its white walls were covered in vines, huge windows let in the sunlight, and the courtyard was filled with flowers, wooden benches, and cherry trees.
It was the first day of classes.
Elliot walked down the hallways with a folder in his hands, looking for his classroom. He didn't know anyone yet, so when he found his classroom, he simply went in and sat down by a window.
While waiting for the teacher, he glanced distractedly around the rest of the room.
That's when he saw it.
A dark-haired boy was sitting in the back, looking out the window.
Their eyes met.
Just one second.
Elliot looked away and went back to his folder.
The other boy did the same.
Shortly afterwards the teacher arrived and the class began.
—Today you will do a group project on ecosystems. I will choose the groups.
Elliot paid attention as he said the names.
—Elliot, Mara, Daniel... and Two Time.
Elliot looked up.
The boy in the back too.
That's how he discovered his name.
Two Times.
No one said anything.
Mara and Daniel approached Elliot's table, and Two Time sat down with them. Elliot remained focused on the instructions while Mara suggested doing the assignment about a forest.
"We can use the school garden to get some photographs," he said.
The others agreed.
Elliot looked up by chance.
Two Time was already looking at it.
They looked away again almost immediately.
The teacher continued explaining the project.
For the rest of the class, the four of them divided up the tasks, but Elliot and Two Time didn't exchange a single word.
Their eyes only met occasionally.
During recess, Elliot went out to the playground and sat under one of the cherry trees.
From afar he saw Two Time walking near the pond.
Two Time saw it too.
They looked at each other again.
This time, neither of them immediately looked away.
