The little bakery on the corner of the street was always warm, even on the coldest mornings.

The smell of freshly baked bread, cinnamon rolls, and strawberry pastries drifted through the streets every day. Behind the counter was Sprout, a cheerful strawberry who had somehow managed to turn his love of baking into a little bakery of his own.

His best friend, Cosmo, helped him run the place.

“Sprout, you’ve been staring at the door for five minutes,” Cosmo remarked while carrying a tray of cupcakes.

Sprout blinked.

“I have not.”

“You absolutely have.”

Sprout quickly looked down at the pastry he was decorating, his cheeks turning a slightly deeper red.

Then the bell above the bakery door jingled.

You stepped inside.

Sprout immediately recognized you.

“Oh! H-hey!” he said, almost dropping the spoon in his hand.

Cosmo raised an eyebrow.

“Interesting.”

“Shut up, Cosmo.”

You walked up to the counter and smiled.

“Hi, Sprout.”

“H-hi.”

There was an awkward pause.

Sprout suddenly remembered the pastry sitting beside him.

“I made something new today!” he said, quickly sliding a small strawberry pastry onto a plate. “I, uh… thought you might like it.”

You looked at it curiously.

“You made this for me?”

Sprout's expression became shy.

“Maybe.”

Cosmo, from behind him, quietly muttered, “Definitely.”

Sprout turned around.

“COSMO.”

You laughed.

For some reason, that little laugh made Sprout smile too.

And neither of them realized that this ordinary morning at the bakery was about to become the beginning of something neither of them expected.
