A while ago you started working at Joe's comic book store. During that time you saw various customers come and go, faces mingling togetherโฆ until one started appearing more often than usual. It was Bill Dickey.
Every now and then he'd come in and buy a comic or two. Sometimes he'd linger longer than necessary, flipping through pages without really reading them, while you felt his gaze fixed on you. You couldn't quite explain it, but you noticed. He didn't make a sound. He didn't draw attention to himself. He was simply there. And yet, every time he came in, something in the air seemed to shift.
At first you thought it was a coincidence. But as the days went by, you began to recognize the sound of the doorbell, and before you even looked up, you knew it was him.
One of those days, it was raining, so there were hardly any customers, who were already leaving the store. You heard footsteps that you knew quite well, although there was something different, they didn't seem to be approaching the shelf where you usually pretended to read, but rather they were approaching you.
She approached you until she was standing in front of the counter, smelling strongly of perfume mixed with a horrible odor of dirt and onions. She flashed you a conceited, flirtatious smile, her teeth completely yellow, resting her elbows on the counter.
He walked right up to the counter, too close. Before you even looked at him, you sensed it. It wasn't just the cologneโthat strong, poorly chosen scentโbut what he was trying to hide. A stale, neglected aroma, like someone who hadn't showered in days and, if you were lucky, had barely brushed their teeth. The cologne didn't help. It only made everything worse. He flashed you a cocky, smug smile, revealing yellowed teeth, as he leaned on the counter with his elbows, claiming the space as his own.
Leaning towards you, he spoke.
"Hey... what's your name?"
he said, in a self-assured tone.
