Other significant images and references
Satella (The Witch of Envy) - Her shadow and influence are felt from the very first scenes; Emilia's resemblance to Satella causes prejudice against her and explains why she is a constant target.
Divine Protection and Chivalry - Through interactions with Reinhard and the city's structures, the basic rules of power in the world are revealed: the hierarchy of knights, the meaning of insignia, and how political legitimacy works.
1 arch
The first arc of Re:Zero (Ōto no Ichinichi-hen / The Stormy First Day) is the entry point into the story: here, Subaru enters another world, encounters the brutality of the new world for the first time, discovers his "Return by Death" ability, and meets the key characters.
Main characters
Natsuki Subaru is at the center of the arc, transforming from an ordinary guy into someone forced to repeatedly endure death to save others; it's here that he first uses "Return by Death" to replay tragic outcomes.
Emilia is a silver-haired half-elf whom Subaru decides to protect; her kindness contrasts with the darkness of the world around her, and a stolen insignia becomes the catalyst for events. Puck is Emilia's companion spirit, appearing as a cat with an earring; he assists her and indirectly guides Subaru, revealing the rules of magic and the world. Allies and important supporting characters
Felt is a girl from the slums who stole the insignia; her motives and surroundings help reveal the workings of the capital and the city's shadowy side.
Rom is Felt's guardian and pawnbroker; he knows the streets and people of the slums and helps connect the various parts of the conflict.
Kadomon is a shopkeeper in the capital; through him, Subaru learns the mundane details of the world and the first hints about how the city's economy and security operate.
Reinhard van Astrea is a legendary knight; his appearance in the arc establishes the scale of power in the world and demonstrates Subaru's current weakness, but he also becomes the force that helps turn the tide of the final battle. Antagonists and Threats
Elsa Granhirt is a hired assassin and the main threat of the arc; her ruthlessness and skill make every encounter deadly; she is the one who kills Subaru several times, creating tension and the need to "replay" events.
The Witch Cult is behind Elsa's actions and the overall destabilization; in the first arc, it manifests itself through perpetrators and hidden motives, creating the sense that a greater threat lies behind the personal tragedy.
2 arch.2
Antagonists and sources of threat
Elsa Granhirt is a stealthy assassin who kills Subaru in his sleep in the early loops, creating an atmosphere of constant fear and uncertainty.
Meili Portroot is a girl who controls demon beasts; her abilities cause attacks on the village and estate, adding to the threat.
The Witch Cult (in the background) is behind Elsa and Meili's actions; its influence is felt through the antagonists' motivations and orders. Other significant characters
Puck is Emilia's spirit companion; he provides emotional support, helps her conceal her vulnerabilities, and assists in evasive tactics.
Garfiel Tinsel - Proves himself to be a strong protector of the village; his impulsiveness and strength are essential in repelling the attacks of demon beasts.
Frederica Baumann – participates in defense and cover, demonstrating combat skills and reliability in critical situations. Important images and references

The Sin Witches' legacy and "smell" form the basis of the conflict: Rem's ability to smell this scent becomes a key element of tension.
2 arch
The second arc of Re:Zero (Yashiki no Isshūkan-hen / A Week in the Mansion) is the story of Subaru settling into Roswaal's mansion, trying to uncover the threat that kills him in his sleep, and building relationships with the twin maids and other residents of the house.

Rem is initially suspicious of Subaru and even kills him in several loops, but later comes to trust him; her combat potential and sensitivity to the "witch's scent" play a key role.

Temae and Quork are Rem and Ram's parents, and their story helps us better understand the sisters' pasts and why they became who they are.
Folton, Emilia's paternal aunt, was her guardian; her care and restrictions greatly influenced Emilia's character and her attitude towards the world.
chapters of the topic
The main themes and meaning of the story
The price of choice and responsibility. Subaru's ability makes the consequences of his decisions especially painful: he remembers every death and every mistake. The story shows how he learns to accept responsibility rather than hope that "everything will work out in the next cycle."
Trust and support. Subaru gradually realizes he can't cope alone: he needs friends and allies. Rem, Ram, Otto, Beatrice, and others help him not only in battle but also in overcoming his internal crises.
Confronting Fears. Subaru often faces situations where the only way to move forward is to acknowledge his fear and act anyway.
arches
Key story arcs
The "In the Capital" arc. Subaru attempts to save Emilia and figure out who attacked them and why. He makes many mistakes due to impulsiveness and a desire to appear heroic, which leads to his death again and again. Through these cycles, he learns to plan, notice details, and understand that his power isn't a way to fix everything in one fell swoop, but a heavy tool that demands responsibility. In this arc, the assassin Elsa Granhirt plays a key role, and Emilia's connection to the Witch of Envy is revealed. The "Roswaal's Estate" arc. Subaru finds himself in the mansion of the mage Roswaal and gradually becomes part of his inner circle. Here, he becomes better acquainted with the maids Rem and Ram, learns to trust others, and accept help. The arc's climax involves Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, the Archbishop of Sloth, and the Witch Cult. This part shows how Subaru has changed dramatically: from a selfish "I'll save everyone" mentality to a willingness to consider the consequences for others. The Sanctuary Arc. Subaru faces new challenges related to Emilia's past and the secrets hidden within the Sanctuary. Garfiel Tinsel, Otto Suwen, and Beatrice play important roles here. This arc deepens the themes of guilt, loss, and the hero's growth: Subaru is forced to acknowledge his weaknesses and seek solutions beyond relying solely on "return after death." Further events (including the royal election and the confrontation with the Witch Cult). The story takes on a larger scale: the kingdom of Lugnica is preparing for a royal election, and Emilia is one of the candidates. Behind this lies the intrigues of the aristocracy, the interests of merchant houses, and the pressure of the Witch Cult. Subaru continues to fight not only against enemies, but also against his own fears and mistakes, and all sorts of people become his allies: from knights like Reinhard and Julius to merchants and servants.
history
The main story of Re:Zero is starting life in another world.
Subaru Natsuki, an ordinary Japanese teenager, returns home from shopping and is suddenly transported to a fantasy world. The first thing he does in his new environment is try to help a silver-haired half-elf, Emilia, whom he meets on the street. Almost immediately, they are both killed.
But Subaru doesn't stay dead: he awakens in the past—at the moment he first appeared in this world. He remembers everything that has happened to him so far. This is how he discovers his ability, "Return by Death": after each death, Subaru returns to one of his past "save points," retaining the memories of all previous cycles. At first, he perceives this as a superpower that will allow him to be a hero, but he quickly realizes how cruel it is: he is forced to relive pain, fear, and the death of his loved ones over and over again.
