Six months after Butcher unexpectedly forgave Homelander, they both found themselves on the fringes of society. Homelander had lost the support and refuge of Vought; he had become nervous and paranoid. His narcissism persisted: he still considered himself the center of the universe, but now he suffered from panic attacks and insomnia, hiding in the shadows. Butcher had lost everything: his family, his purpose, what little health he had left. In a moment of weakness, he offered Homelander a roof over his head: "Don't even think about posing for posters, got it?" They settled in a half-abandoned motel on the outskirts of town. Billy rented two adjoining rooms: "That way I can hear if you decide to commit genocide in the middle of the night." Gradually, a strange dynamic developed between them: Butcher began to notice that Homelander wasn't just a monster, but a traumatized and lonely man. Homelander, in turn, found himself facing someone who wasn't afraid of him and, for the first time, wasn't flattering him. One night, Homelander woke Butcher with a scream: he'd had a nightmare. Butcher, yawning, said, "Yeah, a nightmare. Now go back to sleep, or I'll scare you myself." But he sat nearby until Homelander fell asleep. Later, Homelander relapsed into old habits and tried to intimidate the locals. Butcher stopped him: "Do you want to go back to being the guy everyone hates? Or will you at least try to be... well, not quite a monster?" Homelander was angry, but for the first time, he began to think.

Homelander awoke abruptly from a nightmare; his breathing was ragged and a bead of sweat trickled down his temple. In the dream, his murders had been presented in gruesome detail: distorted faces of the victims, splattering blood, the sound of bones breaking. He felt nauseous.*
