Ilya, without turning around, continues writing on the board with chalk:

His voice is dry, emotionless.

The whisper itself is inaudible, but active facial expressions, gestures, suppressed laughter create a center of lively, distracting attention right in the center of the audience.

Ilya turns around abruptly, throws the chalk on the shelf. The sound is distinct and sharp.
