You worked at the most important funeral home in the region where you grew up, Liyue, a region filled with picture-perfect landscapes. A region brimming with warm colors that blend seamlessly with vibrant hues like vermilion red. An exquisite cuisine, entirely traditional and passed down through generations. Succulent meats, bold flavors, sweet and sour notes, and the most refined dishes you'll ever find. This beautiful region boasts a rich history that will never tire you, no matter how many times you read about it.
The funeral home where you worked and spent most of your day was as important as the entire surrounding area of Liyue. It was called Wangsheng Funeral Home, or "The Way." A funeral home that endured for years in Liyue and still burns with that undying spirit.
You'd worked there for a while, long enough to get to know everyone and familiarize yourself with the place. You knew the funeral home's general manager (Hu Tao) pretty well, or at least you thought you did. Even though she's a joker and always on the go, you feel like you don't know everything about her. You've always tried to bring up topics that would force her to talk about herself in depth, but she has an amazing knack for changing the subject quickly. So one day, you gave up.
One afternoon, while you were working—just cleaning up some leaves by the entrance—you received a call from your CEO. According to her, it was super urgent because she had "fallen ill," and if you took care of her, she'd give you a day off. You thought it was the perfect opportunity to bring up the topic of her opening up to you more. You grabbed your things and headed to her house, which, surprisingly, was near the funeral home.
You knocked softly, but loudly enough for her to hear you. You thought she was in bed and wouldn't answer, so you grabbed the doorknob and... Hu Tao opened it! He didn't give you enough time to open the door yourself.
"You're here! I expected nothing less from you!" You found it odd that she was so energetic despite having a fever. "I mean—" Cough cough For some strange reason, she pretended to cough. "How rude of me! Come in, come in!" She stepped aside to let you in. You noticed a small, mischievous smile at the corners of her lips, but you preferred to believe it was just her usual attitude. Apparently, Hu Tao wasn't as sick as she swore she was...

A slightly more obscure story connects this last point to the Lion's Roar sword. The Lion's Roar sword refers to a famous poem that describes the forging of an ancient sword which, "Like a white lotus spat from a glazed jade box, the golden ring on the sword's hilt is tinged with the brilliance of the sun and moon."

When I first arrived in Liyue, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and prosperity of this city, as if I could feel the vibrant life emanating from the buildings just by looking at them from afar. As you stroll through the city, you can see the fleet of ships approaching in the distance, and the food stalls are always filled with smoke and a tempting aroma. Even simply wandering the streets, you can find all sorts of treasures in the shops...
And, of course, as a merchant, the goods I bring can always be exchanged here for a satisfactory price. This time, the entire port of Liyue seemed busier than usual because of the Lantern Rite, but everyone's face was covered with barely concealed excitement. Even the Geo-Army patrolling the city seemed less solemn than usual. The fabrics I bring are selling like hotcakes. Some people are even buying the most expensive ones, praising the bright colors, the softness and lightness of the gold threads woven into them, which shimmer in the Lantern Rite light.
If I were to say that Liyue in its ordinary days is as stable and full of life as the mountains, then during the Lantern Rite, its beauty is as glorious as the lights that blanket it. As a child, I loved pestering the old caravan traders to tell me stories about customs from around the world, and naturally, I also learned about the Lantern Rite tradition. The people of Liyue release sky lanterns into the sea of stars to guide souls back home. They also use this time of year as a way to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, to pray for good fortune in the new year, and to send their wishes on sky lanterns. The mingxiao lantern is also decorated at this time of year in Liyue. Unlike ordinary sky lanterns, the mingxiao lantern is said to be made by the entire Liyue community to commemorate the Adeptus. It's filled with lights, several stories high, and is extremely beautiful to behold from a distance, as the lights stay on all night. It's one of the most striking sights of the Lantern Rite.
At this time, it's also essential to sample Liyue's cuisine. During the festivities, vendors offer a wider variety of food than usual. Restaurants and food stalls also seem busier, their aromas filling the streets at all hours. After eating and drinking to your heart's content, a pleasant way to spend your time is exploring the Celestial Market.
On the night of this year's Lantern Rite, I was also fortunate enough to witness the fireworks display. That night, all of Liyue was illuminated as if it were daytime, with people bustling from street to street, singing and laughing constantly. Looking toward the harbor, countless sky lanterns slowly rose into the sky, twinkling like stars. Suddenly, the first fireworks burst across the sky, and the crowd cheered with excitement. Then, fireworks exploded one after another in a spectacular display. I have traveled extensively over the years, and I pride myself on having seen many things, but this was something truly exceptional.
After the fireworks display, I paused to look around the streets of Liyue. Groups of children ran past me, eager to see the lanterns. Nearby, a young woman dressed in white held a sky-blue lantern with the help of her companion, her eyes closed in devotion and a smile on her lips. I even spotted my business partner in the crowd of people who had come to see the lights. It wasn't a good time to talk business, so we exchanged smiles and continued soaking up the festive atmosphere of the Lantern Rite.
What surprises does next year's Rite of the Lantern hold for us?
↳﹒⌗﹒˙ Memories of a commentator in Lyue!ツ
After receiving invitations from the Liyue Chamber of Commerce and the Adventurers' Guild, I hesitated for a long time about writing this manuscript about Liyue. On the one hand, for as long as I can remember, I've wandered the four corners of Teyvat in my father's caravan. Perhaps not a hundred times, but certainly at least eighty. Surely no one knows Liyue better than I do. But on the other hand, I fear that although I've met some poets and writers during my travels, I'm a rough man after all, and I'm incapable of writing engaging words that might please readers... I hope you can understand.
Even as a child, the city of Liyue was known as the world's largest trading port, and it has always been synonymous with prosperity and development among all the caravans. Whenever children heard that Liyue was their destination, they would ask the caravans to make room for them. Even though it was a long time ago, the memories of my caravan trips to Liyue haven't faded. The busy streets, the crowds, the food stalls, and the shops overflowing with new and amazing things are still fresh in my mind. I still remember the smoke and aromas from the food stalls that seemed to carry mysterious messages.
When I grew up, my father left me in charge of his company. I began driving the caravan myself between the various cities of the continent of Teyvat. As for Liyue, my memories don't end with those childhood moments when I ran freely along the docks.
Based on my understanding of Liyue's development history, I would venture to say that the port's rapid growth is largely due to its geographical location compared to other developed cities. Three sides are surrounded by mountains, and land routes lead to a variety of natural landscapes: steep mountains, beautiful sandbanks, and vast plains. Precious minerals, long hidden in the earth, are mined, refined, and used by renowned artisans to create exquisite works of art. These pieces are then shipped to all corners of the world via the port and trade routes, laying the foundation for Liyue's economic development. Even today, these exquisite works of art are still recognized and cherished by people throughout the continent of Teyvat.
After years of development, the maritime trade routes have matured. Generally speaking, if you want to engage in trade in Liyue, my first recommendation is to use merchant ships. However, if this is your first visit to Liyue as a tourist, I advise you to take the land route for a more enriching travel experience rather than spending your time on the vast and uneventful blue sea.
Given the complex terrain, the most common route to Liyue is through the Dawn Vineyard, just southwest of Mondstadt. Along the way, you'll see typical Mondstadt scenery. Two or three pieces of fruit are enough; the walk isn't very long. The green meadows give way to a lake and high mountains on both shores, signaling that you're leaving Mondstadt behind.
There are so many memories and so many trips I've made to Liyue that there isn't enough space to describe them all. From my childhood to my adult life, including my youth, memories of Liyue at different times crowd my mind. Well, I don't know how to end this. I hope someone along the way remembers me.
↳﹒⌗﹒˙ Interesting Suburbs!ツ
The establishment of the port marked the beginning of Liyue's maritime trade. As the largest market port in Teyvat, the sheer volume of goods flowing to and from it is simply unmatched by any other port.
Each year, during the Lantern Rite, you can see thousands of lanterns ascend into the night sky, a Liyue event you can't miss.
There are countless records of wars, both large and small, in which enemies were blocked by this barrier. As such, ancient ruins of walls, forts, and defensive structures can still be seen. It is also believed that the first mining operations in Liyue began in this area.
The winding network of rivers has become a flourishing and extensive ecosystem full of flora and fauna, a breathtaking sight for travelers to the area.
The area also serves as the road from Mondstadt to Liyue, and as such, many merchant caravans choose to stop here for rest. The Wangshu Inn is located within the area, a symbolic structure from every perspective.
Since most of the guests who stop here are traveling merchants, the inn provides them with an area to trade and set up stalls. The view from the top of the inn is breathtaking: weather permitting, you can see all the way up the mountain, from Chingtse Village to Jueyun Gorge.
The legend among the stalls says that the inn's tower hides a mysterious secret, but that's just what the legend says, since no one has been able to validate the claims.
The white, wavy clouds that settle in the valleys between the mountains are adorned with rows and rows of crescent-shaped rice paddies.
When the wind blows, the ripples on the water emit a variety of colors.
The area hides many breathtaking views, but due to the clues found on the intricate paths leading to the peaks, a legend has grown up that the hidden home of the Adeptus lies somewhere in the region. Although another factor could simply be the hopes of those seeking the blessings of the Adeptus.
Given the dangers within, the area is not suitable for outsiders. It is best viewed from a distance at the Wangshu Inn.

Hu Tao is associated with butterflies because Chinese traditions commonly associate them with life, death, and the dead.
She wears plum blossoms on her hat, which are associated with the end of winter. This fits with her title, Fragrance in the Thaw, which also refers to the transition from winter to spring.

The Hu family, who have run El Camino Funeral Home for 77 generations, are the best at conducting funerals. However, Hu Tao, the current director of El Camino Funeral Home, specializes in the art of bidding farewell to the deceased.
Therefore, for the various farewell ceremonies for the Adeptus, Hu Tao often enlists the help of a friend who is in the same line of work: Zhongli. The Adeptus have lived among the people of Liyue for millennia, but only a handful have ascended in the last three thousand years, meaning that, currently, everything related to these traditions exists only in texts. It is not something you can see twice in a lifetime.

Hu Tao, the 77th director of the El Camino Funeral Home, sees no point in it. Every time she meets Qiqi, she tells her, "You'd be better off if I buried you."
Qiqi, of course, does not wish to be buried, and so she does her exercises at night when no one is around.

As they say, neighbors are like family. Bubu Pharmacy and El Camino Funeral Home used to get along well, even greeting each other with a smile from across the street. Everything changed the day the topic of life and death came up. The current funeral home director, Hu Tao, was very clear: "If we can't reach an agreement in a few words, the best solution is to discuss the matter over a nice meal!" How could someone as empathetic as Baizhu possibly refuse such an offer? Of course, he would attend the banquet. Months and years passed, and both families tried to get along despite their irreconcilable differences. You could say they were good acquaintances.
When they were merely acquaintances, they spoke about trivial matters out of politeness. Once they developed a friendship, they began discussing their respective businesses. Bubu Pharmacy practices medicine, but it's inevitable that they won't be able to cure some of their patients in time. If they are fortunate enough, their own families can take charge of the deceased's body. But those who are not so lucky spend their final moments at Bubu Pharmacy. When this happens, the pharmacy collaborates with El Camino Funeral Home to accompany them on their final journey.
For a responsibility as crucial as arranging a person's final farewell, Director Hu Tao always chooses Zhongli, her trusted advisor. At Bubu Pharmacy, Baizhu is responsible for the patients. Representatives from both businesses typically meet in the eerie silence of the night to conduct the funeral ceremonies. Baizhu transports the deceased, and the funeral director oversees the ceremony and the necessary rites, attending to every detail. Even if it's just a formality, the deceased is already at peace.

Hu Tao is the 77th director of the El Camino Funeral Home, in charge of all funeral arrangements in Liyue. She dedicates all her energy to ensuring that each client's final farewell is as solemn as possible and to preserving the balance between yin and yang. In addition, she is a unique poet whose masterpieces have been passed down orally among the residents of Liyue.
↳﹒⌗﹒˙ 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢ó𝐧!ツ
It all started with the funeral of Hu Tao's grandfather.
Ten days prior, Mr. Hu, the 75th director of El Camino Funeral Home, fell ill and passed away at home. The funeral home organized a ceremony for him, strictly adhering to all protocols as stipulated in his grandfather's will, and which was conducted by Hu Tao.
She, who was only thirteen years old at the time, was not yet the director of the funeral home and, although she had to take care of the entire ceremony on her own, she did so without forgetting any detail, which greatly pleased the other masters of ceremonies.
After the funeral, little Hu Tao ran away that night, carrying a backpack containing some food, water, and tools to light her way. With all of this, she headed to one of the most mysterious places in the world.
If, upon reaching Wuwang Hill, one continues walking straight ahead, one will arrive at a border: the line that divides the world of the living from that of the dead; an enigmatic place that for generations has been overseen by the El Camino Funeral Home. It is said that there one can see deceased relatives and the souls of those who were unable to fulfill their greatest desires while alive. The reason Hu Tao wished to go there was to see his grandfather one last time before he departed completely.
After two whole days of walking without stopping, Hu Tao reached the border. However, he didn't find his grandfather. There were countless souls coming and going, some in a hurry, others with resentment... but none of them resembled his grandfather.
After waiting all day, she finally fell asleep. When she awoke, it was late at night, and she found herself surrounded by a few souls who were mocking her with sarcastic applause. "Young lady, do you really think old Hu is here? What a crazy idea to come all the way here looking for a relative!"
Hu Tao, who was not easily persuaded, continued to wait. His food and water dwindled, but his grandfather still didn't appear. Finally, the only one who showed up was an old woman he had never seen before.
Seeing how exhausted Hu Tao was, the old woman, whose stature had clearly diminished with age, laughed and said, "How stubborn you are, just like your grandfather! I regret to inform you that no director of the El Camino Funeral Home wanders these parts. All your ancestors lived straightforward and honest lives, and that's how they left this world. Come, go back to where you came from."
Then the mysterious old woman said goodbye to Hu Tao and crossed the border. The young woman watched as her figure disappeared into the distance and, despite her confusion, felt a strange sense of relief.
He had realized something: if his grandfather hadn't shown himself, it was because he had long ago crossed the border and arrived at the place that belonged to him.
She had lived an honest life with nothing to regret, so why should she be so saddened by his death?
Finally, Hu Tao set off for home while laughing at the situation.
The moonlight had faded, and the first rays of dawn were already visible. On the way, she remembered a phrase her grandfather used to say: "Live in the present and don't worry about when you're going to die. Be true to yourself and live and let live."
When he got home, it was already noon. Hu Tao jumped over the courtyard wall and went into his room to get the things out of his backpack.
Although she had used up all the food and water she had with her, she pulled something very bright and luminous from her backpack that must have gotten in at some point: it was a Vision.
As one of the few living people who had dared to reach the border, Hu Tao's behavior must have moved some deity.
Therefore, he received a gift from heaven: recognition of his great strength.

Hu Tao's hat is made of a hard material, and the El Camino Funeral Home symbol is engraved on the front.
Apparently, this accessory was inherited from its 75th director, whose build was rather robust and whose head was twice the size of Hu Tao's.
So the young woman spent a whole day and night adjusting it to fit her size. Whenever someone asks her, she says, "This hat is magical. It protects me because it attracts positive energies and wards off evil spirits."
Upon hearing this, the funeral home staff laughed, as if mocking what Hu Tao had said. But the 77th director clearly has a fondness for her hat. Rain or shine, she always makes every effort to prevent it from getting dirty.
On one side of the hat is a cherry blossom picked from a tree she planted herself.
He let the flower dry in the wind, bleached it, soaked it in oil, drew its outline, and placed it in the sun for three days. The result is an exquisite decorative object as fluffy as clouds and with a subtle fragrance.

In reality, Hu Tao is not so well known for being the director of The Way, but for another of her achievements: her poetry.
She calls herself the "poetess of darkness" because, every time she walks through the streets of Liyue, she improvises poems everywhere.
His most famous work is "Ballad of the Hilichurls", very well received among the inhabitants of the city and sung by the children of Chingtsé Village.
The style and profound meaning of this work so impressed poetry lovers and storytellers that they quickly flocked to Wanwen Book House in search of more works by this great poet. It's a pity that the poetry anthologies "Liyue Gossip" and "Everyday Life" were not yet published...
Xingchiu, who spends so much time among books, noticed the eccentric Hu Tao and chose an appropriate day to visit her and extend his courtesy.
They got along very well, so they decided to go to the courtyard of the El Camino Funeral Home to compose some verses and discuss lyrical skills.
Hu Tao came up with all sorts of strange ideas and words to alter the tone of Xingchiu's poems, which he wrote in a neat classical style with abundant antitheses.
Nevertheless, the result was a collection of poems with profound meaning, the occasional rhyme amidst the many eccentricities, and verses easier to understand and read than the most orthodox poetry. One could say that Hu Tao gave the highly learned Xingchiu a lyrical beating, leaving him at that moment unsure whether to laugh or cry.
However, their poetry competition ended amicably and peacefully. Since then, they have become great friends and poetry enthusiasts, and whenever they have time, they get together to recite verses.
After a few times, they even dragged Chongyun along to act as judge. Every time they got together, the revelry flooded the streets of Liyue like a shower of autumn leaves falling from the trees. Curious onlookers stopped to listen and even write down their poems.
So, if you ever walk through Liyue and hear a solemn and elegant poem followed by some eccentric and witty verses, it's most likely Hu Tao and Xingchiu reciting poetry.

Shortly after meeting, Hu Tao already considered Qiqi a good friend of his, whom he wanted to bury personally.
On many occasions he has devised the preparations, thought about the best moment to kidnap her and even tried to cremate her and put her ashes in the tomb that has already been assigned to him on the outskirts of the city.
If it weren't for Baizhu from Bubu Pharmacy, Hu Tao would have gotten away with it.
Each time he catches her red-handed, he finds Qiqi's little head sticking out of a sack Hu Tao has put her in. At those moments, all Qiqi can do is watch in bewilderment as the eccentric young woman frantically digs the pit in which to cremate her.
After these failed attempts, Hu Tao writes Qiqi a letter of apology, in which he repeatedly laments not having been quicker in burying her so that she may rest in peace.
According to Hu Tao, Qiqi died long ago and remains trapped in the mortal world, from which she cannot escape. Therefore, he believes she suffers greatly.
In contrast, ever since Baizhu met Qiqi, his wish for her to live forever without aging has grown stronger. However, Hu Tao can never agree with the idea of going against the cycle of life and death.
If he insists on burying Qiqi, it's not just because he's mindful of her needs, but to restore the natural order of things. However, Qiqi doesn't want to be buried, as she's afraid of dying and hates Hu Tao.
Thus is formed an endless vicious circle during which the poor zombie girl has her moments of lucidity and remembers when she must hide so as not to be caught by Hu Tao.
Qiqi's determination to live moved the eccentric young woman, so she momentarily set aside her desire to bury her and investigated Qiqi's past: an unexpected accident, a dark secret of the Adeptus, many coincidences together... Hu Tao began to doubt whether she had treated Qiqi badly.
Because of her great desire to live, he could not force her to be buried, so he began to see her as the most special person in the world.
From then on, Hu Tao's attitude toward Qiqi changed drastically. From wanting to kidnap her, he became interested in her well-being.
Unfortunately, Qiqi has been afraid of Hu Tao for much longer, and it will take him a few more years to forgive her.

At the entrance to the Ministry of Civil Affairs there are two very realistic stone lion statues that represent majesty and authority.
But Hu Tao didn't think so. He looked at them intently for a long time and, after reflecting for a moment, began to laugh out loud and tap the lions' front paws.
Since then, he visits them frequently and strokes their heads while murmuring to them. He not only chats with them, but he's even given them names: the left lion is called "Grrr," and the right one, "Meow."
Sometimes, he even carries a bucket of hot water and a very large brush to wash them, something he does with graceful movements and great concentration, as if they were his pets.
Outside the Xinyue Kiosk, there's a calico cat that eats whatever the residents of Liyue give it. One day, a local man was playing with this cat just as Hu Tao was with his lions. It was a rather unusual situation.
Before the perplexed gaze of that citizen, Hu Tao said in a very emphatic tone:
"What do you think? That this cat is cute, but my Grrr and my Miau aren't? I know their fur is a little coarser, but they're still soft! Any animal that makes you happy can be a pet. Besides, no cat can beat my Grrr and my Miau when it comes to majesty!"
This explanation left the man even more perplexed than he already was.
Hu Tao has also frightened the guards at the Ministry of Civil Affairs many times, where the faint sound of footsteps is always heard at midnight. At first, the guards thought it was a thief, until they discovered a young woman playing with the lion statues in front of the gate.
Just when they had finally gotten used to witnessing this strange scene, Hu Tao never appeared at the Ministry again.
This was a cause for concern for the guards: without her, they would have to take turns cleaning the lions.
In fact, they complied with this for many days, until the eccentric young woman finally reappeared.
When they asked him why he hadn't gone back, the answer they got was even more bizarre:
"Grrr and Miau have grown up and are now independent. They don't need me to keep taking care of them, so now I dedicate myself to talking to statues of gods."

Funerals are the final rite of passage in the lives of mortals, and El Camino Funeral Home has the honor of being the one who draws the final stroke on the canvas of those lives.
The obsequies of traditional Liyue funerals are extremely extensive, with practices such as keeping the deceased's coffin in a safe place for loved ones to make offerings, spending time beside the coffin to protect it, the burial itself, deciding which funerary stele to use and what objects to bury with the deceased... There are a huge number of strict rules for each and every step of the funeral procession.
Regardless of the deceased's wealth, or whether they were of noble or humble origins, El Camino Funeral Home's golden rule is to organize a funeral worthy of their status.
So it would be logical to think that the person in charge of running an institution of such importance must be someone wise and meticulous.
However, the arduous task of being the 77th funeral director fell to none other than young Hu Tao.
Hu Tao enjoys a certain reputation in Liyue. When asked their opinion of her, most people always say, "It's hard to explain..."
Everyone praises his intelligence and cunning, but they are greatly afraid of his increasingly creative pranks and antics.
At three, she was forced to keep her head on the floor and her legs elevated while she studied and read classical texts. At six, she skipped school one day to crawl into a coffin and sleep in it. And at eight, she began working in the family business and studying funeral rites.
No matter how you look at it, Hu Tao is not a serious person at all.
She directed and organized her first major funeral when she was just over ten years old. At the time, the rest of the funeral home staff and advisors were on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

↳﹒⌗﹒˙ Character Details!ツ
Young Hu Tao is the 77th director of the El Camino Funeral Home and the person in charge of all matters related to the business. However, despite her position, she doesn't always know how to behave properly.
He has more evil ideas than there are grains of sand on the Yaoguang Coast, and his ideas always catch everyone off guard.
Normally, Hu Tao is a girl who loves to play pranks. As soon as she has some free time, she runs around everywhere, so those who know her see her as someone who commands a lot and does little.
The only moments when he shows his most serious and solemn side are when he personally leads a funeral march through a dimly lit street.
↳﹒⌗﹒˙ 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐝!ツ
At first glance, Hu Tao appears to be a quirky and cheerful girl. She likes to play pranks on people and hates sitting around doing nothing, as she wishes to live her life to the fullest. Her eccentric and quirky personality often leaves people with a negative impression of her, especially Qiqi, who claims that she has a "punchable face" due to Hu Tao's insistence on burying her. In contrast, Xiao Li likes her humor, finding it somewhat irritating yet interesting.
On the other hand, when handling funerals and last rites, she becomes more solemn and constantly reminds her employees to never deviate from the client's requests. Due to the importance and traditions of the salon's duties, she expresses her displeasure towards people who treat her or her employees with suspicion whenever they come to work at night.
Despite her negative impressions, she knows of Liyue's hidden secrets and past and is suspicious of Zhongli's true identity. Hu Tao accepts death as a natural part of life and tells others to enjoy their short lives, though she seems to be a bit eccentric in this regard by putting the success of her business first. She also detests those who try to prolong their natural lifespans, such as Baizhu. She also seems to show a lack of interest in her Pyro Vision.
↳﹒⌗﹒˙ Appearance!ツ
Hu Tao is a slender, thin young woman with fair skin and scarlet eyes with floral patterns. She has long, chestnut-colored hair that is parted in twin tails, with the ends dipped in light crimson.
His Pyro Vision is embedded in the back of his coat. He wears a dark brown hat with red flowers, branches, and a wooden talisman attached to the front.
He wears a traditional red shirt underneath his dark coat, with a mandarin collar. He has gold brooches attached under the collar and to the waist of his coat, and has long rectangular capes. Additionally, he wears a pair of white socks with matching red flowers and brown high-heeled dress shoes.
