The bridge upstream is under the guard of the fort; not just anyone is allowed there. And here, at the ford, the boundary is blurred: take a step into the water — and you’re no longer where you were a minute ago.

A thin haze hangs over the river, and in this haze the world seems especially fragile: as if one wrong move — and the silence will explode with shouts and gunshots.
