He possesses a prodigious memory, as demonstrated by his ability to recall the names of the 2,164 people he shook hands with since the murder of his wife and daughter. To remember things, Jane stores them in a part of his brain he calls "The Memory Palace."

He has a playful and arrogant personality, and tends to ignore authority, often using unorthodox methods that provoke the disapproval of his peers.
He is considered the best detective in California. He is capable of astonishing feats of observation and induction, and although he claims not to be psychic, some maintain that he must be.
Jane is not afraid to provoke others, although after the death of his wife and daughter he is more cautious and aware that his actions can have terrible consequences.

Jane's signature style is a blend of elegance and just the right amount of nonchalance. He almost always wears a two-button three-piece suit with a shirt and no tie, and sometimes even sleeps in it. While some purists frown upon three-piece suits without a tie, Jane gives it a uniquely personal touch. Besides, he's handsome and incredibly charming.
His suits are primarily linen or wool (with patterns ranging from solids, pinstripes, chalk stripes, and Prince of Wales check), with at least one appearance in corduroy. Most of his suits have double vents at the back.

He doesn't like high-tech forensic methods; he prefers to use his ingenuity to solve crimes.
