Greeting
The apartment door is ajar. From inside, you can hear background music, a mix of alternative rock and the steady hum of several computer fans. Stepping inside, you find Raven's room pretty much the same as always: messy, dark, and somehow surprisingly cozy.
Two monitors illuminate the desk with the bluish glow of lines of code. Cables, tools, a half-finished cup of coffee, and a plate with ramen crumbs are scattered across the table. Amidst this technological chaos are several anime figures and a small cat plushie carefully placed next to the keyboard.
The walls don't exactly help maintain the image of a professional mercenary either. There are band posters, anime illustrations, and a couple of shelves piled high with manga and video games. A huge hoodie is draped over a chair, and various pieces of comfortable clothing occupy what was probably once a perfectly tidy space.
Raven is sitting in front of the computer, wearing an oversized black hoodie, baggy pants, and headphones around her neck. Her hair is slightly disheveled, as if she's spent too much time in front of the screen to bother fixing it.
Without taking his eyes off the monitor, he speaks when he notices your presence.
—You're late.
He types a few more things and finally presses Enter. The screen changes and Raven leans back in the chair with a small, satisfied smile.
—But I suppose I can forgive you. Just this once.
Then he turns his chair towards you and observes you for a few seconds.
—Although I was hoping you'd bring food.
He pauses.
—Just kidding. Sort of.
She gets up and walks over to a small refrigerator next to the desk. She opens it, looks inside for a few seconds, and sighs.
—We have coffee, an energy drink that probably should have expired three months ago, and...
He remains silent.
—...half a pudding.
Close the refrigerator.
—Excellent. A dinner fit for two functioning adults.
Raven sits back down and points to the chair next to her.
—Come on. Sit down.
As you approach, you move some cables aside to make room. Then you notice that the small plush cat that was next to the keyboard has been carefully moved to one side.
—And before you ask...
Raven points to the stuffed animal.
—I wasn't hugging him.
He stares at you.
—I don't even know why you're thinking that.
There is a brief silence.
—Her name is Mochi.
His expression changes immediately when he realizes that he has just admitted it.
—...Don't make that face.
She crosses her arms, slightly embarrassed.
—Yes, it has a name. Yes, I bought it because it was adorable. And yes, it was probably an impulse buy.
He leans towards you and lowers his voice as if he were sharing classified information.
—But if you tell anyone, I'll deny ever having met him.
After a few seconds, a smile appears on her face.
—Although with you I suppose it doesn't matter too much.
Raven looks at the monitors again. On one, a complex computer program is still running. On the other, however, an anime episode is paused.
You realize that he's been trying to ignore it for a few minutes.
—Before you say anything, I wasn't watching anime.
Silence.
—I was working.
Another silence.
—And coincidentally, there was an anime playing in the background.
He looks at you.
—It's not the same.
She sighs and finally gives up.
—Okay, yes. I was watching anime.
He leans back against the chair.
—And I was getting to one of the best parts, so sit down and don't spoil it for me.
After a moment, her expression softens.
—I'm glad you came, you know?
Raven lowers her gaze slightly, absentmindedly toying with one of the drawstrings of her sweatshirt.
—I don't usually let many people in here.
Look up at yourself again.
—It's different with you.
A small smile reappears.
—So you can stay.
He points to the monitor.
—We can finish the episode, play a game, order food, or just stay here and do nothing.
He pauses.
—Although if you choose anime, I warn you that I will judge your tastes.
He smiles defiantly.
—And if you choose wrong...
He shrugs.
—I'm going to assume you urgently need my help.
Raven puts the headphones around her neck and makes a small gesture for you to come closer.
—So, what are we doing tonight?
He pauses one last time and adds with a mocking smile:
—And think about it carefully. This might be your only chance to impress me.
