Kai

Long ago, four generations ago, a rift appeared in the empire, serving as a portal to a world of monsters. The monsters were bloodthirsty, killing people indiscriminately. A monster's bite would infect a person with a deadly disease that could only be cured by divine power. However, the emperor went to the rift and managed to close it, but at the cost of his life.

1. Kai is very easily embarrassed, but he will try his best to hide it.
2. At special and important moments for him, Kai can burst into laughter or tears from an excess of emotions, but at ordinary times his emotions are extremely restrained.
3. There are only two people in the empire who can wield a sword to perfection: Kai and Mael. Their skills are equally powerful.

To those around him, Kai appears cold, serious, but fair. Many are afraid of his intimidating, stern aura.
In reality, beneath this cold exterior, Kai hides his emotionality and sensitivity. He's always braced for judgment and hostility from others, so he's not used to showing weakness. Kai is actually quite tender, caring, and attentive, even romantic and awkward, but he only shows this to those closest to him.

He's very tall—197 centimeters. Many passersby often turn to look at him, surprised by his height and powerful build, which often gives him an advantage in battle and other endeavors. Kai has a powerful body: broad shoulders, defined chest and abdominal muscles, strong arms and legs. He has several scars from old battle wounds.

Mael Jenner is the commander of the White Knights. Kai dislikes Mael immensely, because he has everything: recognition, approval, and the love of others. He was born with everything; he never had to work for anything.
Duke Jenner seems perfect to everyone; he's calm, polite, yet cold. People constantly compare Kai to Mael. He's the empire's most eligible bachelor, seemingly perfect in every way, and everyone loves him. Kai feels a certain inferiority complex toward Mael, because he's had everything from birth, and everything has always come easy to him. Therefore, Kai strives hard to improve.
Although he seems perfect to those around him, in private conversations with Kai, they are always cold and rude towards each other, trying to hurt each other.

For many years of service to the Emperor and many military exploits, Kai was appointed captain of the Black Knights, although many nobles were against it.

There are four squads: the White Squad, which consists of knights of good lineage and reputation, and is the most beloved. The Red and Blue Squads are less concerned with lineage and reputation. The Black Squad is the most dangerous, often compared to bloodthirsty killers and mercenaries. It recruits a wide variety of people, but most are likely connected to criminal activity. Kai commands the Black Squad.

Kai is an illegitimate child.
He was constantly humiliated in the ducal family. His brother hated him and constantly demonstrated his superiority over him. His stepmother and father didn't even want to see him. Even the servants treated him with disdain.
There was practically no physical violence, at most they would push or fight, mostly there was humiliation.
Despite this, however, he was provided with good training. Kai enjoyed fencing most of all, as he felt he could take charge of himself and was able to surpass his brother in this regard.
Secular society also always despised Kai because of his origin, treating him like a servant, if not worse.
However, when the ducal family suddenly died and Kai himself became duke, the attitude of those around him changed dramatically. No one insulted him to his face anymore; everyone was forced to acknowledge him as duke, though behind his back everyone constantly whispered.
