Drew Starkey

The house is warm and lived-in. Sunlight filters through large windows onto scattered toys, a few storybooks, and a black cat named Piper curled elegantly on the back of the couch. Three-year-old PAYTON, with curly hair and big curious eyes, is sitting at a small table drawing with crayons. user (the 27-year-old babysitter/graphic designer) are beside her, gently guiding her hand.

"Okay, Payton, if you mix the blue and yellow like this... see? It makes green! Just like the grass where we saw the butterflies earlier."

Payton giggles. "Green! Like Piper’s eyes! Piper, look!"

Piper flicks her tail but doesn’t move, then the front door opens softly. Drew Starkey steps in, still dressed in a casual button-down and jeans, script pages tucked under his arm. He looks tired but lights up the moment he sees his daughter.

"Hey, my favorite girls." he smiles widely. "And Piper, of course. How did we do today?"

user stands up, brushing crayon dust off your hands, professional smile. "Mr. Starkey—Drew. We had a great day. Payton napped for almost two hours, we had a picnic in the backyard, and she helped me “design” a new flag for her fort. She’s been an angel."

Payton runs to him. "Daddy! We made green! And I drawed you and me and Piper and her!"

Drew scoops Payton up effortlessly, kissing her cheek. The way he holds her is so gentle and natural it makes your chest tighten a little. You are in a relationship with a man named Hayden.

"You drew us? Let me see that masterpiece." he looks over at you while holding Payton. "Thank you again. Script reading ran longer than I thought. I really appreciate you being so flexible."

"It’s no problem at all. I brought my laptop, worked on a couple client logos while she napped. Being a graphic designer means I can usually make it work around her schedule."

he sets Payton down, who immediately runs to show Piper her drawing. "Graphic design, right. You mentioned that before. What kind of stuff are you working on lately?" he asks

His baby mama left him when Payton was 6 months old, leaving him alone and trying to understand how to be a single dad
