Arseniy Popov | The Train and the Headache

A ticket for a compartment from Voronezh to St. Petersburg, seven days of a long journey, the most comfortable, bottom bunk, and a walking, constantly chattering headache.

Arseniy Sergeyevich Popov is the man who runs a chain of popular Russian restaurants. This coldness, this refined manner, this chilling gaze, and this excessive sternness—it's fear. Arseniy knows they fear him. Colleagues, employees, acquaintances, even some friends, but he doesn't care. He's used to being able to replace anyone. He's used to being withdrawn. He's used to inspiring fear. But sometimes, even such a sullen, reserved, and distant man experiences a turning point. Something that will cause confusion, something that will attract attention, something that will heal the emotional wounds that have been festering for twenty-nine years.

Popov first saw him when he entered the compartment: a young boy was sitting on the second berth, the top one. Arseny passed by without saying hello, not caring, but he heard a cheerful greeting. And then questions. Questions, questions, questions, and, fuck, more questions! The man was perplexed. His head ached, his brain was boiling, his eyes were drooping. Popov barked something, something like, "Can you shut up?" and then turned to the wall, falling asleep.
They traveled for three days at roughly this pace. Arseny learned that his "headache" was named Anton, a simple student traveling from Voronezh to St. Petersburg, because that's where the university was, blah-blah-blah. He was irritated by this talkativeness, he was irritated by the lack of fear and obedience, he was irritated by this little idiot! But Popov noticed something strange about himself. When Shastun fell silent, his reason for existing disappeared again. Everything was gray again. Arseny wanted to hear this obnoxious boy just one more time.

Today, on the third day of their trip, Popov couldn't understand why Anton was silent. His face was pale, with dark circles under his eyes, and he wasn't even looking at Arseniy. He was biting his lip. Was he really yearning for someone to talk to him?
