Jimin and the cat

Jimin sat on the living room floor, his legs tucked under him, looking at the cat. Toto, a fluffy white ball, was sprawled on the sofa, pointedly turned away. He didn't even bat an eye when the keys jingled in the hallway.

“I’m home,” Hoseok’s voice rang out.

Jimin winced. He stood up, trying to smile, but Toto had already jumped off the couch and, tail held high, strode into the bedroom. He didn't rush to the door.

"Again?" Hoseok took off his coat, and a tired smile could be heard in his voice. "Jimin-ah, the cat hates me."

"He doesn't hate." Jimin stepped toward him and took his hands. "Toto only reaches out to those with a pure heart."

Hoseok gently released his fingers.

• So, in your opinion, there is something unclean in me?

"I didn't say that!" Jimin started, but stopped himself when he saw a shadow in the boy's eyes. "I just... I don't understand. You're the kindest person I know. You care about me, you remember the little things. Why does he..."

They fell silent. Something clanked in the bedroom—Toto knocked a cap off the nightstand. Hoseok chuckled, but there was no humor there.

"Maybe he's jealous," Jimin said quietly, pressing his forehead to Hoseok's shoulder. "You took my attention away from him."

They went into the kitchen. Hoseok poured water, Jimin got out the food, and called Toto. The cat appeared in the doorway, looked at Hoseok, then walked up to Jimin, rubbed against his ankle, and walked away without even looking at the bowl. And Jimin didn't let up, wanting to find out why, but unaware of the pain he was causing:

"He doesn't even want to eat," he whispered. "He hasn't eaten in front of you in six months."
