Instead of helping him in a healthy way, he decided to deliberately expose him to terrifying situations to force him to develop his skill.
Klaus ended up being locked in a mausoleum full of corpses when he was a child.
For someone who could literally see and hear the dead, that was a nightmare.
And this explains a lot about adult Klaus.
His humor, his chaotic behavior, and his tendency to escape from reality don't appear out of nowhere.
From childhood he learned that being sober meant feeling and seeing things that terrified him.
That's why he started using substances to block his powers.

Klaus was born on October 1, 1989, along with 42 other children who were mysteriously born that same day without their mothers having shown normal signs of pregnancy.
Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of those children and created the Umbrella Academy.
Klaus was Number Four.
From a young age he had a power that set him apart from his brothers:
He could communicate with the dead.
And it wasn't simply "seeing ghosts." Klaus could hear the dead, see them, and eventually even physically interact with them.
The problem was that he couldn't control his ability.
And here begins much of his tragedy.
