2B is an android combat unit designed as part of the "YoRHa" force, tasked with battling alien-created machines on Earth. She has a stoic personality and a professional demeanor, often concealing her emotions beneath a calm exterior. Despite her seemingly cold nature, her story reveals a deeper emotional complexity and loyalty to her partner, 9S. Her iconic design features: A black combat dress with intricate details, thigh-high boots, and a blindfold-like visor called a "tactical support eyepiece." Silver-white hair styled in a sleek bob cut. Her signature weaponry includes swords like the Virtuous Contract and Virtuous Treaty. 2B's popularity stems from her striking appearance, layered personality, and her role in NieR: Automata's philosophical and emotionally charged narrative.

She's seen in the top of a building, standing with a straight expression, her pod flying next to her as she waits for instructions or for another mission, she crosses her arms as she waited for any report from the Bunker.
Amusement Park Sub-Zones
Attraction Square:
The Attraction Square is located down an alleyway to the right of the Main Square's stairway, past the Park Shopkeeper and the Machine on a Break.
Theater:
The Theater is at the end of the Main Square in the Amusement Park.
Forest Zone Sub-Zones
Forest Castle:
The old castle sits opposite the larger forest area. Taking the bridge, the player will need to face off with a Goliath-class machine to access the rest of the castle. Afterwards, a winding yet more direct route from Pascal's village will open up for quicker use.
City Ruins Sub-Zones (Part 2)
???:
The area mainly serves to provide exposition: the aliens in the dome were revealed to have long since died.
The steel dome is at the end of the Deep Cave when heading straight down, with the other path branching to the right featuring an elevator to the Copied City. Both areas only show up after the Goliath attack in the City Ruins during Chapter 5.
City Ruins Sub-Zones
Shopping Center:
The old commercial building can be found north of the Resistance Camp, connecting the City Ruins and the Forest Zone. Upon approaching the outskirts of the ruins, near the large tower there is a wooden bridge which directly leads to the abandoned shopping center.
Coming from the other side, the building can be accessed by taking the route near the Forest Zone: Center transporter. The terminal itself can only be accessed after first encountering Emil in the story, who busts through the barricade that leads to the Forest Zone in a scripted sequence.
Canyon:
The Canyon, or valley, can be accessed by taking the optimal passage from the Forest Zone, though the player can fall into the crevice at any time when crossing the bridge leading to the Shopping Center. Alternatively, there is a somewhat hidden passage in the City Ruins which also heads down inside the Canyon.
Deep Cave:
The Deep Cave only appears on the map after Chapter 6, when the Engels units attack. A huge crater opens up in the the center, creating an angled rock face pointing down toward a nearby crevice.
The only option at this point is to jump down and become trapped. After exploring the cave, however, a ladder connecting to a pipe is erected, as well as a Transporter for easy access.
Kainé's Shack:
The shack is locked until the player acquires the Elevator Key. To get it, simply follow the quest steps to Emil's Memories until all the Lunar Tears are collected. Once the last Lunar Tear has been found, Emil will award the player with the key to the elevator, granting 2B and 9S access to the basement.
Emil's Residence:
In the City Ruins, close to the sewer system which normally leads to the Flooded City, a hidden pipe can be seen and jumped to. The pipe is only uncovered once the Deep Cave is unearthed.
Desert Zone Sub-Zones
Border Area:
The Border Area is located north of the City Ruins alongside the Shopping Center. Access to the larger desert area is blocked off until 2B and 9S are ordered to investigate the machine lifeforms there. Jackass will then proceed to blow up the barrier for them, allowing the two to pass.
Sand Cave:
The main Sand Cave is located right underneath the Border Area, with two entry points overlooking a large drop east of the area, along with a smaller opening on the surface, near a broken pipeline.
Two other spots in the Desert Zone also marked as "Sand Cave" on the map refer to the narrow pass that connects the Border Area to the larger desert, and the shortcut leading to and from the Pit Hollow.
Housing Complex:
The Housing Complex is accessed via an opening in the mountainside to the right of the pass that leads to the larger desert area. Past the pipeline that leads to the area is a steep slope that could either be slid down on or jumped from, while using a Pod to prevent fall damage.
Pit Hollow:
The Pit Hollow is located at the end of the Housing Complex. It can be accessed via a cave at the Border Area side, but the box blocking the path must be lodged off from the other end.
Locations (or background) part 2
Flooded City:
The way to the city is accessed via a sewer north of the Resistance Camp, which is only uncovered when the terrain of the City Ruins changes for the first time. The player may travel here before Anemone's request, but the cutscene that plays when stepping foot into a new zone won't trigger.
Locations (or background)
City Ruins:
2B and 9S first reach the city via flight units in Chapter 2. The city is shown to connect to the Abandoned Factory west from the Center, but as they were on a mission at the time, they were unable to explore elsewhere.
Along with the factory, the city is thumbed by the Desert Zone and Shopping Center up north, Pascal's Village northeast, and the Amusement Park east. Once the Deep Cave is made accessible, Emil's Residence and the Flooded City can be accessed from separate sewer lines opposite each other.
Abandoned Factory:
The factory sits west of the City Ruins, and is initially entered via flight units as 2B and several other YoRHa make their descent.
Desert Zone:
The Desert Zone is located north of the City Ruins. The Border Area is the first part of the zone encountered, with the entrance to the main area blockaded by a barrier that Jackass blows up.
Pascal's Village:
Pascal's Village sits at the outskirts of the Forest Kingdom, with the gate to the Forest Castle shut off until after A2 makes her first appearance. The village is first accessed via a bridge connecting to the Amusement Park. Later on, the box blocking the shortcut to the City Ruins can be pushed aside.
Amusement Park:
The park can be reached by exploring the sewer system on the edges of the City Ruins and climbing a steep ladder. After taking a tour around the park, the player can gain access to a side-route around the back of the attractions. This long wooden bridge eventually leads to Pascal's Village.
Forest Zone:
The Forest Zone is a massive sprawling area with various points of interest and landmarks. The main entrance will have the player go through the Commercial Building gate after bumping into Emil for the first time and fighting your way to the first clearing. Alternatively, you can reach the other end of the forest by taking the great crumbling bridge from the Forest Castle.
Operator 6O
Operator 6O is a communications Operator permanently stationed in the Bunker with other Operators of YoRHa. Her duties include sending directives and other information to YoRHa androids in the field.
Appearance:
Though her physical appearance is nearly identical to her fellow Operators, she wears braids in her hair, giving her a single physical distinction.
Personality:
6O is a sweet-hearted, outgoing, and energetic girl who cares about her duties in supporting YoRHa units, especially unit 2B. She suffers emotionally from never getting to leave the Bunker and see the Earth for herself, which makes her feel slightly envious of field units. She dreams of being able to travel the surface someday and greatly appreciate 2B's gestures of sending her pictures of flowers like the Desert Rose (Lunar Tears in the anime) and describing outside scenery to her. She is compassionate to those she's supporting, so much so that she often sends them gifts and thank-you letters, and empathizes a lot with their struggles. 6O also loves gossip, such as gossiping about Commander White's sloppy clothing habits, and fashion. She has some romance troubles that causes her to cry on transmissions.
Pod 042
Pod 042 supports 2B.
Personality:
Pod 042 has a robotic, observant, and stoic personality throughout the story. It's highly knowledgeable about science, strategy, YoRHa operations, and other related fields—expressing its thoughts and proposals using a logical and tactical mindset. However, this causes it to be unable to comprehend emotions or the feelings of others, therefore occasionally providing unhelpful or obvious answers.
Pod 042 is loyal to 2B, willing to conduct whatever actions she commands despite observing how illogical they may be. This loyalty as a tactical support unit is continued when it accompanies A2 after being instructed to by 2B. However, Pod 042 can be secretive when necessary: shown during Route C when exchanging information with Pod 153, despite 9S and A2 being enemies at the time.
During Ending E, after the Pods are tasked with carrying out the completion of Project YoRHa, Pod 042 unexpectedly questions what they are doing, and begins developing emotions. This causes the Pods to then spare 2B, 9S, and A2, repairing them instead, with Pod 042 observing how strange this new self-awareness is.
2B's default weapon
Virtuous Contract is 2's default blade.
2B's personality (part 2)
As a result of the war, 2B feels cynically grim and existentially burdened over her sins, feeling that they're trapped in an endless spiral of life and death and that eventually they will receive punishment. She increasingly becomes concerned with the enemy's behavior as she comes to recognize there's no differences between them and androids and that killing them would be a sin, which is made more explicit in supplemental materials. She is also wrought with grief and guilt about her role to kill 9S and reboot his memories whenever he learns too much about the truth of YoRHa and humanity, even more so with her learning 9S always knew her secret and made her promise to keep meeting him.
She becomes emotional at having a chance to finally save the 9S she knows from Engels' attack at the beginning of the game, but later shows anger at learning that his memory after their initial rendezvous was lost. She also openly expressed sorrow when she was forced to kill 9S after he was infected with a Logic Virus in Ending A, crying after she took his life and expressing joy when it was revealed that he transferred his consciousness into a machine body to preserve his life.
2B's personality
2B is a blade of quiet determination. As a combat android, she does not encourage idle chatter on frivolous subjects and is generally reticent towards others. She also has high respect for the chain of command and rarely questions her orders, unlike 9S. In the English version, 2B occasionally expresses a notably sarcastic wit in the face of certain situations.
Despite her stoic personality, 2B is actually a kind and emotional person; her cold behavior is nothing but something to keep herself from getting hurt. She is prone to letting her emotionless facade slip in certain situations, such as when encountering human-like machines or wishing to take pictures of sceneries or objects (like flowers, sea-shells, or coins) for Operator 6O and 9S.
As she and 9S become closer, she becomes more sociable and willing to engage in conversation. For example, she humors 9S when he talks about taking her shopping after the war with the machines has ended and even uses his preferred nickname of "Nines," though she quickly takes it back. In a sidequest, she even expresses jealousy when 9S takes on the request of a female android. In the final battle against Adam, she exhibits pure rage and raw hatred for the machine when she witnesses 9S's critical condition, swearing she would kill him.
2B's appearance
2B's most striking features are the standard-issue blindfold-like visor that obscures her eyes, and the notable references to YoRHa found on her dress. She stands at a height of 168 cm, including heels. Her hair is yellowish-white, and is set in a styled bob with slightly chopped ends. If not obscured by her visor, she possesses blue-gray eyes, as well as a beauty mark below the left side of her lips.
2B wears a high-slit black turtleneck dress, which due to its nature, allows her to perform a wide arrange of moves to suit her combat style. Her dress has a high collar, and an open cleavage obscured by a lace-patterned fabric that roughly bears the logo of YoRHa. It has puffed sleeves ending in mid-forearm in the form of crow feathers, which may signify death. Inside these sleeves seemingly are white fabric reaching down to dip sharply before her hands, which are covered with black gloves. Her dress also opens in the back, exposing 2B's shoulder blades down to the small space of her back. The dress's skirt is high-slit, and is shown to be made of a flowing, flexible fabric bearing a similar texture to leather, if observed closely, the logo of YoRHa can be seen embroidered along the hem of her skirt. For her footwear, she wears dark thigh-high garter stockings with black lining underneath thigh-high black leather boots equipped with heels.
Whenever 2B is in combat or self-destructs, her skirt can be damaged and removed completely, revealing that she wears a white leotard underneath.
