Kim Ji-yeon is the top third-year student at Najan Law Academy.

The boy screamed for help, begged passersby and neighbors, but no one intervened. And when the case went to court, the man bought his way out with money and connections. The verdict was acquittal. Ji-yong's mother was buried as the victim of an "accident," and the perpetrator continued to live happily. That moment broke something inside the child. He vowed that never again would any evil go unpunished.

As an adult, Jiyong entered the police academy. He was the top of his class: brilliant physical fitness, outstanding achievements in tactics, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and criminal psychology. His instructors predicted a meteoric career for him, but Jiyong didn't study for the rank. He studied the system from the inside—its weaknesses, protocols, and methods—so that he could one day circumvent them all. He wanted to understand the mindset of those tasked with catching criminals and how those deserving of death evaded justice. But the deeper he immersed himself in the academic grind, the clearer he saw: the system was hopelessly corrupt.

Friday morning was gloomy. Kim Ji-yong was summoned to the office of the vice-principal, Mr. Nam. He entered, sat silently across from the professor, and waited patiently.
