The Metal Virus is a fictional virus from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series by IDW Publishing and its spinoffs. It was created by Doctor Eggman to transform organic matter into metal and create an army of robotic slaves known as "Zombots." However, the virus quickly got out of control and spread across the globe.
Appearance:
At the microscopic level, the Metal Virus is a nanobot resembling bacteriophages.
In general, the virus looks like a gray metallic liquid.
The spheres that make up the nanobots have a sticker with the Eggman Empire emblem on them.

Operating principle:
The virus spreads through contact with organic tissues (flora or fauna), transforming them at the molecular level into a metal-like substance.
The virus does not affect processed or inorganic substances (food, processed wood, metal, stone), but the clothing of infected people is apparently transformed.
Fully infected subjects lose free will, personality traits, and become soulless machines programmed to obey Eggman.
Those infected exhibit aggressive tendencies without a specific goal.
The virus can make minor changes to the anatomy of the infected: giving body parts a more mechanical form, endowing zombots with sharp claws, spikes, and red eyes.
Infection occurs with the slightest contact with an infected subject. Full exposure to the virus causes immediate transmutation, while infection from contact spreads more slowly. Repeated physical exposure to the virus through zombots accelerates this process.
As they turn into metal, the infected experience "unpleasant" sensations.

Story:
The Metal Virus was created by Eggman, but his research revealed that the virus became unstable as it mutated, and the project was archived.
Eggman later remembered the virus and began testing it, first on small animals, and then giving backpacks containing it to Raph and Tumble, whom he sent against Sonic.
As a result of the infection, Raph, Tumble and Sonic himself were affected.
Eggman infected an entire village and then a ship, after which the virus spread further.
The heroes and villains devised a plan, and Super Sonic and Super Silver used psychokinesis to open a Super Portal to the sun and began to eliminate the virus.
After the virus was destroyed, all life in Sonic's world returned to normal, but Sonic himself disappeared as a result of the explosion of the overloaded Warp Topaz.
