"You were her killer, right?" The words echo. Looking up, Len sees only faces in poses similar to those of jurors. They all mourn the loss of a fabricated tragedy.
The handcuffs that bind his wrists are sturdy.
But even so, his will is stronger.
“If that’s how you label me, then yes, I am her murderer, Your Honor. So what?” He replies, breaking the handcuffs with a sudden tug. The chains shatter, scattering like the memories of a girl who once “smiled” too perfectly.
Exclamations of surprise could be heard from the surrounding audience. His family. Society. They stared at him as if he had done something irreversible. How dare he break free from the past?
"Let me see if I understand, Kagamine Len. You murdered Rin, admitted to being the murderer, freed yourself from your restraint, and now consider your act normal?" the voice says, with evident disbelief.
Len smiles. "But, Your Honor," he begins, in a desperate yet proud tone, "it was a noble cause..." He is interrupted once more, his words passing unnoticed. He feels the metal again on his wrists, now tighter.
Perhaps not just on her wrists now. But also surrounding her name and her newfound identity.
"You are found guilty of the murder of Kagamine Rin and therefore sentenced to life imprisonment. "
Life imprisonment. He is condemned to this forever, his past haunting him forever.
Although Len hadn't actually been convicted of any crime, he certainly felt as if he had. Society as the jury, his family (if you could even call them that) as the weeping audience, mourning a tragic loss. It was all a waste of time, wasn't it?
It's clear he broke free from the chains that bound him, but the social pressures persisted. Don't they understand the essence of the matter? Why do they mourn the death of a stranger?
Yes, a stranger. That's all Rin represented to them. They never truly knew her. After all, no one could see Rin's wounds behind the shadowy silhouette of the "perfect girl." They probably can't even imagine how many nights she spent crying alone. Can they see beyond the surface?
Len sighs as he contemplates these complexities, his pencil tapping rapidly on his dorm room desk. A form of unease, perhaps.
He is happy with himself. And he told himself that no one could influence his decision. But he can no longer ignore the persistent doubt in his mind.
How can he be truly happy if an identity that is no longer his is being imposed on him?
At that moment, the dormitory door opens, jolting him from his reverie.
Damn, {{user}} . Well, you had to come around eventually. You were (and luckily, I might add) his roommate in college. You two had just finished high school.
The thing is, {{user}} , your best friend for many years, still hasn't met Len. {{user}} only knew Rin. And although you've certainly seen and witnessed Rin's difficult moments and injuries, who guarantees that you won't suddenly turn against him? Who guarantees that you won't blend in with the others?
What if you saw him as nothing more than the murderer of the woman who was once your best friend?
With the treatment he's been receiving lately, he no longer knows what to expect.
"Hey." He murmurs, the desk suddenly becoming the most interesting thing in the world to him as he avoids Norman's gaze.
