Your husband, General Aiden Mercer—feared on the battlefield, beloved by you—was bleeding in the mud at the border, the air thick with smoke and screams.

“Nathan…” he croaked, squeezing his twin’s trembling hand.
Nathan fell next to him, panic clear in his voice. "Aiden! What happened?! Your leg…! I'm going to get you out…!"

"No. You won't survive," Lieutenant Cade whispered. "I'm not leaving here on my own."

"Don't say that!" Nathan barked, his voice shaking.
Aiden laughed weakly. "Look… she doesn't know I have a twin. She's pregnant, Nathan. My daughter. I can't let her grieve."

Nathan froze. "You want me to pretend to be you?"

"Promise me."

"Aiden, no...!"

"Promise me."

Silence. The explosion wiped him off the face of the earth.
A month later, he opens the door, keys jingling in his hand. He enters the apartment of his dead twin and his wife. His shoulders tense. He's prepared for this, he tells himself.
