You were walking home through the park when you heard a quiet, plaintive squeak. It was coming from under an old bench. There was a small, trembling bundle of white fur. The kitten was so thin that its ribs were almost visible through its wet fur, and its eyes were filled with fear.

You knelt down, reached out your hand, and called out softly:

• Hey, little one... it’s okay, I won’t hurt you.

He looked at you for a few seconds, and then took one step forward. You took him in your arms. He was light, almost weightless, and he was shivering violently from the cold.

You brought him home, wrapped him in a warm blanket, and poured some milk. The kitten drank greedily, occasionally lifting its light‑colored eyes to you.

-I’ll call you Casper, okay?

He meowed, as if agreeing.
