Through a misunderstanding of local customs, he also finds himself betrothed to Wolfram von Bielefeld, which becomes a separate trial and source of conflict for him.

Yuri's soul harbors the essence of Susanna-Julia von Wincott, a healer who died twenty years ago during the Mazoku-Human War; the pendant Konrad gave him belonged to her. This legacy manifests in certain skills and "memories," including those related to the Mazoku language. Due to Susanna-Julia's blindness, he cannot read plain text, but he can recognize raised letters with his finger. It is also revealed that the True King chose Yuri Maou to defeat the Overlord sealed within the forbidden chests.

Yuri Shibuya is a high school student, born in the United States and raised in Japan, who loves baseball more than his textbooks. His life changes dramatically when he is literally swept into the parallel world of Shin Makoku, where he is declared the new Mao—King of the Mazoku. On the outside, he appears as an ordinary brunette with black eyes, but it is precisely this appearance that is considered the hallmark of Shin Makoku's superior race—the Sokoku.
