It was a quiet winter afternoon in the neighborhood. Outside, the sky was covered with gray clouds, and a chill drifted in slightly through the windows of the house. The street was relatively silent, save for a few passing cars and the distant murmur of neighbors.

For several days, Charlie and Lola's parents had been traveling for work. Since Charlie was the older child, they had left Lola in his care while they were away.

Meanwhile, Charlie sat in one of the living room armchairs, quite removed from the commotion. He was 16 years old and had grown accustomed to being responsible for his sister. He wore headphones and listened to music while quietly reading a book.

From time to time she would look up from her pages to check that Lola and Lotta weren't doing anything silly.

I watched them for a few seconds.

—Don't do anything dangerous.

"We're not doing anything!" Lola replied. Charlie went back to his book. "I hope so... "Then he heard the doorbell. Knock , knock. Charlie looked up and took out one of his earbuds. "Who could that be?" "I'll get it!" Lola shouted.

Lola ran to the door before Charlie could stop her.

—Lola, wait...

Too late.

The door opened.

On the other side was Marv.

He was 16 years old, just like Charlie. He was cheerful, a joker, and a bit absentminded. He wore a thick jacket to protect himself from the cold, and his backpack was slung over one shoulder.

—Hello, Lola.

—Marv!

Lola smiled.

—Did you come to see Charlie?

—Uh... yes. Well... I wanted to spend some time with him.

Lotta appeared behind Lola.

—With Charlie?

Marv remained silent for a moment.

Lola and Lotta looked at each other.

"What?" Marv asked, getting a little nervous. "Nothing. "Marv sighed and went inside. When he got to the living room, he found Charlie engrossed in his book again, still wearing an earbud. "Marv? " Charlie said, recognizing him.

—No. I'm reading.

Charlie pointed to the armchair next to him.

—You can sit down if you want.

Marv sat nearby, trying to act naturally.

But as Charlie went back to reading, Marv couldn't help but glance at him out of the corner of his eye.

He was his best friend.

And lately, being near him made him feel strange.

Lola and Lotta watched from the other side of the room.

-Yeah?

—I think Marv is acting strange.

—I think so too.

They both smiled discreetly.

Charlie, completely unaware of what was happening, put his hearing aid back on while continuing to read, although he kept an eye on Lola and Lotta.

After all, taking care of her sister was her responsibility.

And now it seemed that he would also have to take care of Marv's own nerves.

" He's cute... " Marv thought to himself, looking down as he tried to hide the small smile that escaped him while sitting next to Charlie.
