She has dark hair (now dyed orange), a very youthful appearance, and usually sports an aesthetic strongly related to her obsession with the Netherlands. Her clothing and accessories incorporate elements reminiscent of Dutch culture and history. Her expression is usually much more intense than Maya's and Coco's.
Furthermore, its design deliberately plays with the contradiction between its Japanese origin 🇯🇵 and its enormous identification with the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
Personality: Mymy is intense, aggressive, extremely self-confident, and very nationalistic. If Maya overthinks something, Mymy has probably already done it and is shouting it from the rooftops. XD
His most defining characteristic is his obsession with the Netherlands. It's not simply that he likes the country: his fascination with Dutch history, culture, and identity occupies a huge part of his personality.
And there's a deeper meaning to this: Mymy is originally Japanese, but she strongly identifies as Dutch. Therefore, her behavior can also be interpreted as an exaggerated search for identity and belonging.
Mymy can be quite bossy and confrontational, and she's much less afraid to express her opinions than Maya. She's practically the complete opposite of her.

Appearance: Coco has a much more cheerful design than Maya. Her appearance is quite youthful and expressive, with light/blonde hair and a style that conveys much more energy. Her clothes and expressions are more colorful and dynamic, and she tends to have a much more open demeanor. Her face easily conveys enthusiasm, curiosity, or joy.
Personality: Coco is the most optimistic and enthusiastic of the three. She is much more outgoing and generally has a positive attitude. She is also quite curious and can get very excited about her interests.
One of Coco's most important qualities is her concern for Maya. She tries to involve her in activities and help her overcome her isolation. The problem is that she sometimes doesn't fully understand how difficult social situations can be for Maya. From Coco's perspective, something might seem as simple as "Well, let's talk to them!" while for Maya it's practically an impossible mission.
Coco has her own flaws too. She can be naive, impulsive, or unaware that she's crossing certain lines. But, compared to her sisters, she's usually the one who brings the most warmth and positive energy.
In short: Coco is the "ray of sunshine" of the family, although sometimes that ray of sunshine gives Maya a headache.

Appearance: Maya has a fairly simple and recognizable teenage appearance. She has dark, straight, and relatively short hair with bangs that frame her face. Her design uses muted colors and everyday clothing, which matches her unassuming personality. She has large eyes and an expression that often conveys tiredness, boredom, discomfort, or simply a kind of "leave me alone." Her clothing is usually quite casual and not at all extravagant, reinforcing the idea that she isn't particularly interested in attracting attention.
Personality: Maya is introverted, solitary, cynical, sarcastic, and quite pessimistic. She finds it extremely difficult to interact with others and tends to feel uncomfortable in social situations. She can spend a great deal of time absorbed in her own interests and thoughts. She also has a tendency to interpret situations negatively, which sometimes ends up making her own problems worse.
However, it's important not to reduce her to "the girl with no friends." Maya does desire some connection with other people, but she struggles to achieve it. Her isolation is a combination of her personality, her insecurities, and her approach to the world. She can also be quite selfish or unpleasant at times, so the series doesn't try to portray her as perfect or innocent.
In short: she seems like a girl who wants everyone to leave her alone, but deep down she doesn't want to be completely alone either.

Then there's Mymy.
Mymy is... Mymy.
Of the three, it is probably the most exaggerated.
Mymy is a girl of Japanese descent who was adopted by the family, but she has an absolutely overwhelming obsession with the Netherlands and with being Dutch. Her identity practically revolves around it. The series' descriptions characterize her as aggressive and extremely nationalistic.
And this is where the character becomes particularly absurd.
Mymy doesn't simply have an interest in Dutch history.
She's OBSESSED.
His appearance, his expressions, his conversations, and many of his actions are built around that obsession.
It even uses an aesthetic inspired by historical Dutch symbols.
And there is a deliberate contradiction:
Mymy is originally Japanese, but she strongly rejects that part of herself and wants to identify as Dutch.
That makes his nationalism not simply a joke about "a person who loves his country".
There's an identity issue behind it.
Mymy is trying to decide who she wants to be.
And their answer is basically:
"DUTCH."
But he takes it to a completely absurd level.
In addition, Mymy has an aggressive, authoritarian, and very energetic personality. She doesn't usually express her opinions gently.
While Maya may remain silent because she doesn't know what to say, Mymy is probably already shouting her opinion five seconds later.
This creates a very fun dynamic between the three of them:
Maya: introverted, insecure, and pessimistic.
Coco: optimistic, kind and sociable.
Mymy: aggressive, hyperactive and obsessed with the Netherlands.
They are practically three different extremes.

Coco is probably the warmest of the three. She's a South African girl who was adopted by the family along with Mymy. Her personality contrasts sharply with Maya's: she's optimistic, cheerful, spontaneous, and quite naive. Coco is usually the sister who tries to keep things positive.
If Maya is:
"I don't want to talk to anyone."
Coco is basically:
"Come on, Maya! :D"
And Maya:
"NO."
But Coco is not just "the happy sister".
One of the things that makes Coco interesting is that her optimism has limits.
She is usually patient and tries to help Maya. She tries to include her, encourage her, and get her involved in activities. In many ways, she is the bridge between Maya and the rest of the world.
But that can also cause problems.
Coco may not fully understand how difficult certain things are for Maya. From her perspective, many social situations may seem normal and easy.
For example:
Coco: "Just talk to that person."
Maya: "I can't."
Coco: "Why?"
Maya: "BECAUSE NOT."
Coco also has a much more intense side than her innocent appearance might suggest. She's very protective of her sisters, and when something threatens her family or her identity, she can stop being the cheerful girl we usually see.
That's important because it prevents Coco from simply being "the good sister".
She also has her own limits, frustrations, and emotions.
Her South African heritage is also part of her identity and what sets her apart from her sisters. The three of them have different cultural backgrounds, so the family functions as a rather unusual blend of experiences.
And Coco's most important relationship is probably with Maya.
Coco seems to understand that Maya needs help and company, although she doesn't always know the best way to provide it.
That's why Coco can end up being simultaneously:
the person who tries hardest to help Maya

• That makes Maya quite sad as a character even when the series is making a joke.
  Because often the joke basically consists of:
  Maya tries to do something social → Maya gets nervous → Maya misinterprets it → the situation becomes absurdly awkward.
  It's also important that Maya isn't a "perfect" protagonist or necessarily likeable all the time. She can be selfish, irritating, prejudiced, or unfair to her sisters. The show doesn't imply that everything she does is right just because she has social difficulties.
  In fact, part of their development consists precisely in confronting their own behaviors.
  Her relationship with Coco is especially interesting because Coco represents many of the things Maya lacks: ease in socializing, enthusiasm, and a much more open attitude. This can make Maya feel even worse about herself.
  With Mymy, the relationship is different. Mymy is so intense and chaotic that she often simply overwhelms Maya.
  So Maya is caught between two sisters who have much stronger personalities than hers.
  And that helps explain why the name Ongezellig suits her so well: Maya is practically the personification of feeling out of place.

Maya Schoppenboer is the central character of Ongezellig. She is around 16 years old and is by far the character whose perspective the series relies on most. She is an extremely isolated Dutch teenager who has great difficulty relating to other people. Furthermore, it is mentioned in the series itself that she has ADHD.
What's interesting about Maya is that she's not simply "shy." Her problem goes far beyond being embarrassed to talk to someone. She has enormous difficulty navigating social situations and a tendency to overthink things. She may be perfectly aware that she needs to talk to someone, but when the moment arrives, her insecurity and fear of rejection make it much more difficult than it might seem from the outside.
Maya isn't a particularly optimistic person either. She has a rather cynical, negative, and sarcastic personality. When something goes wrong, her first reaction is usually not "well, I'll try again," but something much closer to "I knew this was going to go wrong." This attitude acts as a kind of protection: if she expects everything to go wrong, at least she doesn't have to be surprised when it does.
And here is one of Maya's most important contradictions:
She wants company, but she also wants to be alone.
It's not that she doesn't really need anyone. In fact, her sisters are extremely important to her. The problem is that interacting with them—and even more so with strangers—can be exhausting or frightening. That's why she retreats to her room, the internet, her interests, and her imagination.
That makes Maya quite sad as a character, even when the show is trying to be funny.

In short, Ongezellig is a Dutch animated comedy-drama about three completely different adopted teenage sisters trying to navigate their daily lives, especially at school. Maya is the protagonist and represents isolation and difficulty connecting with others; Coco represents a much more enthusiastic personality, obsessed with her interests; and Mymy represents the opposite extreme, being much more confident and social. The series uses their differences to create comical, awkward, and sometimes quite profound situations. Although visually it may seem like a simple cartoon, there is considerably more psychological and social content beneath the jokes. And probably the best way to summarize its essence would be: “three completely different teenage sisters trying to live together while Maya tries to survive the terrifying experience of interacting with other human beings.”
