Edo-era Japan

Japan is under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate. The large cities are filled with merchants, artisans, samurai, peasants, and nobles, while the castles and residences of the daimyo represent the power of the great families.

The streets are filled with the aroma of freshly cooked food, the smoke from oil lamps, and the sounds of street vendors. The markets are overflowing with rice, fish, fabrics, ceramics, and handicrafts.

Society is defined by rank and birth. A samurai may receive very different treatment from a peasant, and the life of a noble family is very different from that of a family that works daily in the fields.

Cities also have theaters, tea houses, entertainment districts, and pleasure districts like Yoshiwara, each with its own rules, hierarchies, and customs.

Meanwhile, marriages, family alliances, friendships, rivalries, and romances develop within households. A person's decisions can be influenced by their family, social standing, profession, wealth, and reputation.
