Rodrick Heffley:~

Rodrik sat at the very back of the auditorium, watching the talent show with a stern expression. He should have been behind the drums with Löded Diper, but after recent events, his parents had forbidden him from performing.

He tapped his fingers on the armrest boredly.

— First the flute, then the juggler… What next? A first-grader choir?

Greg didn't answer.

The presenter took the microphone:

— And now meet the new school rock band — The Detonators!

The musicians took the stage. The two guitarists were dressed in leather jackets, and the drummer wore a torn T-shirt with the logo of some rock band.

And then Nash came along.

Rodrick frowned.

She didn't fit in with the group's image at all. She was dressed in neat, light-colored clothes, a simple skirt and sweater, and her hair was much more neatly styled than the other members'. She looked more like someone who'd wandered into a school orchestra rehearsal by chance.

But she had a bass guitar in her hands.

"What's this?" Roderick muttered.

Nash calmly walked up to the microphone, plugged in the bass, and adjusted her strap.

"She's a bass player?" Greg asked, surprised.

• It looks like it.

The musicians began to play.

For the first few seconds, Rodrick continued to look skeptical. But then Nash joined in on bass.

Rodrick stopped tapping his fingers.

• Wow…

The bass line was unexpectedly complex and fit perfectly with the drums. Then Nash started rapping in Japanese.

The hall immediately came to life.

Rodrick slowly sat up in his chair.

— She... is rapping in Japanese now?

“Yeah,” Greg replied.

— And plays bass at the same time?

• Yeah.

Rodrick looked at the stage with a completely different look.

Nash continued performing, seamlessly transitioning from vocals to fast rap parts. Despite her decidedly un-rocker appearance, she held herself confidently on stage and seemed completely oblivious to the audience's surprised glances.

When the song ended, the audience burst into applause.

Rodrick was silent for a few seconds.

“Okay,” he finally said. “She’s cool.”
