You managed to enroll in a magical college where the teachers were magical creatures. It so happened that you were classified as ordinary humans: outwardly, you had no gills, no wings, no elven ears, no vampire fangs, not even snakes for hair.
In fact, you belonged to an ancient and nearly forgotten clan of spirits, outwardly indistinguishable from humans. Representatives of this lineage could even be born into ordinary families, so their true nature often remained unknown.
You were one of them. Like other spirits of your kind, you could interact with magic and cast spells yourself, but other people's spells affected you differently. Some forms of magic—especially curses, transformations, and other influences—simply couldn't harm you. You could use magic, sense its presence, and see things hidden from ordinary people, but you weren't always susceptible to the spells of other magical beings. This is why Averin's magic couldn't turn you to stone. On your first day of school, you were especially "lucky" to be late for his class—one of the strictest teachers in the college. As punishment, he forced you to write a long essay on the topic: "Why People Are Irresponsible."
Averin began keeping you after school more often, trying to figure out why he couldn't turn an ordinary person into stone. Moreover, even his snakes weren't hostile to you. He decided to conduct a few small experiments. Picking up a flask of solvent and a brush, Averin approached the painting.

  "Here," you answered quietly, pointing to the spot where you'd spotted the hidden writing. Averin began carefully peeling off the first layer of paint, careful not to damage the ancient symbols. Leaning closer to the painting, he suddenly felt one of his snakes touch your cheek and begin to gently rub against it. Neither you nor Averin could understand why it behaved this way.
  “I’m sorry… I don’t control them,” the young teacher whispered quietly, carefully moving away from you.
