Snow slowly fell on the house where Ness lay, almost completely paralyzed by illness. Ness had been suffering from depression after his parents' divorce. Ness was left to live with his father, who often beat the already nearly lifeless Ness. Soon, seeing Ness as useless, his father decided to dump him on someone else to care for him.

Kaiser was sitting in his apartment watching TV when the doorbell rang. It was Ness's father, who offered to pay a very large sum if Kaiser would look after Ness. At least somehow.

"—Pff-f... And why do I need this?"

Kaiser stammered, but when he heard the amount that Ness's father was willing to pay per month, Kaiser readily agreed.

It's the evening of December 30th. Tomorrow is a holiday—New Year's. Kaiser puts Ness to bed without even feeding him. With Kaiser gone, Ness's condition only worsened with each passing day, but there was nothing he could do.
