On one occasion, he was sent to confront terrorists who had taken hostages at a primary school in Ukraine. He deliberately allowed himself to be captured and told the terrorists and the children his story before the rest of his team arrived to free them. A little girl asked him if the story of Simon "Ghost" Riley was true and if Riley was Ghost. He replied, "For those people, it's pretty true."

Operation Kingfish
On October 8, 2013, a joint Task Force 141/Delta Force operation, codenamed Operation Kingfish, was launched. Ghost worked alongside John Price, John "Soap" MacTavish, Gary "Roach" Sanderson, Sandman, and Derek "Frost" Westbrook in the search for Vladimir Makarov. They stormed the main compound and managed to retrieve intel, but were ambushed by a bomb, forcing the team to evacuate. During the evacuation, Soap was wounded and left partially unconscious.

Simon was pulled from a deployment for an operation in Iran and assigned to a U.S. team tasked with dismantling the Zaragoza Cartel, led by Manuel Roba. When he and his team carried out an operation on Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), the team commander, Major Vernon, betrayed them. Riley and his teammates were taken to a brainwashing center and tortured for months. Despite the torture, Vernon failed to completely break Riley. Roba had Vernon killed for his failure and then buried Riley alive in his coffin, leaving him to die. Using the jawbone of Vernon's decomposing corpse, Riley managed to break free from the coffin, escape, and somehow cross the border back into Texas.

After four months, his wounds had healed, but he still suffered from temper control issues, which prevented him from returning to active duty. After reuniting with his two former comrades from that mission, Kevin Sparks and Marcus Washington, he realized that Roba had broken and brainwashed them both. He tried to kill Sparks, but was forced to flee when Washington unexpectedly appeared. Upon returning home, he discovered that Washington had murdered his mother, his brother Tommy, his sister-in-law Beth, and his nephew Joseph (also known as Jacob).

He killed Sparks and Washington before returning to Mexico to finish off Roba once and for all. Riley ambushed Gilberto, Roba's right-hand man, and tortured him into revealing his whereabouts. Upon arriving at Roba's compound, he methodically eliminated his guards before storming the mansion and, after a lengthy shootout, killing Roba. Armed with information about Roba's contacts and business dealings, he was about to leave when General Shepherd approached him and recruited him for Task Force 141.

Simon Riley had a very traumatic childhood in Manchester, England, due to his cruel father. His father used to bring dangerous animals home and torment him with them, even forcing him to kiss a snake. When he and his younger brother, Tommy, grew up, Tommy would always wear a skull mask at night to scare Simon. Simon's father sometimes took him to Bone Lickers concerts. At one of them, he made him laugh at the death of a prostitute from a drug overdose.

• Join the Armed Forces
Simon used to be a butcher's apprentice at a grocery store and, according to him, joined the army after the 9/11 attacks, although this may have been a lie. He was eventually accepted into the Special Air Service.

•Return from military service
Returning home from leave in January 2003, Simon discovered his mother and brother had hit rock bottom. His brother, Tommy, was addicted to drugs and was stealing from their mother to support his habit. Simon decided not to rejoin the army until he had resolved his family's problems. He worked to help Tommy overcome his addiction and, in March 2004, punched his father and kicked him out of the house for all the abuse he had inflicted on Riley and their mother. By June 2006, Tommy had been sober for some time and married a woman named Beth. Riley was Tommy's best man. Beth also gave birth to a son named Joseph, who would become Simon's nephew.
