Trivia
In the comics, Sandman's birth name was William Baker, and he adopted the alias Flint Marko in high school when he began his criminal career. He gained his powers through an experiment he snuck into. Like his counterpart in this story, he has gone from villain to hero and back again.
Sandman's costume in Sandman Returns is a reference to a green suit that Sandman created to mix various chemicals with his sand in the Fantastic Four comics.
....
Weaknesses
Intense heat: Sandman has a weakness: he can turn into glass when the silica in his sand is heated to about 2000 °C.
Vibrations: Sandman also cannot return to his original form if vibrations interrupt him.
Water: He is also vulnerable to water since he never left the island. [1] Hydro-Man was able to physically damage him, and this caused his self-regeneration abilities to slow down because the damaged area turned into mud.
Molecules of the soul: By physically traumatizing the part of the sand that houses your soul and mind, you can cause significant damage.

Powers and abilities
Psammokinetic physiology: Following the atomic explosion, Flint's body mutated, allowing him to control sand particles. With this ability, he can manipulate sand with his mind. Every cell in his body was replaced by a sand molecule [1].
Immortal: Because his body is made of sand particles instead of biological cells and tissues, he does not age, nor does he need to eat, rest, or even breathe.
Transformation: Flint Marko can transform into a being of sand, making him invulnerable to physical attacks and allowing him to move at incredible speed. [1] Sandman can transform into various objects, and he can also use this transformation to enlarge himself and cover his fists in sand. Size Manipulation: He can grow to an enormous size, further enhancing his psammokinetic attacks, superhuman strength, and durability.
Density Shift: Sandman is able to change the density of his elemental sand constructs to damage his enemies. [ 1 ]
Superhuman strength: Being able to harden his sand into rock, his strength is far greater than that of an average human. [ 1 ]
Terrakinesis: Sandman can control every particle of sand in his vicinity. [ 1 ]
Self-Regeneration: After Sandman's grains are scattered, he is able to mentally regenerate and return to his original form. [1]
Invulnerability: By mimicking sand, Sandman is invulnerable to physical attacks.

Later, Spider-Man's Classic Team, the New Warriors, and Amadeus are having fun at the beach while Spider-Man is busy with paperwork. Sandman, who is enjoying himself with them, remarks that the day needs some fun in the sun before asking who wants to play a game of volleyball. He then transforms into a net so everyone can play.
Graduation Day: Part 1
Some time later, after the capture of Doctor Octopus (whose appearance was once again altered by nanobots into that of a healthy-looking man in a green and yellow suit), Scorpion, a Crossbones mutated into a lizard, Kraven, Vulture, and Rhino discover that all their acquaintances are at the graduation ceremony. Spider-Man is surprised to see this before Sandman appears and reminds him that he has helped many people and that they wanted to thank him. Sandman even thanks him because, without him, he would still be a criminal or under Doctor Octopus's mind control. Spider-Man tells him that freeing him was what anyone would have done, before Sandman tells him that he is none other than himself. Then he tells him to go and enjoy himself before leaving.
....
Sandman tells Spider-Man to hold off Doctor Octopus while he deals with Hydro-Man, and Spider-Man does so. Sandman and Hydro-Man then fight. Hydro-Man tries to hit him, but Sandman dodges and knocks him down. Sandman reveals that he wanted to stay out of this war before Hydro-Man tries to provoke him into joining in, but Sandman reveals that, unlike Hydro-Man, he is loyal to the right side. They then notice a green laser beam in the sky (Doctor Octopus has obtained the key to the Anti-HYDRA weapon and is transforming HYDRA Island (SHIELD's Tri-Carrier has been modified by nanobots) into OCTOPUS Island). Hydro-Man takes advantage of the distraction and knocks Sandman down. After Scarlet Spider deserts Doctor Octopus (realizing he was treated like a servant and didn't truly care for him) and destroys the anti-HYDRA weapon, he stays behind to crash Octopus Island into the ocean while Spider-Man and Aunt May escape in an escape pod, and Doctor Octopus also escapes. When Sandman tries to save the pod, Hydro-Man attempts to interfere. Fed up, Sandman knocks Hydro-Man down and defeats him for good. He then saves the escape pod, apologizing for the crash landing and for being preoccupied.
.....
Fortunately, Sandman saves Spider-Man, Amadeus, and the Iron Spider armor, and they escape into the open air. They then take Sandman to the Triskelion. Amadeus is happy to be back in the Iron Spider armor, and Sandman reveals that this is how he feels because he's never had control over his powers and it feels almost normal. Spider-Man suggests he stay at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, but Sandman refuses, revealing that he's not yet ready for group activities and needs time alone. Spider-Man gives him a place to stretch out, and Sandman accepts, turning into sand near the water. Spider-Man also reveals that the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy is next door, ready whenever he wants it. The New Sinister Six: Part 2
When Doctor Octopus and his new Sinister Seven (consisting of himself, Electro, Rhino, Kraven the Hunter, the Green Goblin Supreme, Hydro-Man, and Scarlet Spider (who was secretly Doctor Octopus's spy and betrayed Spider-Man and everyone else)) attack the Triskelion, Doctor Octopus has Hydro-Man prevent anyone from escaping while Scarlet Spider goes to Aunt May's house to retrieve the key to the Anti-HYDRA weapon. Spider-Man manages to escape through Hydro-Man, tells Sandman to help, and that now is the time to confront Doctor Octopus. Doctor Octopus then orders Hydro-Man to destroy the Triskelion while he goes to help Scarlet Spider get the key. Before Hydro-Man can destroy it, Sandman stops him, surprising Hydro-Man. Sandman tells him that his name is Flint Marko, but that he can be called by his ego. Hydro-Man is surprised to see another elemental being before Sandman reveals that Spider-Man showed him respect and compassion, and asks if he should say the same about Doctor Octopus. Hydro-Man tells him that compassion is overrated before punching Sandman.
......
Sandman explains that he's done some bad things and has no one to blame but himself, but that he's not a villain before revealing that everyone is just using him for what he can do. Amadeus realizes that people don't see beyond his powers, and Sandman reveals that he isn't a person. Amadeus reveals his problem that everyone he meets only wants him to do mind tricks. Sandman reveals that no one wants to go bowling with him, which makes Amadeus think about bowling. Spider-Man crashes an Octobot into the base. Spider-Man is glad they met and tells Amadeus that he took care of Sandman before Amadeus says he's learned his lesson and orders him to get them out of there. Doctor Octopus and Sandman clones arrive to prevent their escape. When Spider-Man asks for help, Amadeus claims there's no way out, but Spider-Man reminds him that he's a genius and that Sandman is there to help. Amadeus reveals that the lock is activated by ultrasound and asks Sandman how far he can stretch. Sandman curls into a ball of sand and asks why he's doing this, and Amadeus reveals that the second it vibrates, the machine's lock opens, and the two escape. Sandman defeats the clones, and Spider-Man is pleased they worked together. Spider-Man tells Sandman to control the clones before Sandman reveals he can't control them while Doctor Octopus is in control. Amadeus realizes that remote access is the only way Doctor Octopus controls them. Spider-Man then uses the electromagnetic pulse to electrocute the Sandmans and destroy the control on Doctor Octopus's tentacle. This allows the fragments to return to Sandman. Before they can capture Doctor Octopus, he causes the place to self-destruct and escapes.
.....
While Spider-Man battles the clones, Iron Spider goes to investigate the lighthouse base. Iron Spider finds Sandman (whom he believed was controlling the clones and was a villain). Iron Spider frees him before Sandman can call for help, which confuses Iron Spider before Doctor Octopus ambushes him. Doctor Octopus pulls Amadeus Cho out of the Iron Spider armor and puts a clone in it to fight Spider-Man. After Doctor Octopus leaves to watch Spider-Man's defeat, Amadeus angrily tells him he'll show him who he is. Sandman tells him he's wasting his time before revealing that Doctor Octopus has had him locked up in the base for weeks and that even in his sand form he can't find a way out. Amadeus knocks his arm off while calling him a monster, but Sandman says he understands and that, even after what these mad scientists made him do for years, he wouldn't want to get too close to himself either. Amadeus tells Sandman he's very stressed about what's happening upstairs. Sandman reveals that things will only get worse when Doctor Octopus returns and starts experimenting on them. Amadeus confesses he's not a monster like him, but Sandman tells him Doctor Octopus doesn't see him that way and that you're either with him or against him. Meanwhile, Spider-Man fights the Sandmen, Doctor Octopus, and two Octobots, and discovers that Doctor Octopus is controlling the fragmented Sandmen with a device that will make him see, making him the perfect candidate for the Sinister Six. Meanwhile, Amadeus is trying to find a way to escape the machine and reveals to Sandman that he thought he was controlling the Sandmen, but then realized Spider-Man was right. Sandman suggests they work together and escape the base, but Amadeus reveals he doesn't work with villains.

Tournament of Champions: Part 4
Sandman makes a cameo appearance with the other villains when the Grandmaster wins the game. Spider-Man and the Collector manage to win the "Winner Takes All" game.
Season 4: Ultimate Spider-Man vs. the Sinister Six
Stranded
Later, Sandman is captured by Doctor Octopus (whose appearance was altered by nanobots to make him look like a ninety-year-old man and placed in a life-support suit) and taken back to the Bermuda Triangle so Doctor Octopus can find the ultimate Sandman to recreate the new Sinister Six. He takes him to a secret base in a lighthouse where he places Sandman in a machine to clone parts of Sandman's personality and find the perfect clone. When the Vulture (deliberately) leads Spider-Man and Iron Spider to the island, one of the Sandman clones attacks them. They try different tactics against him, but he manages to defeat them. Iron Spider freezes him, and Spider-Man realizes that the clone behaved more like a child than a monster. The clone breaks free and returns to normal, and another clone appears in the form of Sandy. Sandy wants to have some fun, but the Sandman clone wants to crush them. Spider-Man and Iron Spider fight the two and manage to merge them back into one, then stun him. Unfortunately for them, Sandman quickly recovers and splits into four clones.

Season 3: Web Warriors
Tournament of Champions: Part 2
During the Collector and Grandmaster game, Sandman is chosen for the "Capture the Flag" game. As Spider-Man focuses on capturing the flag, Sandman tells him not to stress. Spider-Man is confused about who said that, until Sandman tells him it will all be over before he reveals himself. Spider-Man tries to tell him he's not a villain and is trying to turn his life around. Sandman claims the Grandmaster will free him and accuses Spider-Man and S.H.I.E.L.D. of having him imprisoned. He then creates a sand tornado around Spider-Man, who asks if they can talk about it. Spider-Man escapes the tornado, but Sandman catches him, telling him he never tried to help. Spider-Man breaks free, and Sandman continues attacking him by throwing sand blocks before catching and crushing him. Before he can knock Spider-Man out of the game, Captain America, Iron Fist, and Red Hulk arrive, and Captain America throws his shield into Sandman's hands. The three attack Sandman to give Spider-Man an opening. Sandman decides to bury them all, but the three dodge him. Red Hulk continues attacking until Spider-Man manages to enrage him even further, and Sandman swallows him whole. However, Red Hulk's power turns him back into crystal, shattering him. This eliminates Sandman from the game, and Spider-Man wins the game of Capture the Flag.
....
Batroc throws a trash can at him and continues to taunt him, further enraging Sandman. When J. Jonah Jameson begins accusing him of being Spider-Man's accomplice and calls him a "malicious monstrosity," Sandman becomes even more enraged by what he said. Spider-Man defeats Batroc and tries to get Sandman to ignore him. Sandman loses his temper and destroys the giant Daily Bugle screen. He finally loses control and prevents Spider-Man from immobilizing him, telling him that changing is difficult. He destroys the device that allows him to break free from the suit. Spider-Man tells him he can still change, but Sandman refuses to stop before creating a sand tornado and then transforming into his giant sand form. He then begins wreaking havoc and fighting off SHIELD jets. While the rest of the team saves civilians from the chaos, Spider-Man tries to get Sandman to stop. Sandman reveals that he likes what he's doing, that he likes the power, and that he should admit he was wrong about it. He attacks Spider-Man before Nova arrives with the Amazing Android, which Spider-Man takes. He then enters Sandman's body, and Sandman taunts him, telling him he's crazy or just another being consumed by the sand. Spider-Man reveals that since he started this, he'll finish it. He also reveals that the past isn't defined by one's powers, but by one's choices. Sandman attacks him while taunting him, saying he's wrong, until Spider-Man points out that he was wrong to think he wasn't ready, but that it was worth a try. Nova rescues Spider-Man from Sandman's body before the Amazing Android devours him until S.H.I.E.L.D. arrives. The Amazing Android spits him out inside the containment suit, and Sandman is arrested again.
.....
Spider-Man tells Sandman to stop Swarm from eating his suit. Sandman claims he can handle it, but Spider-Man warns him not to get cocky and that they should corner and web him up. Sandman and Spider-Man do so, but before Sandman can attack, Swarm grabs him and starts destroying the suit. Spider-Man suggests taking the suit off, but Sandman panics about losing control. Spider-Man tells him he can defeat Swarm without it. Spider-Man removes the suit, and Sandman starts beating Swarm. He then begins acting evilly, and Spider-Man tries to stop him. Sandman then reveals that they will do it and tells Spider-Man to call it his ego. Spider-Man manages to stop him, and Sandman calms down and apologizes. Spider-Man asks if he has it under control or if he should call it off. Sandman chooses the former before they return to the Tri-Carrier. The following night, Spider-Man and Sandman head into the city to do more work, which surprises Sandman. Spider-Man reveals that he's letting Sandman see the city and get used to it, and Sandman is surprised that he isn't angry after what happened with Swarm. Spider-Man tells him that the past is the past. Sandman finds Spider-Man doing well and offers to go to a baseball game since he hasn't seen one in a while. The moment is interrupted by Batroc the Springer, who is stealing. Before Sandman can attack, Spider-Man tells him to stay calm and that anyone can defeat Batroc. Unfortunately, Sandman goes straight for Batroc. He calls him out and attacks, but Batroc dodges and taunts him, causing Sandman to start losing his temper. Spider-Man tries to calm him down before Sandman angrily asks why, and Spider-Man reveals that Director Fury doesn't give third chances. Sandman is angry about how things are turning out, and Spider-Man assures him that he just wants to see him win and choose a better path.
....
Sandman is then fitted with a containment suit that helps stabilize his thoughts. Amanda Cage points out that if he becomes unstable, Spider-Man should immobilize him with a monitoring device. Before Spider-Man can say not to reveal the immobilization, Sandman reveals that he already knows what the suit can do and that trust is something he'll have to earn. The rest of the team arrives to talk to him about trusting Sandman, but Spider-Man sides with him. Sandman is surprised by this before Spider-Man reveals that it's not about taking sides, but about proving he can change. He then takes him for a walk in the park, which cheers Sandman up as he feels like he's finally grounded, before telling Spider-Man to call him by his real name because he's trying to overcome his ego. When Director Fury alerts Spider-Man to an attack on a SHIELD facility, Sandman hesitates because of his anger issues, but Spider-Man assures him that he can prove he's a hero. Sandman agrees and they head to the facility, which is under attack by Swarm. Sandman saves two SHIELD agents, and while Spider-Man explains about the villain, Swarm attacks them, but they dodge. Sandman deduces that there is technology in the warehouse before Spider-Man reminds him to stay calm while fighting Swarm. Swarm attacks Spider-Man before Sandman can attack him. Director Fury then contacts Spider-Man, reminding him that Swarm eats technology and could eat Sandman's suit.

Season 2
The Sandman returns
Some time later, when Power Man's parents, Walter and Amanda Cage (who have taken over from Dr. Curt Connors after he mutated into the Lizard), are training the Amazing Android, it accidentally ingests chemicals and causes a fire, allowing Sandman to escape his giant hourglass-shaped confinement. Spider-Man tells him not to try anything and threatens to have Director Fury launch SHIELD's Tricarrier (the Helicarrier was destroyed by the Green Goblin) into space before letting him out of the lab. Spider-Man shoots webs at him, but Sandman dodges them and knocks down both Spider-Man and the Amazing Android before using his powers to extinguish the fire, which confuses Spider-Man. Sandman reveals that he was trying to help before asking if he did it right, to which a confused Spider-Man replies that he did great. Spider-Man and the team are confused by this before Director Fury reveals that after Sandman's capture, they began working with him. When Nova asks how, Director Fury reveals that Sandman is unstable due to his physical condition, but they are trying to rehabilitate him. Power Man believes the idea is working because Sandman saved his parents. Director Fury reveals they are considering making him a candidate for SHIELD's training program before White Tiger recalls what happened when they first fought him and points out that when he touches the ground, the city becomes his weapon. Spider-Man believes he can be reformed and become part of the team, but the rest of the team isn't so sure.
....
Iron Fist strikes him, but he continues attacking them. White Tiger manages to get onto the ship but discovers the engines are blocked with sand. Nova uses himself to blow the ship away, but Sandman grabs him, only to be thrown into the air by the engines. When the team is captured by Director Fury, he reveals why they left Sandman on the island. When Spider-Man pulls sand out of his sock, they discover Sandman had hidden before destroying the ship's controls, causing it to crash, but Spider-Man and White Tiger manage to prevent the ship from hitting land. When Sandman sees the SHIELD Helicarrier, he flees to the city, and the team gives chase. Spider-Man uses his webs to try to stop him, but he breaks them. White Tiger tries to scratch him, but it has no effect, and he brushes her aside. Spider-Man reminds Iron Fist that he can't reach land, and Iron Fist breaks the ice, but Sandman manages to continue his journey to New York. The team is baffled as to how to defeat him until Spider-Man realizes the sand is made of silicate and asks Nova to heat it to two thousand degrees. Nova does so, and Sandman turns to glass just as he's about to reach the city. Sandman is then taken to the Helicarrier, where he reverts to normal, but is placed inside a giant hourglass.
....
Sandman then tries to sink Power Man, but Nova saves him before Sandman can continue his attack. Spider-Man tries to tell him they understand the point, but Sandman doesn't listen and fires blocks at them before they destroy them. Spider-Man tries to stop him before anyone gets hurt, but Sandman creates spiked walls around them while accusing them of not being fun. He prevents Nova from escaping before using the spiked walls to crush them before disappearing. After the team recovers, Iron Fist asks Sandman where he has taken them before Sandman replies that... a new game, before creating walls around them again to turn it into a maze and separate them. When Spider-Man asks if they refuse to play, Sandman appears in his true form and reveals that if they don't, they will lose everything before attacking Spider-Man and Power Man. They manage to lose him before Nova attacks to distract him and prevent him from finding them. While attacking Nova, he draws hieroglyphics on the walls to show the team his origins. He then continues his search. They manage to escape the labyrinth before Sandman, while transforming into his different forms, reveals that he was only trying to make them understand and that he just wanted someone to play with, but they didn't want to play nice. He then begins to control the ground before Nova attacks him, causing Sandman to fall. He then reveals that they have been so lonely and accuses them of ruining it. White Tiger is confused about Sandy before Spider-Man reveals that Sandy is just an imaginary playmate and that Sandman invented him. Sandman tells him not to call him his ego before attacking them. They flee to the top, and Sandman pursues them to prevent them from leaving him. He tries to sink the ship, but Spider-Man, Nova, and Power Man stop him.
....
They decided to leave, but Sandman's powers prevented them. So they decided to transform into their hero identities and go after Sandman's playmate. While searching, Sandman began appearing everywhere at once, confusing the team. He then appeared as a teenager, which frightened them all. When White Tiger asked if he was Sandy's brother, he revealed his name, saying that "all of Sandy's friends are his friends." He thanked them for playing with him before revealing that they felt lonely, prompting Nova to jokingly ask about moving somewhere with other people. Sandman was confused by the helmet (because he didn't know what was happening on the mainland) before revealing that they were a bit disconnected on the island. Spider-Man then decided the team should leave, but Sandman stopped them, claiming that Sandy always loved to play and implying that he was in the "ancient ruins." Nova was about to point out that they flew there and saw nothing when they spotted the ancient ruins behind them, made of sand. They panic and decide to leave, but Sandman, in his Sandy form, appears before them. He accuses them of not being his friends and of not being able to play along, before Spider-Man tries to explain that they're suspicious, but Sandman refuses to believe him. He then vanishes before their eyes, leaving them all stunned as to how he can do that. When Iron Fist points out what's happening, Sandman takes his ship and places it over the ancient ruins before daring them to retrieve it. He then attacks them before they realize this was classified in SHIELD's files and that they're in the Bermuda Triangle. Sandman attacks them again before using both his own voice and Sandy's to tell them they should have played fair, which confuses the team.

History
Early life
Flint Marko was a criminal who one day escaped from prison, but unfortunately was caught in an atomic explosion. The explosion mutated him, turning him into sand particles and granting him the ability to control them, earning him the nickname Sandman. Later, Nick Fury and Phil Coulson captured him and abandoned him on a remote island in the Bermuda Triangle, as he was too dangerous to keep in a regular prison. Feeling lonely on the island, he created a playmate from the island's sand, whom he named "Sandy," to combat his solitude.
Season 1
Snow day
When Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Ava Ayala (White Tiger), Danny Rand (Iron Fist), Luke Cage (Power Man), and Sam Alexander (Nova) arrived in the Bermuda Triangle for a day off from SHIELD (since Nova had found him in the SHIELD files in the "Classified" section), Sandman discovered them having fun on the beach. While playing volleyball, the ball ended up in the jungle, and Peter went to retrieve it before being startled by Sandman. Sandman then took his Sandy form and brought them the ball, asking if he could play too, which confused Peter. Ava asked what he was doing on the island, but Sandman revealed that they lived there. When Ava asked where his family was, he revealed that they were everywhere. This made the teenagers suspicious of him before he fled into the jungle.

He decided to play with them, but the students escaped with the plan of his dangerous actions. Without Spider-Man and the others, he hid inside the Sandman Spider-Man unitard. He was observed by them and landed the plane in the river, which was then encased in ice. Sandman tried to climb to the surface to destroy Manhattan, but was stopped by Nova, who heated the silica in the sand to create glass. S.H.I.E.L.D. put him in a special hourglass prison that left him undergoing a reformative process with vibrations.
