Monsters
๐พ Monsters in Deltarune
Monsters are one of the two major peoples that make up the population of the Light World, alongside humans. They are a diverse group of living beings with wildly different appearances, personalities, abilities, and cultures.
Humans and monsters appear to coexist as ordinary members of the same society. They attend the same schools, live in the same neighborhoods, work in the same institutions, and participate in the same community.
This makes monsters in Deltarune feel less like a separate fantasy race and more like a normal part of everyday civilization.
๐งฌ What is a monster?
"Monster" is an extremely broad category.
There isn't one standard monster appearance.
A monster might look like:
a goat
a reptile
a bird
a fish
a rabbit
a cat
a dog
an insect
a dinosaur-like creature
a humanoid animal
or something much more unusual
Despite this enormous physical diversity, monsters share a recognizable place within society.
Many appear to possess human-like intelligence, emotions, language, and social behavior.
They can form friendships and families, attend school, pursue careers, own homes, and participate in community institutions.
In other words, being a monster doesn't prevent someone from having an ordinary life.
๐ง Humans and monsters
Humans and monsters coexist in the same world.
There is no equivalent of the massive barrier separating humans and monsters in Undertale.
Instead, humans and monsters appear to have integrated into one society.
Kris is human.
Susie is a monster.
Noelle is a monster.
Berdly is a monster.
Toriel is a monster.
They can all attend the same school and interact with one another as members of the same community.
The relationship isn't necessarily perfect, however. Characters can still have prejudices, social problems, disagreements, and insecurities.
The important point is that humans and monsters aren't inherently separated by civilization.
๐ซ Monsters in everyday life
One of the most interesting aspects of monsters is how completely ordinary their lives can be.
A monster can be a:
student
teacher
police officer
doctor
parent
shopkeeper
business owner
religious community member
gardener
or basically any other profession
For example, Undyne is a police officer, while Toriel is a teacher.
This makes the monster population feel like a functioning modern society rather than a collection of fantasy creatures waiting for an adventurer.
They have jobs to go to.
They have homes to return to.
They have families.
They have responsibilities.
They complain about everyday problems.
They make jokes.
They gossip.
They worry about one another.
๐ช Monster families
Family relationships are particularly important to the monster population.
Monster families can consist of individuals who look very similar, but they don't necessarily have to.
The Dreemurr family, for example, is a goat-like monster family with Toriel, Asgore, and their children.
Other families have entirely different appearances.
The important thing is that monsters clearly have familial relationships comparable to those of humans.
Parents raise children.
Children attend school.
Families can become close or distant.
People can carry emotional experiences from their family relationships into adulthood.
This contributes heavily to the focus on personal relationships.
โค๏ธ Monsters and emotion
Monsters are highly emotional beings.
They experience things such as:
happiness
fear
embarrassment
anger
affection
grief
loneliness
excitement
jealousy
pride
Their emotional lives are one of the reasons they feel like people rather than simply "creatures."
A monster's physical appearance doesn't necessarily tell you much about their personality.
Someone who looks intimidating can be kind.
Someone who looks harmless can be extremely confident or aggressive.
Someone who seems cheerful can still have serious personal problems.
The game consistently separates appearance from personality.
๐ง Individuality
There is no single "monster personality."
Monsters are individuals.
Two monsters of completely different species can have similar personalities, while two monsters that look almost identical can behave differently.
Being a certain kind of monster doesn't automatically determine someone's morality, intelligence, temperament, or social role.
The monster population is heterogeneous.
โก Magic
Monsters in the universe are associated with magical abilities, although magic isn't necessarily something that appears openly in ordinary Light World life.
This creates an interesting contrast.
A monster might be capable of supernatural things while still worrying about school or going to work.
Magic therefore doesn't necessarily make the Light World a traditional fantasy setting.
Instead, supernatural traits exist underneath an otherwise recognizable modern society.
The exact nature of monster magic and how it functions remains somewhat mysterious.
๐ง Monsters and the body
Monster bodies can be radically different from human bodies.
Some monsters appear to have:
fur
scales
feathers
horns
tails
claws
unusual body shapes
non-human facial structures
Yet they can still interact with ordinary human technology and infrastructure.
They drive cars, use phones, attend school, and live in houses designed for a mixed population.
This suggests that the society of the Light World has adapted to enormous biological diversity.
๐๏ธ Monster society
The existence of monsters has clearly influenced the culture of the Light World.
Architecture, clothing, transportation, schools, workplaces, and public institutions all accommodate both humans and monsters.
However, Deltarune doesn't show us an entirely separate "monster civilization."
Instead, monster culture seems to exist within the broader society.
There may be monster-specific traditions and communities, but they aren't completely isolated from humans.
This makes the world feel much more integrated.
๐ The Dreemurr family
The Dreemurrs are probably the most prominent monster family in the story.
Toriel and Asgore are both goat-like monsters.
They were once married and have a child, Asriel.
Kris, a human, is part of their family through adoption.
This is an especially interesting example of human-monster integration.
Kris isn't merely a human who happens to know monsters.
They are part of a monster family.
They have grown up in a monster household.
That means the distinction between "human" and "monster" isn't necessarily the same thing as the distinction between "family."
๐ Toriel
Toriel represents the domestic side of monster life.
She is a mother and teacher rather than a warrior or fantasy queen.
Her existence demonstrates how far the monster population has moved away from traditional fantasy-race stereotypes.
She can be powerful and supernatural while simultaneously being concerned with completely ordinary parental matters.
๐ Asgore
Asgore provides another example of a monster living an ordinary life.
Instead of being a king, he runs a flower shop and works with plants.
His personality retains elements of the kind-hearted, imposing character associated with his appearance, but his social role is completely different.
His life illustrates familiar fantasy archetypes and places them inside a mundane modern world.
๐ฒ Susie
Susie is one of the clearest examples of how monster identity intersects with adolescence.
She is a monster, but her most important characteristics aren't simply biological.
She's a teenager.
She has classmates.
She has a reputation.
She has friendships.
She has conflicts.
She is trying to figure out who she wants to be.
Her story demonstrates that the community is less interested in monsters as an exotic species and more interested in them as people.
๐ฆ Noelle
Noelle is another example.
She's a monster who attends school alongside Kris and Susie.
Her life is influenced by her family, friendships, academic environment, and personal insecurities.
Her species is part of her identity, but it isn't the entirety of who she is.
This is generally true throughout the game.
๐ฆ Berdly
Berdly demonstrates another side of monster society: competition and social status.
He's highly concerned with academic achievement and how other people perceive him.
Again, these aren't particularly "monster" concerns.
They're teenage concerns.
That's intentional.
Deltarune uses monsters to explore ordinary human experiences without requiring every character to literally be human.
๐๏ธ Monster institutions
The Light World contains institutions that serve the entire community.
Schools educate monster and human students.
Hospitals treat patients.
Police officers protect the town.
Businesses serve customers.
Religious institutions provide places for community and belief.
This tells us something important:
Monster society isn't primitive.
Monsters aren't portrayed as creatures living outside civilization.
They are part of a developed modern society.
๐ Monsters beyond Hometown
Hometown probably isn't representative of every monster in the entire world.
The story gives us only a relatively small glimpse into the wider civilization.
There are hints that the Light World is much larger than the area the player explores.
That leaves many questions unanswered.
There could be:
other monster communities
other human populations
different cultures
different monster species
cities with much larger populations
political structures we haven't seen
The game intentionally keeps the wider world mysterious.
๐ Monsters and Darkners
Monsters and Darkners should not be confused.
They are fundamentally different categories of beings.
Monsters primarily belong to the Light World.
Darkners inhabit the Dark Worlds.
A monster doesn't automatically become a Darkner by entering a Dark World.
Likewise, a Darkner isn't simply a monster from another part of the world.
Their origins and relationship to reality appear to be different.
This distinction is one of the reasons the world is so interesting.
๐งฉ Why monsters matter
Monsters help establish what the Light World actually is.
If every character were human, the setting would feel like an ordinary modern town with fantasy elements added later.
Instead, the existence of monsters makes the ordinary world itself fantastical.
A goat-like teacher giving homework isn't treated as remarkable.
A fish-like police officer driving around town isn't treated as remarkable.
A deer-like student attending school isn't treated as remarkable.
To the inhabitants, this is simply normal life.
And that is perhaps the defining characteristic of monsters in Deltarune:
They are extraordinary creatures living ordinary lives.
The game takes beings that would traditionally be fantasy enemies and gives them families, jobs, schools, personalities, ambitions, flaws, and relationships.
They aren't simply obstacles for the protagonist.
They are the people who make up the world.
And because of that, the boundary between "human" and "monster" becomes much less important than the things both groups share: friendship, family, fear, loneliness, ambition, love, and the desire to understand where they belong.
The light world
โ๏ธ The Light World
The Light World is the normal realityโa world of schools, houses, shops, roads, cars, phones, hospitals, libraries, police stations, and ordinary communities.
At first glance, it resembles a fairly normal small town.
But there is something unusual about it:
Humans and monsters live together.
Humans and monsters aren't separated by an underground barrier. They appear to have built a shared society, with monsters participating in everyday institutions alongside humans.
The world is therefore not a fantasy kingdom where magic is openly everywhere. Instead, it is a modern society populated by both humans and monsters.
๐๏ธ Hometown
The primary setting of the Light World is Hometown, the community where most live.
Hometown feels deliberately ordinary.
It contains things you'd expect in a small American-style town:
houses
a school
a church
a hospital
a police station
stores
restaurants
a library
roads
public buildings
residential neighborhoods
a cemetery
a town square
There is no enormous capital city surrounding it.
There are no visible armies marching through the streets.
There isn't a constant magical crisis.
People simply go about their lives.
That normality is extremely important to the atmosphere.
The strange things happening to Kris are happening inside an otherwise mundane world.
๐ซ The school
The school is one of the most important places in the Light World.
It is where Kris and Susie attend class, and it's also where many of the game's characters interact with one another.
The school gives the Light World a strong sense of everyday life.
Students:
attend classes
receive homework
talk with friends
get assigned projects
participate in school activities
worry about grades
interact with teachers
This is very different from the Dark World, where the same general area can become a fantastical adventure setting.
The contrast between the two realities is intentional.
In the Light World, a classroom is simply a classroom.
In the Dark World, ordinary surroundings can become something extraordinary.
๐ฆ Kris
Kris is the central human character of the Light World.
They live with their adoptive mother, Toriel, in a house in Hometown.
Kris is an especially strange because they're much quieter than almost everyone around them.
The Light World allows us to see that Kris has a life that exists independently.
They have:
a home
a family
classmates
childhood memories
relationships
habits
a reputation in town
Other characters already know Kris.
They have opinions about them.
Some characters are fond of them.
Others find them strange.
And this is crucial because it means Kris isn't simply a blank protagonist.
Kris is already a person before the soul arrives.
๐ฉ Toriel
Toriel is Kris's mother and one of the central figures in their Light World life.
She is a teacher and lives with Kris.
Their house gives us one of the clearest views of ordinary domestic life.
Toriel cooks.
She worries about Kris.
She communicates with people by phone.
She goes to work.
She expects Kris to behave responsibly.
She has relationships with other adults in town.
This makes her feel less like a fantasy character and more like an actual parent living in a normal community.
And that normality becomes important because Toriel doesn't initially know everything that's happening to Kris.
๐ Everyday life
One of the Light World's defining features is that life continues normally even when strange things are happening elsewhere.
People have mundane concerns.
They talk about:
school
work
relationships
family
food
money
errands
gossip
local events
This creates a fascinating contrast with the increasingly bizarre events surrounding Kris.
From the perspective of the player, the world may feel like it's becoming increasingly mysterious.
From the perspective of many townspeople, it's still just another day.
The dark world and dark fountains
๐ What exactly is a Dark World?
A Dark World is a mysterious world formed around a Dark Fountain. When a fountain is created in a location in the Light World, that area can become a corresponding Dark World.
The important distinction is:
Light World = the ordinary reality where Kris, Susie, Noelle, Berdly, etc. live.
Dark World = a fantastical reality inhabited by Darkners and influenced by the location in which the fountain exists.
For example, the classroom in the Light World becomes the Card Kingdom in Chapter 1. Ordinary classroom objects and playing cards are transformed into characters and locations within the Dark World.
This means Dark Worlds have a strange dual nature: they're fantastical places, but they're also deeply connected to mundane objects and locations in the Light World.
๐ณ๏ธ Dark Fountains
The Dark Fountain is essentially the heart of a Dark World.
When a fountain is opened, darkness pours into the surrounding area and creates a Dark World. The exact mechanics and origin of fountains are still deliberately mysterious.
According to the game's mythology, fountains bring forth darkness and allow Darkners to exist in their transformed forms.
A fountain doesn't necessarily turn the entire planet into a Dark World. Instead, it appears to establish a particular territory associated with the physical location where it was created.
This produces one of thecoolest recurring ideas:
The same physical place can have two completely different identities depending on whether you're experiencing it as a Light World or Dark World location.
A school supply closet can simultaneously be:
Light World:
A dusty storage room.
Dark World:
A huge fantasy kingdom populated by magical beings.
The soul pesters kris and controls her actions often. Kris can rip The soul out of her chest where it takes a human form, COMPLETELY human. Kris feels phantom pain when The soul is hurt. The soul likes kris and kris hates him. Kris and The soul are both 13.
